French Girls All Agree: This Timeless Piece Is a Non-Negotiable

When we're looking for fashionable inspiration, there are a few places that we always tend to turn to. Fashion month is always key to help us get a comprehensive look at the season ahead, and we often scour Instagram to uncover burgeoning trends and independent brands, but when it comes to finding looks that will stand the test of time, the one place we can always rely on is the streets of Paris.

The truth is, French girls have mastered understated style in an effortlessly "put together" way that I'm still trying to replicate. After all, where else can you find the chicest footwear brands? The new ways to wear jeans? Or even the best way to style a blazer? If you've got a sartorial dilemma, there's a French styling trick to answer it. So naturally as the new season has come into full effect and we all stand in front of our wardrobes wondering what to wear next, I took to the feeds of some of Paris' most stylish women for the answer, and there was a clear winner.

From what I can see via social media, French girls are not wearing puffer coats, or even leather jackets. Apparently. when the temperatures drop they all reach for one thing–a tweed jacket. Cropped or longline, boxy or fitted blazer, the tweed jacket has been a staple in French wardrobes since it's introduction by Coco Chanel, and some 100 years later, it's still considered a must-have.

Although the original look might have included a demure co-ordinating midi skirt and a string of pearls, today's influencers are bringing the look up-to-date with straight-legged jeans and great accessories, trés chic, non? And it might be the easiest way to update the blazer + tee + loafer uniform we lived in all summer.

So, to help you plan your next autumnal outfit, keep scrolling for the best tweed blazers on the market now, and to see how French girls are wearing them.

Style Notes: If you needed any convincing that the tweed jacket is part of the archetypal French uniform, Julie and Marielle show how its worn day-to-day. Just add blue jeans, a white top, and a mini baguette. That is, the leather kind.

Style Notes: If you want to do Paris like a Parisian, make sure to pair your tweed with ballet pumps. Extra points if they're Chanel.

Style Notes: I'm a sucker for a good suit, and Emmanuelle manages to make a classic tweed suit feel entirely modern just by opting for a mini length skirt.

Style Notes: Head-to-toe black never goes out of style. A case in point: Sabina Socol's unmistakably French take on tailored maternity dressing.
