I Tried The Row's Margaux—Here's My Full Review of the Cult Bag

There are bags you wear, and there are bags whose vibes you inhabit. The Row's Margaux bag falls, unmistakably, into the latter camp. Over the course of a day, I stepped into the fantasy, wearing the Margaux 15 in taupe grained calfskin. What began as a practical test run has turned into something closer to a romantic entanglement (or, at least, the fashion editor's equivalent of one). It's not every day that a bag changes the tempo of your entire wardrobe and reorients the way you move through your closet. Then again, The Row isn't in the business of doing anything casually.
In most cases, I'm not easily seduced by It bags that social media hype has led me to believe I need to buy. I've cycled through enough of them to spot the difference between momentary hype and long-term investment. Honestly, though, there's something quietly special about the Margaux. Although there's no obvious branding and glaring logo (no need to be noticed!), the silhouette has become a visual shorthand for a very specific kind of person who understands luxury as a language of restraint.
"What really sets the Margaux apart is how quietly luxurious it is," explains Kimberly Bickle, senior site merchandising manager for Fashionphile. "You're not going to see any big logos or flashy hardware; it's all about the shape, the materials, and the craftsmanship. The design feels really architectural but still soft and relaxed, which is such a hard balance to get right. Every detail is super intentional, from the curved sides to the hand-painted edges."

The Row Margaux Bag Review
The Row Margaux Bag History
Launched in 2018, the Margaux was The Row's answer to the question, What does a handbag look like when it's been stripped of all ego? It didn't make much noise at first, but soon, every fashion insider had one under the crook of their elbow.
"The Margaux's rise feels like the perfect storm of timing, aesthetics, and influencer appeal. Everyone's leaning into understated, logo-free pieces that signal taste without trying too hard, and the Margaux basically checks every box," Bickle explains. It's hard to understate the impact the bag has had on the luxury space since its release a few short years ago. "It's minimal but not boring, refined but still wearable for everyday, and it photographs beautifully, which is huge for social media," she adds.
Zoë Kravitz, Jennifer Lawrence, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Kendall Jenner, and even Harry Styles were in head-to-toe The Row, many sporting the Margaux. It was slung elegantly over their shoulders with oversize wool coats, paired with soft tailoring, or collapsed into a slouchy puddle beside their airport looks.
"Our customers love the Margaux because it blends quiet luxury with an effortless cool factor," Bickle says. "The structured-yet-slouchy shape makes it incredibly versatile, and the lack of branding speaks to buyers who value taste over flash. It's the kind of bag that feels exclusive without trying too hard—perfect for someone who wants timeless style with insider appeal."
The Row Margaux Bag Details
The Margaux comes in four core sizes: 10-inch, 12-inch, 15-inch, and 17-inch silhouettes. (There's also an east-west version insiders love.) Most of the style set opts for the 12-inch and 15-inch bags, and bags at both ends of the spectrum are still popular despite being hard to come by. My Margaux of choice was the Margaux 15, a classic look every It girl has.
The Row's Margaux bag is defined by its signature trapezoidal shape, extended top-handle tabs, interior buckled side wings, and top tab closure. The entire bag is a nod to a doctor's go bag—albeit an elevated, chic version. The shoulder strap is 47 inches, which, in my opinion, is better nestled as a top-handle or elbow bag rather than one tossed over your shoulder.
Materials vary, depending on season and availability, but leather and suede are the most common versions. "The suede version is probably the most luxe—it's incredibly soft and gives the bag this really rich, textural feel. But it's also the most delicate, so maybe [it's] not the best if you're tough on your bags," Bickle says. I opted for grained calfskin leather, which is durable, easy, and perfect to lug around without worrying too much about scratching it. "The leather styles feel more structured and timeless. They hold their shape really well and are super versatile," she explains. "The canvas version is the most laid-back. It's lightweight, still lined in leather, and usually comes with contrast leather trim that gives it a cool, effortless vibe."
How to Style The Row's Margaux Bag
The Margaux bag has been styled with nearly everything at this point—black trousers and crisp shirting, oversize knits, vintage denim, tonal linen, etc. I styled the Margaux 15 with a black halter and airy linen trousers for a simple, no-fuss outfit. The Margaux is the anchor. It makes even a simple outfit look finished without appearing overrated. That's The Row's magic: You look like you have taste, not like you're trying to show it off.
How much does The Row's Margaux bag cost?
Prices range from approximately $3200 for smaller sizes in canvas up to $6400+ for larger calfskin versions. That said, availability is inconsistent. The Row famously drops small quantities, rarely restocks, and doesn't cater to e-commerce urgency. There's no "notify me" button—you either catch it, or you don't.
As such, a thriving resale market has emerged. "The Row Margaux performs really well on the resale market, often selling for around 40% above retail, which is impressive compared to many other luxury totes," Bickle notes. "Demand has noticeably spiked [on Fashionphile], with resale prices up about 44% year-over-year and search interest rising. Rumors about it possibly being discontinued have made the bag feel even more exclusive, driving up buyer interest. Overall, it's become a strong, sought-after piece in the secondary market.
If you're going secondhand, though, don't forget to go through a verified, authenticated resale website like Fashionphile. With the rise of hype comes the rise of fake bags, and while it's always best to go straight to the source, that isn't always feasible given limited production from The Row.
"When checking a Margaux, first feel the leather or suede. It should be super soft and high-quality, never stiff or fake looking. The stitching is always neat and even with no loose threads. Hardware is matte or brushed metal and feels solid, not cheap or shiny. Inside, you'll find a smooth leather lining with a subtle, clean logo stamp," Bickle says, nodding to the authentication tells to make sure you're getting the real deal. "Also, the edges are hand-painted perfectly with no messy spots. The bag should feel light but still have that soft, sculpted shape."
