There's something to be said for the joy of doing a DIY manicure in the comfort of your own home. The older I've gotten, the more time-poor I've become, and whilst I'd never say no to a salon appointment, I'm increasingly looking for simple tools that can make my nails look better with minimal effort. Whilst nail files and cuticle oils are central to a good mani, when it comes to doing them yourself, there's another humble tool that's worth having in your kit: the nail buffer.

What Is a Nail Buffer?

"A nail buffer is a nail-care tool with a slightly abrasive surface that you use to gently smooth and refine the surface of the natural nail," reveals Cappella. Unlike a nail file, which is mainly used to shape the free edge, a buffer is designed to work over the surface of the natural nail itself.

"They’re great for giving your natural nails a smoother, more even finish, particularly before applying polish yourself, or with your nail professional to apply gel or BIAB," she adds.

Can You Buff Out Ridges With a Nail Buffer?

"You can gently smooth the appearance of very minor ridges with a buffer, but wouldn’t recommend trying to completely buff away pronounced ridges," advises Capella. "Those ridges are part of the natural structure of your nail, and repeatedly buffing them down can actually weaken the nail," she adds.

If you have naturally ridged nails, your trained nail professional will embrace the texture and opt for a thicker base coat before applying gel or BIAB to create a smoother-looking finish instead.

Are Nail Buffers Good for Your Nails?

In short, the answer is yes, when used occasionally and gently. "A nail buffer can be a really useful part of your nail-care routine. The important thing is not to overdo it. Your natural nail has several layers, so aggressive or very frequent buffing can thin the nail over time," explains Capella.

How To Use a Nail Buffer

"The key with a buffer is to still be really gentle. Start with a clean, dry natural nail and use light pressure, moving the buffer across the nail surface rather than aggressively rubbing in one spot. You only need a few light passes to smooth things out—you’re not trying to remove layers of the natural nail. I’d also avoid buffing too frequently, as over-buffing can make the nails thinner and more vulnerable," advises Capella.
