These Are the Only Jacket Trends That Matter This Autumn

I'm afraid to say it, but the days of leaving the house without so much as a knitted layer are over. September has arrived, and with it, we know autumn isn't too far behind. I, for one, welcome the impending seasonal shift with open arms. Why? The jackets, of course!

I love jackets—in fact, I'd go as far as to say that jackets are one of my favourite things to shop for. Between blazers and bikers and some more unexpected iterations thrown in for good measure, nothing gives me the same satisfaction as investing in a jacket that will snatch all of my outfits.

Now, you might be wondering which jackets feel the most current for 2022. I asked myself this very question last week, so I set about finding the answer. After hours of research (read: scrolling), I can discern that below are the nine most important jacket trends 2022 has to offer. From classics to something new, which one will you choose? It's time to find out.

1. Shrunken Trenches

Style Notes: Trench coats are a staple in the wardrobes of British women, but recently, I've seen a crop of, um, cropped styles on the high street. Practical and timeless, they hold the same appeal and versatility as their long-length counterparts. Look for hooded versions for even more protection from the elements.

2. Fringed Shackets

Style Notes: Shackets (shirt-style jackets) have been dominating the autumn and spring months for the past few seasons. However, in line with 2022's obsession with Western styling, the coolest options now come adorned with fringing.

3. Bouclé Button-Ups

Style Notes: Want to know the secret to looking rich and unbothered 100% of the time? It's all in the bouclé, darling! Tweedy textures are synonymous with Chanel, and Chanel is synonymous with wealth. Not only that, but bouclé always looks so pretty—use a jacket in the fabrication to dress up everything from jeans to leather shorts.

4. Built-In Scarves

Style Notes: This trend might seem niche, but mark my words: It'll be everywhere this season thanks to Totême's covetable jacket complete with a fringed-scarf neckline. My new-season wish list? This jacket is absolutely at the top of it.

5. Oversized Blazers

Style Notes: Oversized blazers loan themselves to year-round styling, but I find them particularly useful in the autumn months. Why? Because they're roomy enough to layer over knitwear without sacrificing on the sleek silhouette. Genius, no?

6. Printed Quilts

Style Notes: Unless you hunt down trends for a living like I do, this is a trend that might have passed you by thus far, but quilted jackets in bandana and patchwork prints are inundating new-in sections right now. Pair with everything from wide-leg trousers to leather skirts for a modern take.

7. Minimalist Bombers

Style Notes: After flying under the radar for the past few seasons, bomber jackets are back in a big way for 2022, with everyone from Prada to Loewe showcasing them on the runways. The street style set have naturally followed suit and are currently favouring oversized, minimalist styles akin to the below.

8. Suede Patchwork

Style Notes: Y2K might still be reigning supreme this season, but hot on its heels is another throwback fashion timeframe—the '70s. From flared trousers to retro prints, designers drew on influences from the decade to inform their A/W 22 collections, which boasted plenty of patchwork suede jackets.

9. Classic Biker

Style Notes: Although basic black leather biker jackets have never really gone out of style, fashion people have begun favouring them once more, mimicking the moto looks that rocked the runways back in February. Of course, you can find a biker for any and every budget, but I think the high-end high-street has hit the sweet spot in terms of quality, construction, silhouette and value for money.
