The Red Carpet Trend That Is Dying

When she’s not working with big names like Lupita Nyong’o, Constance Wu, and Diane Kruger or writing the bestselling book “How to Accessorize,” celebrity stylist Micaela Erlanger divulges her fashion expertise in our Ask a Stylist column. From the best places to source vintage to the secret to finding your most flattering jeans, come back each week for a professional’s perspective.

Award show season is year-round for me. The moment I’m finalizing last-minute details for one red carpet, I’m onto the next prepping looks and pulling gowns for the following appearance. In just the past year, I’ve styled over 1000 celebrity looks, and over my 10 years as a stylist, I’ve been noticing one red carpet trend slowly disappearing. Stylists and celebrities are taking more risks on the red carpet and stepping away from traditional gown-only options.

While gowns will always be a red carpet option, they’re no longer the only option. We’re seeing more variety in pantsuits and jumpsuits thanks to designers like Christian Siriano and Ralph Lauren, and the idea that the only way to dress a celeb for the camera-filled occasion is through a glamorous dress is dated. The red carpet has really taken a new form over the past few years, and I’m totally on board with this fresh take on dressing for the occasion. Below, see a few of my favorite pantsuit moments that I styled this year, and shop my picks while you’re scrolling.
