This Is the Only New-Season Coat Trend I'm Championing This September

Autumn is finally here, and its trends certainly aren't messing around, with silhouettes coming oversized and fabrics packed with personality (think whimsical organza, high-impact animal print and dominatrix leather). Coats, meanwhile, are no longer an afterthought in the wardrobe hierarchy. This season, they are well and truly stealing the limelight.

My favourite outwear trend? It isn't a newbie, rather, it's a classic style you might recognise from the 90s' most iconic movies. Yes, the maxi coat is back: It's statement-making, grown-up and certainly isn't messing around when it comes to the winter coat stakes. Our muse for the coming months is now Kevin McCallister's mum from Home Alone. Seriously.

From The Row's clean-lined designs to Rejina Pyo's '70s-inspired brown patent, these calf-grazing styles sprung up all over the A/W 19 catwalks. Minimalists will love the tailored styles that come in heritage fabrics and classic double-breasted fits (Mango and & Other Stories have some great options). Or, for a more sporty finish, look to the padded, long-line puffer coats, which will tick both the fashion and practicality boxes. Our favourites have to be COS's khaki-green look and Topshop's beige hooded interpretation.

Whatever your budget, there'll be a style for you. Scroll down to see and shop the best on the market right now.
