I'm a Dress-and-Sneakers Devotee—Here's My Summer Inspo

Look, summer—as in calendar-official, real summer—won't arrive for another few weeks, but I've already been busy nailing down my uniform and it involves two things: a dress and sneakers. This simple combination has become a go-to of mine since moving to the East Coast four and a half years ago. Like peanut butter and banana or emo rap, it's not a combination you'd immediately want to put together, but somehow it works for pretty much any and every occasion.

Below I'm highlighting seven ways some of my favorite trendsetters are making the most of pairing these two seemingly dissonant pieces together. From more dressed-up ensembles that work for the office to cool combinations that softly scream "weekend fun", these are the ways of wearing a dress and sneakers that I'm excited about right now. And even if you don't like pineapple on your pizza, I promise this is a combination you'll find palatable (if not totally amazing).

A printed minidress is a summer staple, but to make things a bit more interesting, try styling it with unexpected pieces like a blazer and coordinated socks. Keep the sneakers simple and you'll have an outfit that pops without feeling too flashy.

A lightweight maxi dress works for the office or weekend fun, and my favorite way to wear the style is paired with a simple pair of low-top sneakers that won't get in the way.

Neon Dress + White Sneakers

Neon is the trend to try this summer, but figuring out how to pull it off can feel especially tricky. My take: Stick with simple white sneakers to balance things out (and bonus points if you finish with cool sunglasses).

I love a flirty dress, but I struggle with wearing something ruffly or floral without feeling like I've deviated from my personal style. To tone things down a bit, I like the idea of pairing my dress of choice with chunky sneakers. It's an odd pairing that works surprisingly well.

Mini + Sporty Sneakers

A tiny tank dress isn't for everyone, but I love it for the summer nights I spend grabbing drinks with friends. To keep things comfortable, my go-to is a pair of sporty sneakers.

You don't have to be a devoted sports fan to pull off a jersey dress. I'm partial to the style all on its own, but I also like to add a pair of bike shorts to mix things up. Then finish the ensemble with a pair of on-trend platform sneakers.

Wrap Dress + Throwback Sneakers

For the office, my go-to dress is always a wrap style. It looks dressed up, but it is also completely effortless. Finished with a pair of classic sneakers like the Nike Cortez, it makes for a polished but unstuffy ensemble.

Available in sizes 8 to 12.

Now you're all set to try out the combination.
