9 Nontoxic Self-Tanners That Deliver Glowier Results Than the Actual Sun
Mousses, drops, and mists that work on every skin tone and type.
There’s something transformative about a tan. Whether you’ve earned it by lounging in the sun (after slathering on strong SPF, of course) or given yourself a faux glow with your favorite self-tanner, there’s no denying the boost in confidence a bronzed complexion can offer. Thanks to the stronger sunscreen literacy of millennials and Gen Z compared to their predecessors, many bronzed beauties today opt for self-tanner over sunning sessions, which can lead to skin damage or cancer when proper precautions are ignored. Though self-tanning mediums such as serum-like drops, waters, and creams are generally thought to be safer than baking in the sun, your self-tanner can be a quiet source of concern, too.
As a self-tan lover, I’ll never tell you to pitch all of your old tried-and-trues. However, it’s worth reassessing your stash to ensure that your ingredient lists are nontoxic—meaning no parabens, sulfates, synthetic fragrances, phthalates, and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, according to celebrity spray tan artist and brand founder, Isabel Alysa. “A nontoxic self-tanner is one that achieves a sun-kissed glow without relying on harsh or potentially harmful synthetic chemicals,” she explains. “The active tanning agent in most self-tanners is DHA (dihydroxyacetone), which is generally considered safe,” she adds, “but a truly nontoxic formula pairs it with skin-nourishing, clean supporting ingredients rather than fillers and irritants.”
Though glowy, bronzed skin may look amazing, it’s important to remember that not all self-tanners are made equal. Below, the nine formulas that earned editors’ and experts’ stamps of approval in 2026.
The Best Nontoxic Self-Tanners, At a Glance
- Best Overall: SaltyFace Tanning Foam
- Best Budget: Alba Botanica Sunless Tanner
- Best Mousse: Dolce Glow Express Self-Tanning Mousse
- Best Drops: Dolce Glow Goccia Di Sole Hydrating Self-Tanning Serum Drops
- Best Express: Tan Luxe Express Water
Best Overall: Saltyface Tanning Foam
Pros: Natural color, streak-free application, gentle formula
Cons: On the pricey side
Key ingredients: Organic sugar beets, aloe leaf extract, linden leaf extract | Skin type: All | Development: 4-6 hours
Not only is SaltyFace an editor favorite, but it’s officially derm-approved. Famous for its non-streaky, natural-looking self-tanners that are packed with skincare, SaltyFace is top-shelf to most beauty lovers—and it’s board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon, Dendy Engelman, MD’s first pick. “I appreciate this formula because it uses plant-derived DHA and incorporates soothing, barrier-supportive botanicals, which help minimize irritation while promoting an even fade,” she explains. “It’s also fragrance-free and lightweight, making it a strong option for sensitive or acne-prone skin.” You can also nab it in a medium-to-dark option.
Customer review: “I’ve tried so many self-tanners over the years, and Saltyface tanning foam is honestly one of the best I’ve used. It goes on super smooth, blends easily, and doesn’t have that awful fake tan smell. The color develops really naturally—not orange, not streaky—just a nice, sun-kissed glow… If you want a natural-looking tan that’s easy to apply and low-maintenance, this one’s definitely worth it. I’ll be repurchasing for sure.”
Best Budget: Alba Botanica Sunless Tanner
Pros: Drugstore price, natural results, hydrating moisturizer
Cons: Won’t deliver as deep a tan as some others on this list
Key ingredients: Shea butter, vitamin C, sweet almond oil | Skin type: All | Development: 3 hours
You don’t need to splurge to enjoy a nontoxic bronze. This pick from Alba retails for just $12, and yet it delivers a realistic, natural-looking tan that rivals some seriously high price tags. People with dry skin will appreciate that this self-tanner is actually a moisturizer packed with hydrating ingredients like shea butter, sweet almond oil, and orange peel oil—delivering deep nourishment while simultaneously offering a gradual bronze.
Customer review: “It truly creates a beautiful natural tan—not at all streaky or blotchy… It’s significantly less expensive than other vegan self-tanners—but it works GREAT! I’ve gotten many compliments—when I tell people it’s a self-tanner, they’re always very surprised. It’s NOT overly bronze, orange, or fake-looking. Very natural and beautiful color.”
Best Mousse: Dolce Glow Express Self-Tanning Mousse
Pros: Buildable formula, lasts longer than most self-tanners, develops quickly
Cons: Slightly expensive
Key ingredients: Glycerin, avocado oil, prickly pear seed oil | Skin type: All | Development: 2-4 hours
If you’re looking for a tanning mousse that will go the distance, look no further than this pick from Dolce Glow. “The Express Mousse is for the girl who wants a deep, even tan fast—no hours of waiting,” says Alysa. The tan artist describes this natural-looking, non-streaky formula as “packed with the same luxe skin-nourishing ingredients” as so many of Dolce Glow’s other products, but designed to work quickly and last. While some formulas can get blotchy after just one day, this foam is engineered with DMI (dimethyl isosorbide), a plant-based solvent that prolongs the staying power of your tan.
Best Mousse, Less Expensive: Sunnee Baeside Self-Tanning Sea Mousse
Pros: Hydrating formula, even application, lower-priced option with high-quality performance
Cons: Honestly, none
Key ingredients: Blue-green algae, sea kelp, moringa seed oil | Skin type: All | Development: 2-6 hours
Self-tanner is one of those categories that can get pricey quickly. Lucky for us, experts know lower-priced options that they swear work just as well. “I love the Express Mousse because it's a buildable tan that delivers a beautiful, beach-bronzed glow that develops within hours,” says Alysa. “This formula is unlike any other. The DMI helps your color absorb evenly while the glycerin locks in next-level hydration,” she adds. Its skincare-packed foamy formula is infused with marine skincare ingredients like moringa seed oil, sea kelp, and blue-green algae, which not only help smooth the skin barrier for a smoother application, but also quench dryness. As a dry skin-haver with sensitive skin, this stuff is my go-to (and I broke it all down in a review for you).
Customer review: “This tan is not talked about enough… It’s the most natural-looking tan you're going to get out of a bottle. The smell is very minimal, smells like soap, not your regular self-tan smell. The mousse is thicker, which is nice, it doesn't dissolve into the mitt like many other mousses do. Honestly, it has great coverage, barely sticks to rough patches (knees, elbows, etc), and goes on and blends so smoothly. 10/10 on this one, by far my favorite self-tan.”
Best Drops: Dolce Glow Goccia di Sole Hydrating Self-Tanning Serum Drops
Pros: Buildable color, versatile formula, hydrating
Cons: Pretty pricey
Key ingredients: Aloe vera, jojoba oil, caffeine | Skin type: All | Development: 4-6 hours
If you’ve ever wanted to try self-tanning drops but didn’t want to spend double on face and body formulas (most body drops are not suitable for the face), you’re in luck. Dolce Glow’s Goccia di Sole drops are gentle and hydrating enough for the face while still packing enough of a punch for a lush, sun-kissed glow below the neck. “The formula is spiked with aloe vera, cranberry extract (great for acne-prone skin!), and glycolic acid to keep skin smooth while it tans,” Alysa explains. “Buildable, versatile, and truly nontoxic.” Simply mix a few drops into your favorite moisturizer, serum, or sunscreen (yes, I’ve done it all) and wait for it to develop over the next few hours.
Customer review: “I love Goccia di Sole Hydrating Self-Tanning Serum Drops; I use it in all my lotions that I use on my face and body. The color tan I get is very natural-looking, there is no smell, or streaks, and it is long-lasting. I would recommend this product to anyone who is looking for [a] nice gradual tan.”
Best Express: Tan Luxe Express Water
Pros: Skincare-packed, natural-looking, transfer-free, ultra-fast development
Cons: Zero
Key ingredients: Double hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, beta glucan | Skin type: All | Development: 30 mins.
Not only is this one of the fastest, most impressive express formulas editors have tested, but dermatologists appreciate its skin-loving benefits. “Tan Luxe stands out for blending self-tanning with true skincare,” says Engelman, who spotlights its nourishing ingredients—including hyaluronic acid and vitamin C—which better the skin while developing a natural-looking flush. “The water-based format reduces pore-clogging risk and allows for a more gradual, controlled result,” she expands. “Highly recommended for acne-prone skin!” If you loathe the heaviness of some self-tanning formulas, the six-hour waiting period, or the worry of an unexpected blemish after applying, your search ends here.
Customer review: “My new favorite tanning product! I am always on the go, so I love that in just a couple hours I can achieve a golden bronze tan that looks completely natural. My legs look like I just got back from vacation! Thank you, Tan Luxe!”
Best Wash-Off: True Botanicals Bronze Well Regenerative Glow Drops
Pros: Deeply nourishing, temporary results,
Cons: Will not offer the long-lasting wear of the others on this list
Key ingredients: Carotenoid-rich oils, pro-vitamin A apricot kernel oil, calendula oil | Skin type: All | Development: None
Quite the opposite of express tanner, these bronzing drops from True Botanicals are made to wash off at the end of the day—however, they provide an instant bronze instead of the gradual effects of most tanners. “This is less of a traditional self-tanner and more of a treatment oil that adds a subtle bronzed effect while actively nourishing the skin,” says Engelman, who recommends this product to anyone who wants an instant, versatile, and natural-looking bronze. “I like it for patients who prioritize barrier repair and radiance over deeper pigment, as it supports hydration and skin quality first,” she elaborates. Simply mix a few drops into your daily skincare for a realistic glow.
Customer review: “Adds a beautiful, natural bronze tan and makes your skin look really glowy and healthy. Not sticky!”
Best Mist: Dolce Glow Acqua Dark Hydrating Self-Tanning Face Mist
Pros: Supremely lightweight, noticeably bronzy, doubles as a setting spray
Cons: Takes a while to develop
Key ingredients: Aloe vera, hyaluronic acid, caffeine | Skin type: All | Development: 6 hours
Tanning mists can be hit-or-miss. Most users want a quick wash of color that requires very little dry time, feels totally weightless, and offers noticeable color, but most fall flat when it comes to the last ask. However, the category is in for a bit of a shakeup now that Dolce Glow’s Acqua Dark is on the scene. “Acqua Dark is the deeper-shade sister to the original Acqua face mist, designed for those who want a more dramatic, buildable facial glow,” says Alysa. “Free of parabens, formaldehydes, phthalates, sulfates, and with less than 1% synthetic fragrance, it checks every clean beauty box,” she explains.
The mist is ultra-fine and delivers an even layer across the skin, performing flawlessly under makeup and being light enough for everyday use. “A no-rinse formula that works while you live your life,” she concludes. Oh, and did I mention you can use it at any point during your makeup routine—even as a setting spray? It’s a must-have.
Customer review: “I got this as a freebie and now I’m kind of obsessed. As someone fair-skinned, face self-tanners can easily turn orange or streaky, but this one gives the prettiest natural, sun-kissed glow that just looks like I’ve been outside. The mist makes it so easy—just spritz and go. No streaks, no mess, and no strong self-tanner smell. It also feels really hydrating, and the color builds gradually so it looks super believable. Perfect travel size too. Safe to say I’m not going without this now.”
Best Water: The Tan Edit Water Veil
Pros: Transfer-proof, extremely lightweight, natural-looking color
Cons: Takes the longest to develop
Key ingredients: Glycerin, vitamin C, cucumber extract | Skin type: All | Development: 8 hours
“At its core, a nontoxic self-tanner enhances the skin without compromising it,” says beauty expert and brand founder Erika Vasco, which is why she created The Tan Edit’s Water Veil. Not only does this lightweight tanning water lack harmful parabens, sulfates, and phthalates, but it’s also skin-softening and buildable thanks to its ultra-fine, sheer mist that builds color without using cosmetic pigment. If color transfer is your worst nightmare, this is your spray. “My clients love how natural it reads,” she adds. “I use it often on the face, neck, and décolleté areas where a heavy tan tends to look the least believable.”
Customer review: “Literally THE best face tanner I’ve ever tried. I use this daily after my skincare routine in the evenings before bed and wake up glowing all winter and all year long. No irritation with my skin, and I have sensitive/reactive skin, so I’m beyond grateful and will have this as a staple always!”
What to Look For in Nontoxic Self-Tanner
- Skincare benefits: “When choosing a self-tanner, I always remind patients to think skincare first, color second,” says Engelman. “Look for hydrating, barrier-supporting ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin to help the tan develop evenly and fade naturally, and choose a texture that suits your skin type—creams for drier skin, lighter formulas for oilier types,” she adds. I also recommend building color gradually for the most natural result.”
- Skin type: Vasco urges shoppers to consider their skin type and any pre-existing skin conditions. “If your skin is on the drier side, opt for more hydrating formulas like gradual lotions and milks—they’re more forgiving and give you better control over the result,” she recommends. “Oily or acne-prone skin may prefer a water-based serum or drops,” Alysa adds.
- Formula: Self-tanners come in several shapes, sizes, and formulations, all offering different perks depending on your preference. “Foams and mousses tend to dry quickly and are easier to blend; drops mixed into moisturizer give more control; waters are buildable and lightweight,” says Alysa.
- Tone: One of the most important qualities to consider is tone. Vasco points out that formulation plays a part in the development of color: “Mousses tend to be more fast-drying and develop more intensely, which can be better suited for someone looking for a deeper result,” she explains. “Gradual formulas are more sheer and buildable, while express or rapid formulas tend to develop darker.” However, your personal skin tone plays another factor. “If you lean more olive, look for violet-based formulas to enhance that undertone. If you pull redder, an olive-based formula can help balance and neutralize warmth,” she adds. “And if you’re unsure, starting with a neutral, buildable formula is always the safest place to begin.”
What should shoppers avoid when shopping for self-tanner?
Our experts agreed one key qualities to avoid: Anything with an overly strong fragrance (good or bad). “Lower-quality formulas tend to develop with a strong odor, pull unevenly, and dry the skin out leading to that patchy, cracked fade people associate with bad self-tanning,” says Vasco. They also recommend doing your research beforehand to see whether or not the formula has staying power. “If it looks good for 24 hours but not for five days, it’s not a self-tanner—it’s a skin stain,” Vasco adds. Engelman also advises to steer clear of any formulations with high alcohol content or “overly aggressive color claims,” as these can lead to uneven wear, irritation, and possibly “long-term disruption of skin health.”
Is it safe for pregnant people to use self-tanner?
This, Alysa says, is a question she gets all the time. “Self-tanners are generally considered low risk during pregnancy because the active ingredient, DHA, primarily reacts with the outermost layer of the skin and is not significantly absorbed,” says Engelman. “That said, I still advise patients to choose fragrance-free, minimal-ingredient formulas and to avoid spray or aerosol applications, which could potentially be inhaled.”
Alysa agrees, adding that “most OB-GYNs recommend caution, especially in the first trimester, and advise avoiding spray tans or any method that involves inhalation.” If you really want to self-tan in that time period, she recommends a “clean, nontoxic self-tanner applied topically”—think lotions, foams, drops, or mists—over a spray. However, you should speak with your OB-GYN before deciding whether or not to self-tan during your pregnancy.
