Legally Blonde is 25 years old this year, but the outfits worn in the film are burned into the retinas of anyone who came of age in the noughties. With Y2K looking fashionable again, the film is being discovered by another generation partial to pink, and, ahead of the prequel, TV series Elle, coming to Prime this month, there’s never been a better time for a rewatch of the iconic movie.
Yes, there are moments that could be deemed homophobic, and the film uses some outdated language, but Legally Blonde’s story of a (pink) fish out of water is full of charm—and fashion. So much fashion. Following her ex-boyfriend Warner from L.A. to Harvard, Elle wears countless outfits that stick out like a sore thumb—like her Harvard submission video, which features her in a sequinned bikini, followed by a pink iridescent skirt suit for arrival on campus, so noticeable it causes one of the bookish students to yell, "Hey, check out Malibu Barbie!"
Elle, meanwhile, is one to add to the watch list. Set in 1995, the Prime series tells the story of Miss Woods at high school, moving from her happy place, L.A., to Seattle. A similar culture-shock storyline is set to come out in the clothing—which means, luckily for us, a full immersion in '90s trends, from the trademark pink prep of Clueless (also from 1995, and another classic for fashion lovers) to the plaid shirts and band tees of grunge. Basically, expect to be mentally shopping whilst you watch.

1. Pink Prints Charming
Style Notes: Elle’s commitment to her favourite colour is something to behold. ("Whoever said orange was the new pink was seriously disturbed.") This look, which she's wearing when we first meet her in the movie, finished with a pair of Barbie-style mules featuring a rhinestone heart, is the perfect introduction. The cloud print lifts the fuchsia hue and adds personality, whilst the classic noughties wrap-dress silhouette only makes it more enviable.

Style Notes: The classic after-dark dressing formula had its heyday in the early noughties (see also Paris Hilton and Jennifer Lopez for details). The take here leans more towards boho styling (also big in the era) thanks to the top's floaty chiffon layers—one to consider when you're next prowling pre-loved sites. We love this look even more because it's what Elle wears to demonstrate the iconic "bend and snap" move.

Style Notes: When Elle decides she wants to go to law school, her guidance counsellor winces at her major in Fashion Merchandising and comments, "Harvard won’t be impressed that you aced History of Polka Dots." Still, when she gets serious, out come the dots. 2026's infatuation with the classic print is only the most recent—this noughties version reminds us of its office-appropriateness, especially when combined with a skirt suit and a bouncy blow-dry. The red lipstick is a masterstroke. We do not object.

4. Double Denim the Dolly Parton Way
Style Notes: Jennifer Coolidge’s White Lotus character, Tanya (otherwise known as Peppa Pig), has served the internet some delightful fashion moments in recent years, but the actor has actually been on the case for decades. For her turn as unlucky-in-love nail technician Paulette, her take on double denim changes the game. Worn when we first see her talking Elle through her love troubles, the waistcoat and skirt combined with her half-up, half-down hair and pastel-coloured eye shadow has a country-queen feel worthy of '80s Dolly Parton.

5. Mermaidcore Could Never
Style Notes: Iridescent shades and shiny textures are a siren song for some of us. Elle tries on this rich blue bedazzled dress as a potential outfit for her dinner with Warner, where she expects a proposal. It's also a scene where we realise our protagonist is a smart cookie, not the "dumb blonde" that the sales assistant assumes. Whilst Elle doesn’t wear it to dinner in the end, the sequins and spaghetti straps very much make the cut 25 years later, with mermaidcore an aesthetic to note right now. Style Notes: What we wear to the gym has never been more scrutinised. Elle's workout 'fit is perfect for the current cool-girl take on exercise gear: track shorts and a Nike sports bra in easy brights, worn for the classic movie montage when she starts to get into her studying stride. Style Notes: Selma Blair perfectly plays straight-laced sorority girl Vivian Kensington (aka Elle’s arch-nemesis and Warner’s fiancé—for most of the film). Preppy is her happy place. This is clear from our first encounter, when Elle describes her as a "horrible preppy girl". With the look now firmly back in fashion's favour, her velvet headband, sweater vest and pearls—sitting carefully under her starched collar—are styling details to admire.
