10 Fashion Shows Our Editors Can't Stop Talking About

Just like that, another fashion month has come and gone. Over the last four weeks, our editors have been entrenched in all of the new shows that have happened from New York and London to Milan and Paris. Whether we were traveling the globe to see the shows unfold as they happened or taking them in from afar over Instagram, our offices and Slack channels have been buzzing with our thoughts and feelings about the most memorable runway moments.

What are the shows our editors can’t stop talking about now that fashion month has officially wrapped up? Ahead, team Who What Wear is weighing in about the fashion shows that made the biggest impressions on each of us. These are the collections that will be defining trends for the year ahead and are already reshaping the way we’re thinking about fashion now. "The last show of Paris Fashion Week, Louis Vuitton, left a huge impression on me. It wasn’t an easy collection where you quickly could see yourself wearing each piece, and that was the magic of it. There was a blend of so many aesthetics and influences, ranging from prairie to punk, all through an ‘80s lens. According to Vogue, the aim of the collection was to tap into the individuality of different style tribes pre–social media. In the age of Instagram style sameness (#stickofbutter dressing anyone?), Ghesquière’s 

approach is downright refreshing."

Fall 2019 marked Karl Lagerfeld's final collection for the house with a show that was as beautiful as it was emotional. Set inside the Grand Palais, it was one of the brand's most elaborate sets yet—an alpine village with a fresh dusting of snow and wooden chalets with smoke curling out of the chimneys. Models walked out in layers of houndstooth suiting, pearl chain jewelry, wintry knits, and ski boots—designs that feel both iconic to the house and current. It's a balance Lagerfeld always mastered just so well, right up to the very end. I'll definitely be investing in a piece from this collection.

"I never anticipated that Versace would be my favorite collection of fashion week, but Donatella took the brand in a refreshing new direction for fall, and I'm so into it. The brand's signature chains and harnesses were still present but were reimagined in '90s-style slinky cowl necks, truly inventive color combinations, and impeccable layering ideas."

"When everything else in fashion feels like more is more is more, it's refreshing to see a house like Balenciaga cut away all the background noise. The silhouettes were minimal, the colors (when offered) were restrained to one per look, and what was left was cool and minimal tailoring. One takeaway: Strong suiting will continue to lead for fall."

"Area was 36 looks of fun, and after viewing dozens of collections a day, a show like this feels like a breath of fresh air. Aside from the dripping crystals and party frocks (tried-and-true Area staples), it was the houndstooth looks that really caught my eye. We can anticipate this pattern being quite a big trend come fall, and if all goes according to plan, I'll be wearing this look."

"Bigger is better, as far as JW Anderson is concerned. I loved the brand's chunky gold link necklaces, billowing dresses, oversize coats, and wide belts—not to mention the beautiful prints and fun colors. All in all, the show was definitely a highlight of the entire fashion month."

"Simply put, Khaite crushed it. Not just for its first-ever runway show, but for all of NYFW in general. Each look drew an audible reaction from almost everyone at the show, and with good reason. From dresses to blouses to coats to jeans (!), the brand presented the best version of every item I'd want to wear next fall."

"The day I don't pick a Saint Laurent collection as one of my favorites will be a sad one for my wardrobe. There's something to be said about brands that don't just wow on the runway, but create commercial pieces you'll actually want to wear, too. And whether it was Hedi Slimane or Anthony Vaccarello, somehow that's always been Saint Laurent for me. Undeniably cool but ultimately wearable, too."

"Valentino was so good it gave me chills. Creative Director Pierpaolo Piccioli just gets better and better. He's maintained the elegance and beauty that Valentino is known for but made it cooler and more youthful. The prints and use of color were so interesting, and the tulle gowns at the end were dreamy. I can't wait to see who wears them on the red carpet."

"The epitome of glamor and elegance, everything about Max Mara's collection has me excited for fall dressing. Ian Griffiths designs for the empowered working woman with sharp tailoring and strong-shoulder silhouettes in head-to-toe hues of camel, ecru, and sleek black. And the coats! Don’t get me started on the sumptuous coats. Quite simply delicious!"
