We’re Fashion Editors With Very High Standards—8 Wool Jumpers We’ll Always Recommend
A wool jumper is an essential part of any tasteful wardrobe, but not all are created equally. From high-street finds made of regenerative fibres to emerging brands with the most buttery soft fabrics, these are the top styles that passed our rigorous testing.
Stepping out in winter and being confronted with blistering weather and darkened skies can only mean one thing—it’s time to invest in one of the best wool jumpers. These are pieces made of sumptuous yarn that wrap around you like a warm hug and envelop you in dollops of softness.
For the uninitiated, a wool jumper is a specific garment style that refers to a piece that’s made from natural fibres derived mainly from sheep. The most luxurious type of wool is merino, a fine and soft variant that’s both moisture-wicking and thermal-regulating. While cashmere, angora and mohair are other types of notable knitwear, they’re technically not wool, though they are commonly woven together to create a blend.
Where wool jumpers excel is in their ability to provide a layer of elegance tailored to the tastes of anyone who wears one. Incredibly versatile and premium in appearance, these are styles that can be slipped on over a sleek satin blouse as easily as they’re thrown on over a lace-trimmed camisole, making them a true workhorse in any well-edited wardrobe.
This season, wool jumpers have once again reclaimed their rightful spot as a high rotation item. Paired solo with black pleated trousers or teamed with straight-leg jeans and a boxy blazer, these are styles that not only shield you from the harsh elements, but also elevate any ensemble thanks to their buttery fabric and cosy exterior.
As this piece is a true staple amid cooler months, it also means that both high-street stores and designer boutiques are inundated with wool jumpers vying for your attention. That being said, you shouldn’t be expected to be a walking Rolodex of knowledge about which exact wool jumper is the best.
In fact, that’s where we come in. In an effort to ensure you’re as well-versed in the latest products of notes and launches worth adding to your closet as our shopping experts, Who What Wear UK fashion editors flocked to stores and raided their own jumper arsenal to determine which styles were really worth it. From modern classics like COS’s funnel-neck style to new favourites including With Nothing Underneath’s beloved and snug Cornwall jumper, keep scrolling through for the very best wool jumpers to shop now and love forever.

1. Reformation March Regenerative Wool Cropped Turtleneck
Style Notes: As a brand that’s beloved by It girls the world over, it should come as no surprise that Reformation’s knitwear has garnered a legion of followers for its cool cuts and sleek colours. Whilst there are many styles to choose from, I was drawn towards this delicately cropped turtleneck as a solution for days when I’m seeking an anything-but-boring basic. With slightly billowing sleeves and drop shoulders that sit right on the bicep, this style ever so gently grazes the hip bones, which will serve both petite and taller frames, and rides up just underneath the chin. As someone who is truly of average height, I didn’t find the cropped element of the jumper a hindering factor, as it didn’t really seem clipped short on my torso. Because of this, I really enjoyed how easy it was to tuck into the top of my trousers, as I sometimes find other lengths too bulky to style in this manner. My favourite thing about the style, however, was the fact that it is made from 100% traceable and regenerative wool that’s ethically grown at certified farms. Striking a balance between style and sustainability has never been more achievable.
Shop the Jumper:
Style Notes: The roll-neck features delicate ribbing across the hemline and sleeve, bringing a textured touch to this otherwise simple-but-effective shape.
Colours: 5, including this ice water blue, maraschino cherry, black and arctic white.
Material: 100% traceable NATIVA™️ wool.
Sizes: XS - XL
Pros
- The cropped silhouette doesn't actually reveal too much of your body in actuality.
Cons
- This piece is hard to find in all colour ways in store, though there should be enough of a cross
2. COS Chunky Funnel-Neck Wool Jumper
Style Notes: After being put onto the COS Chunky Funnel-Neck Wool Jumper by so many of my chic colleagues, I was immediately drawn to the style, thinking it would become a cornerstone of my winter wardrobe. How right they were, as the moment this oversized piece slid over my figure, I instantly felt the need to have it as part of my collection. I’m wearing a large here, which is bigger than what I’d usually reach for, but I felt the baggy shape really exuded a cooler and comfortable take on wool jumpers compared to other styles that I own. Whilst they’re a little more figure-hugging, this roomy piece not only allowed for a more strategic approach to layering, but also carried a luxurious air as it reminds me of styles you’d find stocked at The Row and Toteme. (Albiet at a fraction of the price.) It’s also effortlessly elegant, meaning that I can style up with polished razor-sharp pants or dress down with a dainty skirt and not worry about having to adjust any other element of my look to compensate. The fabric doesn’t drown me, but it is still a considerable quality that brings a soft structure to any outfit. The durability and heavyweight quality make this a style I know I’ll reach for year after year.
Shop the Jumper:
Style Notes: The warming fabric is made from high-quality wool that will ensure you stay well-protected from the elements in style.
Colours: 2; cappuccino and light-beige mélange.
Material: 100% RWS Wool
Sizes: XS - L.
Pros
- Once again, this is a piece that prioritises both people and planet as the fabric is sourced from farms certified to animal welfare and land-management requirements
Cons
- This style is already selling out in multiple colour ways and sizes.
3. With Nothing Underneath Cornwall Jumper
Style Notes: For Who What Wear UK's news writer, Natalie Munroe, no better style merits the title of best wool jumper than With Nothing Underneath's Cornwall jumper. As fluid and comforting as the coastal town it derives its name from, she tells me that the style has "very quickly become one of my most-reached-for knits." As she continues, "between the chunky design, the long-line cut and the slouchy fit, it’s one of the most comfortable pieces I own, while the striking shade lends it an elevated energy that sees it style well with my wider winter wardrobe."
Shop the Jumper:
Style Notes: Since launching in autumn, this piece has already become a best-seller for the British brand. Offered with a hand-made quality, the style runs true to size and features a tighter weave that also evokes a hand-me-down quality.
Colours: 2; navy blue and tomato red.
Material: 100% lambswool.
Sizes: S - XL.
Pros
- With Nothing Underneath's pieces are designed to feel like a modern capsule wardrobe, so this seamlessly blends with your existing shirting, jeans and boots collection.
Cons
- This one requires a little more tender, love and care as the brand recommends washing as little as possible..
4. Mango V-Neck Wool Sweater
Style Notes: To me, there’s nothing more subtly sensual than a V-neck. As writer Liana Satenstein pointed out in her fashion substack Neverworns, “it’s the most vulnerable, nasty of cuts!”. Regardless of your own opinion on the shape, it’s hard to disagree that the plunging neckline leaves quite a bit of valuable real estate that’s always so essential during wintertime. This is a period where thermals and base layers are a prerequisite, so why not embrace showing them off ever so gently through this tapered neckline? This Mango option proves that point entirely, with the chunky fabric offset by the revealed décolletage that opens you up to so many possibilities. Do you layer a humble crewneck white t-shirt underneath? Or add on a beaded necklace to further accentuate this area. Either way, it’s a style that can really do so much to transform your look.
Shop the Jumper:
Style Notes: With a vintage quality and refined sensibility, this Mango style is truly my favourite of the bunch.
Colours: White
Material: 41% wool, 40% polyamide, 19% acrylic.
Sizes: S - L.
Pros
- The ribbing around the neckline and sleeves makes this feel more designer-quality than its price point would hint at.
Cons
- Not of a high wool composition as it's blended with synthetic materials.
5. & Other Stories Cropped Turtleneck Jumper
Style Notes: As both Cameron Diaz in The Holiday and Billy Crystal from When Harry Met Sally prove, a white, woollen winter jumper is such a staple. This piece from & Other Stories is actually part wool, part cotton, which gave the shape a really slouchy feel but made the fabric super soft and breathable. It didn’t feel too hefty when wearing, but the rounded sleeves and drooping shape did add a slightly voluminous feeling to my shape. While this might not be a concern for everyone, I did want to note this as I felt it would be a challenge to wear under trench coats or bigger jackets without feeling like I was Matt LeBlanc in that one episode from Friends where he wears all of Matthew Perry’s clothes. In a way, this did make it slightly more transitional than other styles. I do think a wool jumper should be more streamlined, but it didn’t totally dissuade me from picking it up. To me, this is the perfect errands jumper that can be worn with low-slung jeans and loafers when running to grab a morning coffee or a style I’d layer when running to the movie theatres. For the price point, I do think you can get quite a lot of mileage out of it, I just want to caution that in person, the piece can feel quite spacious.
Shop the Jumper:
Style Notes: With a neckline that skims the jaw and sleeves that extend just below the wrist, this slouchy style is designed for those who want to bundle up during freezing temperatures.
Colours: 2, black and white.
Material: RWS Wool 54%, Cotton 46%
Sizes: XS - L.
6. Rise & Fall Cashmere Merino V-Neck Jumper
Style Notes: When it comes to having an impressive hoard of jumpers, Who What Wear UK acting fashion editor Sophie Robyn Watson is someone who fits that bill completely. "Since this Rise & Fall jumper fell into my lap, I haven't stopped wearing it," she It works perfectly for office looks, teamed with classic black trousers, loafers or ballet flats. Off-duty and at home, it drapes over my favourite joggers and shearling slippers with ease. Composed of a merino and cashmere mix, it's gentle on the skin and acts like a big, soft, warm hug. The medium grey tone is super easy to style with my existing capsule wardrobe. I sized up to a Large (I go between a UK10 and UK12 typically), as I wanted a relaxed fit. The high V-neck is a chic touch, and still allows for your favourite white tee to peek through. It comes in seven other colours, too! It's a real staple, and something I can't gate-keep any longer.
Shop the Jumper:
Style Notes: Evoking a sense of '90s minimalism with a tactile and thick quality, the deep ribbed hem and cuffs add subtle definition to this relaxed silhouette.
Colours: 7, including a poppy red, viridian blue, navy, buttermilk, and chocolate.
Material: 70% merino wool and 30% Mongolian cashmere.
Sizes: XS - XL.
Pros
- Despite being quite chunky, the fabric is still incredibly cushiony.
Cons
- Pills quite a bit, so requires extra attention when it comes to upkeep.
7. & Other Stories Oversized Turtleneck Wool Jumper
Style Notes: The beauty of wool jumpers is that they cloak the torso in a sheath of opulent material. Like how satin can make you appear more put-together and sophisticated purely because of the richness of the fabric, this silhouette has precisely the same effect. This & Other Stories style encapsulates this down to very way they’re stitched together. This style will tug at the heartstrings of anyone who prefers their garments to be generously sized but still feel like the majority of their body is cloaked in something really rich and refined. Because of the classy essence of the piece, this really requires little thought when styling. From the slit in the back of the neck to the ample length that gathers around the top of the thigh, this is a piece that really is the quintessential wool jumper. Look up the phrase in the dictionary and you’ll see a photo of this style reflected back.
Shop the Jumper:
Style Notes: The structure is certainly one of the most oversized, but where you might feel like you're swallowed in fabric, the opposite occurs instead.
Colours: 3; dark mole, burgundy and olive.
Material: 100% wool.
Sizes: XS - L
Pros
- The wool is traceable down to the very factory it's made from.
Cons
- The fit might not be for everyone, as some prefer things to be contoured to their body instead of baggy.
8. H&M Cashmere-Blend Jumper
Style Notes: As Who What Wear UK senior shopping editor Marina Avraam puts it, this H&M jumper is a great alternative for those who adore The Row's Ophelia jumper, but find the price of it outside of their reach. "A best-selling style for a reason," she tells me. "Despite it being labelled as cashmere, the style is actually 90% wool, which means it certainly qualifies for the title of best wool jumper, even with the slightly misleading title," she adds. "I could honestly wear this piece for days. Wool certainly is a fabric that is naturally deodorising, so this very well could be a possibility. I mean this to say that the comfort level and chic nature of this style make it one of the most reached-for pieces in my wardrobe. Styling it with everything from pinstripe trousers and kitten-heel boots to slouchier wide-leg trousers and trainers, you need not every worry about how classy you look in this style because the piece does a lot of the heavy lifting for you."
Shop the Jumper:
Style Notes: If you think you're getting a cashmere jumper out of this style, you'll sadly be mistaken, as only 10% of the total piece's makeup is this goat's fibre. However, if you were looking for a really lavish wool jumper that's worth the investment, you're in luck.
Colours: 5; dark beige, black, dark brown, cream and burgundy.
Material: RWS Wool 90%, Cashmere 10%
Sizes: XS - XL.
Pros
- Running true to size, the size range allows for most to opt for smaller and larger fits.
Cons
- Because of its covetable nature, you'll often find some of the more timeless colours sold out. But fear not, as these come back into stock as quickly as they get snapped up.
Shop More Wool Jumpers
Style Notes: If tailoring is what you're after, cult-favourite brand The Frankie Shop delivers it in spades. That being said, they also have an incredible selection of wool styles, like this taupe wool and cashmere blend sweater.
Colours: Taupe.
Material: 90% merino wool, 10% cashmere
Sizes: XS - XL
Style Notes: Given the fact that most of the world's merino wool is made down under in Australia, it makes sense for Hush, which was founded by Melbourne native Mandy Watkins, to embrace these roots in this trendy powder pink style.
Colours: 4; blush pink, burgundy purple, bright green and oatmeal.
Material: 100% Merino Wool
Sizes: XS - XL.
Style Notes: If money were no object, The Row's Ophelia jumper would be a style I'd not think twice about investing in. The craftsmanship and refined fabric make this truly one of the best wool coats on the market.
Colours: 3; sand, grey and black.
Material: 65% wool, 35% cashmere
Sizes: XS - XL
Style Notes: There are so many brands espousing to prioritise functional wardrobe fundamentals, but for Los Angeles-based label Leset, this proof really rings true. Fine in nature and slightly thinner than other options, this classic V-neck shape is the sort of thing you can wear in so many ways—tied around your waist, wrapped around your neck, or layered over a simple shirt.
Colours: Mulberry.
Material: 100% wool.
Sizes: XS - L.
Style Notes: Weaving, although of the intrecciato kind, is in Bottega Veneta's ethos. Though this style is technically knitted together, the artistry and workmanship of the Italian luxury brand are still apparent in this ribbed iteration. The gilded knot accents along the collarbone are a lavish touch, too.
Colours: 2; white and brown.
Material: 97% wool, 3% viscose
Sizes: XS - L.
Style Notes: Striped jumpers have been a staple in stylish wardrobes for over two centuries. This Breton stripe style nods to French sensibility without being too overt.
Colours: 4; black, burgundy, tan and blue.
Material: 70% wool, 30% cashmere.
Sizes: XXS - XXL.
