I currently own four black blazers, and I’m not entirely sure whether this is a problem or not. It’s been a fair few years since my discovery of “timeless pieces worth investing in,” and it’s fair to say that I’ve become quite the fan of investing in said items. Repeatedly. In my defense, this little collection (much like my black knitwear drawer) helps me refrain from becoming an outfit repeater for the better part of most months.
That being said, having recently found myself considering a fifth black blazer (on the merits of its boxy shoulders), I’ve begun to wonder if it’s time to mix things up. Just a little. On a mission to find F/W 17’s answers to those black-and-white classics I wear on repeat, I discovered Scripted—exclusive to Saks Fifth Avenue, the ready-to-wear collection offers up plenty of low-key-cool pieces that range from sporty to more polished.

Scripted Ruffle Hem Cropped Pants ($165)
Think you already own every possible iteration of chic black trousers? Throw this pair of kick flares into the mix. The ankle-grazing length is perfect for showing off all of this season’s statement boots, and I’m giving extra points for the added interest of the exposed-zip detail.
Scripted Faux Shearling Varsity Jacket ($225)
Shearling is having a major moment this season, and I love how it’s popping up in unexpected places. This collegiate bomber would already have been a fall essential (I can’t get enough athletic-inspired outerwear), but it feels ultra-luxe and modern in a textured finish.
Scripted Contrast Blazer ($275)
Note: Since I began writing this story, I’ve realized I actually forgot to count my dreamy three-piece Annie Hall–inspired suit. (Which means that I do, in fact, already own five black blazers.) Instead of taking the count to six, I’ll allow myself to invest in this equally wearable option: navy and black. It’s one of my favorite fall color combos, and I particularly love it in the form of this contrast lapel.
Scripted Ruffled Off-the-Shoulder Sweater ($150)
The black sweater update: part deux. Off-the-shoulder tops have proven themselves a trusty companion all summer long, so I'm taking them with me as temperatures cool down. This light knit feels restaurant-ready thanks to its sophisticated neckline, and the sportswear-inspired pleats add an on-trend twist.
