I'm Just a Girl Who Needs a Dry Shampoo That *Actually* Works: These 8 Are It
No time to shower? No problem.

I have an oily scalp, so I sometimes feel like I'm waging an eternal war against greasy roots. Let's say I wash and style my hair on Sunday. There's a 90% chance my hair will need to be washed and styled again by Tuesday (if not sooner). I have some tricks for disguising grease—namely, hats, headbands, and frequent brushing with a boar-bristle brush to distribute oil down to my dry ends, but of course, I'm no stranger to dry shampoo.
Actually, that's an understatement. Dry shampoo is so pivotal to my hair routine that I experience a genuine sense of unease whenever I'm low on it. Not only does it refresh and volumize my flat hair, but it also extends the life of my hairstyles so that I can go longer between shampooings. That's important to me. After all, washing and styling my hair takes up a lot of time. That's not to mention the whole hair-health and heat-damage components. If I can cut down on exposure to hair dryers, curling irons, and straighteners (and save on split-end treatments), I will.
That's not to say that choosing a dry shampoo is simple. Actually, it's deceptively difficult. Some weigh down the roots. Some feel thick and chalky. Some sop up only a little bit of oil, leaving an oil-slick shine behind. Others still irritate my scalp and cause my hair to feel even drier than normal. Ahead, see the eight best dry shampoos that are hairstylist-recommended, editor-tested, and approved.

The Best Dry Shampoos
Best Overall: Ouai Super Dry Invisible Dry Shampoo
Size: 4.5 oz | Scent: Herbal | Key Ingredients: Rice starch and micro-starch
This stuff is heavy-duty—like a dry cleaner for your scalp and hair. I've used it on five-day hair when my strands were so greasy I had no business skipping out on regular shampoo, yet it revived my roots and made my hair look perfectly clean. Not only does it absorb excess oil on contact, but it smells incredible. Ouai's new scent, Cape Town, is a fresh, herbal blend of notes like ginger, spearmint, green fig, and basil. It's clean, chic, and sophisticated, like a luxury spa. (However, if that's not your vibe, it also comes in the brand's iconic fruity-floral scent, Melrose Place.) I genuinely love this dry shampoo, and I know other beauty editors agree with me.
Customer review: "Believe me when I say I tried most of the dry shampoos out there. This one smells the best among them and works as well as they intended. Must have item!"

Best Affordable: Batiste Original Dry Shampoo
Size: 7.62 oz | Scent: Fresh | Key Ingredients: Rice starch and keratin
If you think you can't find a truly effective dry shampoo at the drugstore, think again. Batiste's Original Dry Shampoo is one of my all-time-favorite formulas because it's packed with powder that transforms my oily roots into fresh, clean ones on contact. It will leave a white cast if you're not careful, but it's nothing a brush or a hair dryer can't fix. Plus, it delivers big volume and lift.
Customer review: "My roots look lifted, my scalp feels refreshed, and it gives my hair a subtle clean scent that lasts. It's a total game-changer for busy days when I don't have time to wash my hair but still want it to look and feel amazing. Highly recommend for anyone who's active or just wants their style to last longer between washes, especially when you live in Arizona and it's been a HOT summer."
Best for Flat Hair: Nexxus Refresh Volume Dry Shampoo
Size: 7.62 oz | Scent: Fresh | Key Ingredients: Tapioca starch
Assistant beauty editor Sabrina Talbert swears by this dry shampoo for two reasons: the fresh-from-the-salon scent and the volumizing effect it imparts on flat roots. "I love this one," she says. "I'm not big on hair products that are super noticeable in smell but if I'm wearing this I don't even bother spraying on my favorite body mist. I'm obsessed with the scent and I like that it’s volumizing, which is a blessing between washes when I’m trying to revive my hair."
Customer review: "I have tried every single dry shampoo on the market...from powder to spray cans, etc. I have tried expensive and cheap. I use dry shampoo almost daily and I have to say this is hands down my favorite!! It has a fantastic clean scent that smells and feels like you actually washed your hair. Even in my dark roots I don't get a white cast from this dry shampoo either - which is another huge factor for me. The size is another, this can is BIG, five ounces lasts a really long time and is a great value. This product also gives my hair volume and shine, I have never used anything like it. "

Best for Dark Hair: Unite U:Dry Clear Dry Shampoo
Size: 5 oz | Scent: Fresh | Key Ingredients: Rice starch, hectorite, zeolite, phospholipids
Celebrity hairstylist TerraRose Puncerelli recommends this invisible dry shampoo for dark hair colors, as it's less likely to leave a white or gray cast. Plus, it's "effective and price-friendly." The secret is in the ingredients, hectorite and zeolite, both of which are invisible powders that absorb oil and impurities.
Customer review: "I use it whenever I don't wash my hair for the day. It's a great alternative and doesn't make my hair look oily or smell."
Best Non-Aerosol: K18 AirWash Dry Shampoo
Size: 4 oz | Scent: Fresh-floral | Key Ingredients: Translucent microbeads, odor bind technology, Mediterranean microalgae
This buzzy product went viral on Instagram and TikTok, and I understand why. The non-aerosol dry shampoo lasts up to three days using a patented "odor bind" technology that sops up sweat and oil without leaving buildup, a white cast, or heavy fragrances behind. Just be warned: This isn't a traditional powder formula (hence the non-aerosol distinction). It's more of a liquid mist, which some people say takes some getting used to. Personally, I love it. It makes my roots look fresh and full without chalky residue.
Customer review: "This is one of my favorite hair products ever! It literally makes my hair feel like I JUST washed it and it’s actually my day 3 hair. Other dry shampoos just don’t compare to the quality of this one. I will definitely be repurchasing!"
Klorane Dry Shampoo With Oat Milk
Size: 3.2 oz | Scent: Fresh | Key Ingredients: Rice starch and oat milk
This iconic French pharmacy product is also one of the best dry shampoo formulas on the market. It's lightweight, effective, and suitable for all hair types, leaving the hair looking fresh and bouncy in that effortless Parisian-girl way.
Customer review: "I have used many different brands of dry shampoo because I was never completely satisfied with any of them until I found this! Absolutely love it! It does exactly what it’s supposed to: soaks up oil, adds body, and does not leave a white residue on dark hair. And I love the scent. Cannot say enough good things about this product."
Dae Fairy Duster Dry Shampoo
Size: 1 oz | Scent: Citrus | Key Ingredients: Mojave yucca, prickly pear seed oil, cactus flower extract
Who What Wear's beauty director, Erin Jahns, loves this non-aerosol and talc-free dry shampoo for oil absorption and volume. Push down on the pump, and it deposits a "poof" of dry shampoo powder onto the hair. The super-concentrated formula equals four traditional aerosol cans (so don't be suspicious of its small size). It softly wraps the hair in Dae's signature warm citrus scent, so it's as sensorial as it is effective.
Customer review: "This is my favorite dry shampoo ever. It smells great, gives so much volume, helps with oiliness, is easy to blend in, and lasts FOREVER. I got the mini as a sample, and it’s lasted many months, and I use it often. I use it for oil control, but also to give my bangs some volume. This is seriously the best!"
Oribe Gold Lust Dry Shampoo
Size: 6 oz | Scent: Luxurious | Key Ingredients: Translucent starch, Oribe Signature Complex
Leave it to Oribe to create a luxe dry shampoo. Sure, it refreshes the hair and extends the life of a style, but it also offers UV and environmental protection. Yep. It defends the hair from oxidative stress, photoaging, and the deterioration of natural keratin. So if you look at it that way, it's really a hair treatment–dry shampoo hybrid. Plus, it has Oribe's signature salon-worthy scent.
Customer review: "Love love love this product. It made my hair soft and clean and doesn’t leave any heavy residue. The product smells great, is very expensive, and luxurious. Only con is the pricey price, but I totally recommend this product if you want to treat yourself."
How to Use Dry Shampoo
"There are a few different ways I like to use dry shampoo, not just for absorbing oil but also for creating texture and hold without the hair feeling like it has too much product in it," Puncerelli says. "I always section the hair out and apply it to the roots (never to the hair shaft, as this will make your hair very dry)."
The proper technique comes down to your specific hair texture. "If you have finer hair, you’re going to want to apply the dry shampoo a little at a time until you achieve your desired goal. Sometimes I recommend using a fine-tooth comb to shimmy it in the roots. For medium to thicker hair, you can be a little bit more generous with the application, but again, you want to make sure you’re using a dry shampoo that becomes translucent so your hair doesn’t have a white cast over it."
