15 Celebrity Outfits That Made Headlines and Impacted How We Dressed This Year
It might be hard to cast your mind back to the celebrity world of January 2019, so let us refresh you. It was the first royal tour of the year and well before Fleabag's second season changed our lives (hot priest). We didn't know what was to come. Because really, so much has happened. Olivia Colman has an Oscar! Jennifer Aniston is on Instagram! The Biebers are married! Keanu Reeves! Game of Thrones ended! But most of all, we've seen some epic celebrity outfits. And we're not talking about Oscar red carpet or Met Ball looks, as we will get to that later. We're talking about the straight-up, day-to-day—well, in the life of a celeb—looks of our favourite Hollywood style stars.
We're going to go ahead and say the name that we are now all thinking. Katie Holmes. Katie! Holmes! Did we expect to see article after article written about her personal style revolution? We couldn't have known his whole article could be dedicated to Kate Holmes's cashmere bra and cardi set. But in the celeb world of outfits, we've seen some fantastic styling tricks, epic coat choices, strong shoe choices and so much more. From VB to Tracee Ellis Ross, keep scrolling as we cast our minds back to some of the best celebrity outfits of 2019.
ZOË KRAVITZ
Of course, Zoë Kravitz is on this list. She only ever looks incredibly cool. With a penchant for The Row bags and tiny sunnies, she makes every outfit look effortless. This outfit comes out on top as it captures the colour trends of the year: beige and lime green.
KEY PIECE
SIENNA MILLER
This Sienna Miller outfit, though always hard to pick a favourite, just feels the most 2019 to me. The Carrie Bradshaw mules, the oversized fit of her jacket, and, of course, the beige. It just works.
KEY PIECE
THE DUCHESS OF SUSSEX
Love it or not, this royal colour combo somewhat broke the internet in the second week of January. It's hard to remember a time before little Archie was born, but this Meghan Markle look will definitely not be forgotten. Paired with her favourite: a Gabriela Hearst bag.
KEY PIECE
YARA SHAHIDI
It's hard to look anything but fantastic in straight-from-the-runway Marc Jacobs, but Yara Shahidi took it one step further and just made it look so easy and her. It also captures the cool return of the cardigan.
KEY PIECE
ALEXA CHUNG
We all at some point or another, wore this exact outfit this year and, of course, Alexa Chung made it look so incredibly perfect at London Fashion Week this February. The beige suit, paired with a fitted cable-knit jumper, and drum roll… the Chanel velcro sandals that we all lost our cool for. Perfection!
KEY PIECE
KATE MOSS
Queen of the all-black outfit, Kate Moss, started the year strong in a leggings-based outfit we couldn't forget. It might that we have a crush on her vintage Chanel bag or the structure of her jacket, but this whole look is so quintessentially Kate. Ever an expert wearer of belts, she layers her velvet blazer with a leopard knit like the style icon she is. Simple but so good.
KEY PIECE
CELINE DION
Would any of us wear this or even attempt to copy this look? Probably not. But it had to go on this list because it sums up the fashion boundaries that actual Queen Celine continues to push with her personal style. She's game to wear anything from the actual Heart of the Ocean to a turquoise tonal outfit with furry accessories. All hail!
KEY PIECE
VICTORIA BECKHAM
VB gets every outfit right in our books. She's the bona fide fashion icon of our office. So if she tells us to wear peep-toe boots and roll-necks under dresses, we will follow. Subtle in her ways, her styling tricks never cease to amaze us.
KEY PIECE
TRACEE ELLIS ROSS
Tracee loves fashion, as you might have noticed when she hosted the Fashion Awards earlier this month, and you can tell in every outfit she wears. She works closely with her stylist Karla Welch to find fresh styling tricks, brands, and shapes. We are obsessed with every look, but a casual puff-sleeved S.R. Studio. L.A. CA. coat dress in bright checked green is tough to beat.
KEY PIECE
DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE
This was the outfit that cemented Kate Middleton's style evolution. She just changed a few details in her looks this year that felt so fresh and fun (and rather VB!). She kept wearing some fabulously wide-leg trousers or pairing her tops and bags together in a rather fashion-led way that blew us away. We loved this Gucci top so much at the time that it had to make the list.
KEY PIECE
ZENDAYA
Zendaya's stylist Law Roach uses her personal style in such a fabulously interesting way. She's unafraid to experiment to shapes, textures and prints, and this outfit embodies those choices. So chic.
KEY PIECE
BEANIE FELDSTEIN
All throughout the Booksmart press tour, we couldn't keep our eyes off Beanie's class-with-a-twist style. With a penchant for bold prints, prairie dresses and ruffles, this look takes the cake. We can't way to see so many more style moments from her next year.
KEY PIECE
EMILIA CLARKE
Early this autumn, Emilia Clarke firmly proved that the oversized coat look is peak chic. She needs little else! Pair with a pinstripe jumpsuit, white heels and sunnies et voilà! Outfits like this are why camel coats are a forever love of ours.
KEY PIECE
NAOMIE HARRIS
If you need a lesson in pattern clashing, this casual Naomie Harris Miu Miu look is all you need. Double knits, over shorts, with square-toe combat boots. Um, yes. The answer is perfection.
KEY PIECE
KATIE HOLMES
Just jeans and a jumper, right? Wrong. It's so much more. Because it's not just a jumper—it's a cashmere cardigan. And not just a cashmere cardigan, but one with a matching cashmere bra. It's the bra that launched those reposts on Instagram and made Katie Holmes the unexpected celebrity fashion hero of 2019. This is a celebrity outfit that will be talked about for decades to come.
