Life Aquatic

Your Who What Wear editors love an offbeat, Bill Murray cult classic as much as the next cinema aficionado, which is why the whole office is particularly enthused to share this month's quirky and utterly amazing Currently Channeling story: The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou! It almost sounds too good to be true, right? Well, after much careful examination, we were delighted to find that the film's whimsical underwater theme was indeed epitomized on a number of runways this season, from Balenciaga's netted dresses to Karen Walker's bright orange prints. With those collections in mind, we decided to set off on an adventurous journey of our own to find some of the coolest, ocean-inspired items that are not only spot-on picks for fall, but also perfectly capture the spirit of Steve Zissou's eccentric world. At this risk of sounding too smarmy, we think we can safely say: mission accomplished!

Written and directed by Wes Anderson, the The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou is a comedy that follows oceanographer Steve Zissou (Bill Murray) on his quest to find the Jaguar shark that ate his partner. Zissou's crew comes along on this "scientific" project, including his wife Eleanor (Anjelica Huston), second-in-command Klaus Daimler (Willem Dafoe), potential son Ned Plimpton (Owen Wilson), and reporter Jane Winslett-Richardson (Cate Blanchett) who is there to document the voyage. As with any Wes Anderson flick, the plot introduces you to a bevy of interesting and flawed characters, gives you dry humor galore, and takes place in an exaggerated, almost dream-like setting-for example, the oceans are filled with magical creatures, like albino scout dolphins and research turtles that wear headgear-all of which result in one hilarious, must-see movie!

Admittedly, there isn't a whole lot to say for the sartorial aspect of this film-blue wetsuits and red beanies pretty much sum it all up-but we did find loads of inspiration for today's story from the imaginative, whimsical world Anderson created. Look closely, and you'll be able to see a hint of crew's individualistic sensibilities and the film's brightly colored sea creatures in all of the featured items. Now, without further adieu, we give you Currently Channeling: The Life Aquatic!

CoSTUME NATIONAL Crepe Wool Coat ($3330, 212.431.1530) in Dusty Blue
We couldn't imagine a more perfect piece of outerwear for today's story than this amazing coat by CoSTUME NATIONAL. First, we'd like to point out the sky blue color, which happens to be quite similar, if not an exact match, to the crew's uniform shirts. Even better: keeping warm and stylish this winter will be a snap, thanks to its cozy streamlined crepe wool fabric. All in all, we believe this coat is one hundred percent worth the investment, however, if you can't quite commit to the hefty price tag, we think both Steve by Searie's Boyfriend Coat ($440) and ASOS' Premium Car Coat in Brushed Wool ($219) are superb alternatives worth checking out!

Topshop Premium Multi Eye Cluster Ring ($35) in Gold
The second we spotted this wonderfully bizarre ring from Topshop, we couldn't help but think of the film's fanciful, imaginary sea creatures-think: crayon ponyfish, rhinestone tuna, and sugar crabs. The cluster of bright eyeballs makes this little bauble a fun statement piece that will add just the right amount of creative quirkiness to any look.

AIKO Bianca Dress ($145) in Charcoal Melange
If you're searching for a dress that is both comfortable and stylish, there's no need to look any further. The AIKO Bianca Dress is a cozy option for fall and winter, thanks to its thermal jersey material. Even better: it's a versatile piece that can be worn to the office (with a sleek blazer and heels) or an after-hours soiree (dressed up with statement jewelry). However you choose to style it, we guarantee it will be get a lot of wear this season!

Mismo Backpack ($540)
You can't embark on a voyage, or any trip for that matter, without a trusty carryall in tow! But of course, if it's a big adventure you have in mind-like, say tracking down a Jaguar shark-a mini bag just won't do. Instead, we recommend picking up a functional-yet-chic backpack like this one by Mismo. Whether you're headed to class or planning a weekend jaunt, its superior design is perfect for storing all your essentials and more. We especially approve of its mix of olive green canvas and dark brown leather, which gives the bag a retro, utilitarian spirit. We also approve of Kimchi Blue's Canvas Backpack ($68), which has a similarly stylish look but at a fraction of the cost.

American Apparel Unisex Cuffed Acrylic Lined Beanie ($20) in Red
One of the most standout pieces of the "Team Zissou" uniform is the red beanie, which is why we simply had to include this one from American Apparel. Not only is it almost identical to the ones worn in the film, but it's also a great accessory to have on hand for those chilly winter days. If the bright red hue is a bit much for you, we suggest opting for a darker shade like black or gray a la the Karen Walker F/W 11 runway instead. Either way, the resulting look will be quite cozy and stylish!

Kelsi Dagger Addina Heels ($129, available October 1st) in Cream Mushroom
When it came down to selecting the right shoe for today's Currently Channeling story, we knew just the designer to turn to: Kelsi Dagger! Whether you're searching for a classic nude pump or something with a little more flash and personality, trust us, she's got it all. Right now, we've got our eye on the new Addina Heels, which offer a neutral take on the ongoing colorblocking trend. We love the sleek design and are even more enamored with the mix of materials-the shoe features a suede front with leather trim and a rubber cap toe-which give the shoes a cool, futuristic look. We think they would look smart worn with a button-up shirt and leather shorts.

ASOS Sequin Mini Skirt ($137, available end of September) in Neon Green
At the Prada F/W 11 show, we were mesmerized by the dresses and coats covered in brightly colored pailettes, which created the illusion of glossy scales. Happily, you don't have to invest quite so much to get this ocean-inspired look! This fluorescent skirt from ASOS fits the bill to a T, and is perfect in keeping with the overall theme of today's story. The mix of shimmering neon yellow and green sequins remind us of the vibrant sea creatures we see throughout the film. We think this statement-making piece is fitting for a GNO or fashion party, don't you agree?

Marc by Marc Jacobs Jungle Tee ($335) in Animal Print
If you couldn't already tell, our next pick is in honor of the infamous Jaguar shark. The burnt orange color is just as bold and eye-catching as the shark itself, while the animal print is a nod to the elusive creature's intriguing spots. Take this silky tee from day to night by pairing it with a leather skirt and simple black pumps.

NARS Nail Polish ($17) in Galion
Come fall, we always find ourselves reaching for gray nail polish, as the color pretty much goes with everything and always looks chic. And while last year it was a transitional heather gray hue that piqued our interest, this time around we're smitten with darker shades, hence our inclusion of NARS' new-for-fall lacquer Gallion. We love the stormy color, which is subtler than black, plus, it also reminds us of the Mediterranean ocean's errie abyss!

Illesteva Leonard Sunglasses ($165) in Blond
While many of you might not immediately think of sunglasses as a fall wardrobe necessity, we'd beg to differ. With that in mind, we believe this quirky pair by Illesteva is a must for anyone hoping to channel the slightly quirky nature of Zissou and his team this season. With modern, see-through yellow frames and an of-the-moment round shape, these sunglasses are undeniably cool. The best part: they'll add just the right amount of playfulness to your layered winter looks.-Jessica Baker
