9 Sneakers That Are as Cool as Sambas But Not Owned by Everyone
I recently saw a 5-year-old walking down the street wearing the same sneakers as me, which made me think that perhaps it was time to find myself a new go-to pair. Those sneakers are, of course, Adidas Sambas. No sneakers have taken hold of the 2020s quite like they have—they're kind of perfect. They come in tons of cool color combinations, they're wildly comfortable, and they somehow never really look beat up. I just wore mine in the pouring rain in New York City, and they still look new. If, like me, you're tired of wearing the exact same sneakers as literally everyone else from age 5 to 85, I'm here to introduce you to or remind you of a few alternatives.
Whether you want a retro look similar to Sambas or something completely different, options abound on the internet, so let's get to it. Scroll on to shop nine new and new-ish sneakers that would make great under-the-radar additions to your collection.
Adidas SL 72
Adidas SL 72 is the style that I see more and more of every day. They're similar to Sambas but are slightly sportier and far less ubiquitous.
New Balance 1906
It wouldn't be a sneaker roundup without New Balance. The 1906 is the style all of the cool websites like Mytheresa and Net-a-Porter are carrying, and Taylor Swift is one of the many celebrity fans of the shoes.
Asics Gel-Kayano 14
Asics Gel-Kayano 14 sneakers are hardly new, but the brand is experiencing a resurgence, with these being the most sought-after style.
Adidas Country
Another Samba alternative from Adidas is the Country style. The sneakers have a minimal '70s look and a high cushion, and they're made of genuine leather, which elevates the style. It's worth noting that both the Country and the SL 72 have been a part of recent Wales Bonner collaborations.
Nike Zoom Vomero 5
Nike's Zoom Vomero 5 sneakers made their initial debut back in 2010, and for one reason or another, they're getting attention again. If you prefer athletic sneakers that have just a bit of a retro feel, these are for you.
Veja Volley
If you like Sambas and want shoes that are pure lifestyle sneakers, meet the Veja Volley. You'll feel like a cool European person wearing them.
On Cloudtilt
If you missed out on the wildly popular On x Loewe collaboration or just didn't want to spend $490 on sneakers, you can get a pair of Cloudtilt sneakers for $160. They may not have the Loewe logo, but no one will be able to tell from afar.
Flower Mountain Yamano 3
If it's pretty sneakers you're seeking, Flower Mountain will speak to you. The hiking shoe–inspired Japanese brand is quickly rising in popularity. You can't go wrong with any style from the brand.
New Balance 9060
Another cult-favorite New Balance style that's constantly selling out is the 9060. Fans of them say the futuristic sneakers are wildly comfortable.
