If you're a fashion-minded gal (which clearly you are!), you've no doubt wondered to yourself: Is it okay for me to ask that girl where she got her bag? It can be a tricky situation, because you don't want to put anyone on the spot, right? But sometimes, you just need to know—because you want one for yourself.
It can also be awkward, because if the bag is ultra-expensive, the woman might be shy about sharing that information. And similarly, if she got the bag on the cheap, she might want to keep her bargain-hunting secrets to herself. It can just be a tough position to find yourself in, on either side.
Well, we Who What Wear editors discussed the issue amongst ourselves, and came up with a variety of answers. Keep scrolling to see our discussion about whether or not it's okay to ask someone where she got that!
"It's much more awkward to not tell someone what brand the item in question is," Allyson continues. "The only time I get a little weird when asked this question is when the item is kind of fancy. I always feel the need to say, ‘But I got it on eBay!’ or ‘But I got it on sale!’"
"I never wanted to tell people where something was from, because I didn't want them to copy me—I mean, they'd clearly look better in whatever it was, right?!," Jessica continues. "Luckily, I finally learned the age-old lesson that sharing is caring. Now I find it really flattering and am happy to share."
"I'm often asking my friends the same question, so it's nice to be able to share our great fashion finds with each other!"
"Though if you don't know the person, it can seem a bit aggressive to flat-out ask," Kat adds. "I think it's nice to build the question into a conversation, and start with complimenting the piece."
"However, I would be lying if I said I didn’t feel a little awkward answering the question. Whether I’m wearing Zara or Alexander Wang, I either feel cheap or grossly pretentious in my response."
"Especially if it's an item I purchased on sale or that is mistaken as designer," Michelle continues. "I see no harm in bargain bragging!"
