What to Wear If You're Going to Wimbledon
Strawberries and cream, the smell of freshly cut grass, and Roger Federer—Wimbledon is in the air, my friends, and if you’re lucky enough to be attending this year, we have plenty of outfit inspiration to ace your style. England’s biggest and most exciting tennis tournament officially starts on July 2, attracting royalty, celebrities, and luminaries, and along with them, it attracts impeccable style.
While the players must abide to a strict all-white dress code (even down to their undies), there is technically no “official” dress code for spectators. However, it goes without saying that there is an unspoken rule that attendees should make an effort, especially if you’re going to one of the hospitality areas.
As a brit (living in America), I have had the fortune of attending Wimbledon on several occasions, and some of my fondest summer memories are not only watching the first-class tennis players but also experiencing the sartorial buzz about the attendees. And we’d hasten to guess that if Meghan Markle makes an appearance this year, there’ll be plenty of style excitement.
So what does one wear to one of the biggest British events of the year? The key is to find the perfect balance between smart and casual. A white or floral-print midi dress will never go amiss, and comfortable (yet polished) shoes are essential (there’s quite a bit of walking to do from court to court)—think ballet flats, wedges, or crisp white sneakers. Because it is England, after all, don’t forget to prepare for unreliable weather—a cover-up such as a lightweight trench coat will do the trick. Scroll below for more style inspiration whether you’re watching from a fancy box or Henman Hill.
Dresses
Wearing white is always a stylish option—think a white cotton midi dress that’s cool and breathable. Floral-print dresses are also a much-loved staple at Wimbledon—guaranteed to solve any dressing dilemma. Alternatively, opt for chic polka-dot prints (à la Kate Middleton) or summery pastels to keep your look effortlessly chic as you sip on your Pimms cup.
Stylish Separates
Lightweight linen trousers or shorts and pleated midi skirts in neutral hues look cool, casual, yet smart when paired with billowy blouses and printed tops. Matching sets (aka co-ords) are also a nifty option that will pull your look together.
Comfortable Shoes
For the regular attendee, there tends to be a good amount of walking to do when you’re at Wimbledon, and shuffling in and out of benches calls for comfort. Sneakers are fair game—a polished all-white pair will do the trick. Ballet flats, pointed-toe flats, mid-block heels, and wedge espadrilles are also great options.
Jumpsuits
Don’t underestimate the power of an easy and effortless jumpsuit. Wear yours in crisp white or light stripes.
A Lightweight Topper
A linen or lightweight blazer is ideal for the setting, but don’t forget to bring something to protect you from the unpredictable British weather. An anorak or light trench is ideal.
Dapper Accessories
Have fun with the rest of your outfit. A straw Panama or bowler hat will add a charming touch. And a bold bracelet or necklace will look striking with a simple outfit. And don’t forget a stylish pair of sunnies.
