It's a running joke among my friends: I'm a sucker for period pieces. When Sofia Coppola's film Marie Antoinette debuted in 2006, I fell hard—for the soundtrack, the cinematography, but most unabashedly for the fashion. So when I heard the news that the ultra-talented director's back with a new period piece this summer, I began to scan Google for any sign of images. Now, thanks to The Beguiled (which hits theaters June 23), I'm finding myself craving a dreamy new look for summer.
The film is set during the Civil War at a boarding school in the South, so the costumes are plenty frilly and feminine, with a certain Victorian flair. And with an all-star cast of trendsetters that include Kirsten Dunst and Elle Fanning, it's only a matter of time before onscreen style translates to street style, too. Clearly, for 2017, it's time to embrace the romantic and put a modern twist on the lavish looks we're craving courtesy of Coppola.
