Sarah Hyland Has a New Job in Fashion (but It's Not What You Think)

It’s a big deal for a young celebrity to be named the face of a major clothing label, let alone be dubbed creative director. But 25-year-old Sarah Hyland is taking on both roles as the new spokeswoman and creative director for the legendary brand Candie’s. The Modern Family actress follows in a long line of celebrities who have represented the label, from Destiny’s Child to Britney Spears to Fergie, but she’s the first to actually nab the title creative director.

It marks a huge moment in the fashion industry for Candie’s, which started in 1981 and was widely known for its feminine and flirty apparel, shoes, and accessories. These days, the label is available exclusively at Kohl’s, and with Hyland on board, it’s taking a more mature and elevated approach, offering on-trend booties, billowy blouses, and cropped pants.

WHO WHAT WEAR: How does it feel to be the first ever creative director and face of Candie’s?

SARAH HYLAND: I’m excited to be the first-ever Candie’s creative director and to be able to show the Candie’s girl and the professional, working woman how she can go into that more sophisticated phase in her life while still keeping her style fresh and fun.

WWW: What do your duties as creative director for Candie’s entail?

SH: For the fall collection, I styled the looks on set and gave input on the inspirations and mood. The next step for me is developing the spring clothing line. I’ve reviewed mood boards and met with the Candie’s product team to discuss influences, inspirations, fabrics, and materials. I was able to see my feedback come to life in our samples at the Candie’s showroom recently. I felt like I had an office job for the first time—it was fun!

WWW: How would you describe the new look of Candie’s?

SH: Candie’s is for everyone, from the young girl with a fun sense of style to the college girl looking for her first job to the working woman. The great thing about this new fall collection is that it stays true to Candie’s. We’ve made small changes, like modernizing the brand’s signature hot pink to a blush pink to keep it girly and flirty, but sophisticated and mature at the same time.

WWW: How did you incorporate your own style into the new collection?

SH: I can bring my eclectic, across-the-board fashion to the Candie’s collection, and we collaborated together to create a unique yet sophisticated style for all young women. I shared my styling inspirations with the team, and they made these inspirations a reality through the products we’re creating.

WWW: What is important to you about the history of Candie’s?

SH: I’m honored to be a Candie’s girl because the brand has a history of partnerships with amazing, strong women. I remember the first Candie’s campaign I ever saw with Britney Spears, so this opportunity is incredible to me. Many of my friends have been Candie’s girls, so it’s fun for me to be able to have shared experiences with them through the brand.

WWW: What are your styling tips with the Candie’s line?

SH: One of my favorite fall Candie’s pieces is the green army jacket with embellishments. The embellishments on the pocket bring something flirty and fun to a piece like an army jacket, and it can be paired with a blouse for a work-appropriate look. I’m also a big fan of the lace up-blouse trend. You can wear the lace-up blouse with a skirt or pants to dress it up or down.

WWW: What can we expect to see in the new collection?

SH: We incorporated influences for fall that range from our iconic chevron print in a variety of tops, embellishments on army jackets and denim, outfit-completer pieces like a lace bomber, and fun fabrications like a floral jacquard.
