These Wardrobe Staples Will Look Dated in 2027—Here's What to Wear Instead
Every few years, a few pieces I thought would never go out of style start to feel a little dull. Nothing is wrong with them. They’ve just been everywhere for so long that my eye starts drifting toward something new, and that’s exactly where I am heading into 2027. I’ve been doing a massive cleanout dedicating each free weekend I have to a specific drawer or area of my apartment, I recently hit my basics and learned quickly what has to go.
Don’t panic, you don’t need to get rid of everything.. I’m keeping my crewnecks and black heels. I’m just pausing on buying more of them and putting that budget toward the swaps that feel fresh right now. Keep scrolling for the five staples I’m skipping next year and what I’m reaching for instead.
Skip: Deep V Tees
Buy: Micro V Tees
The deep V had a long, happy run as the go-to layering tee, and I still own more than I’d like to admit. Lately, though, the necklines I keep spotting on the chicest people I know have crept way up, and I’m following their lead. The micro V is all over celebrity street style and a modern way to complete a look.
Skip: Black Heels at Night
Buy: Minimalist Flats
Black heels will always be a safe bet for dinner, and mine aren’t going anywhere. But at every cool fashion event this fall, the coolest people in the room showed up in flats, and it looked so much more fun. The minimalist flat is thriving right now and your feet will thank you at midnight.
Skip: Crewneck Tees
Buy: Boatneck Tees
I’ll never fully quit the crewneck tee, and I’m not asking you to. I’ve just stocked up on enough of them to last a lifetime, so my shopping budget is heading somewhere a little more unexpected. The wide, collarbone-skimming neckline of a boatneck tee has a breezy, slightly French ease that works from coffee runs to dinner with friends. It makes your favorite skirt feel all dressed up again.
Skip: Barrel Leg Jeans
Buy: Flare Jeans
Barrel leg jeans were the cool-girl denim of the past couple of years, and I wore mine on repeat. They’re still fun, but the curved silhouette is starting to feel very of the moment, and I’m craving a shape with drama in the other direction. Flares bring a little ’70s swagger to the weekend, so they’re my preferred look of the moment.
Skip: Teddy Coats
Buy: Fur Trim Coats
My teddy coat has kept me cozy through more winters than I can count, so this isn’t goodbye forever. It just feels like everyone owns one now, and I’m ready for outerwear that feels more dressed up. Is there anything more glamorous than a fur trim collar on a snowy night out? This is the coat for holiday parties and late dinners uptown, the kind of piece that makes even jeans and a sweater feel like an occasion.
