H&M's Luxe Basics Are Popping Off Right Now—Here's What I Tried

I'm going to be honest here—until a few months ago, I didn't own many wardrobe basics. When I started going back into the office and getting dressed more often, I realized that I had fallen victim to the speedy trend cycle and was racing through different pieces that quickly caught my eye, instead of investing in pieces that would stay in my closet for the long haul. I thought minimalistic pieces would be boring, but in fact, those were the pieces I was missing to get the most out of my wardrobe. To my surprise, H&M has recently upgraded its basics and was my first go-to for finding elevated pieces on a budget.

I only added a few new pieces to my closet, but those few pieces have helped me think of outfits I never would've thought of before. I'm impressed, H&M. From poplin shirts to relaxed trousers, I got to try on a variety of H&M's luxe basics, and it's safe to say most of them passed the test. I always get compliments when I wear them and have been asked by multiple co-workers for the links to my purchases. If you want to upgrade your basics game and see what I loved from my H&M haul, keep scrolling.

H&M Dressy Jersey Pants and Waist Belt

My review: If I had to pick favourites from this try-on, it would have to be these pants and this belt. I've been seeing relaxed trousers all over my social feeds, but it's been hard to find a pair that fits in my budget, doesn't have to be tailored, and, most of all, is comfortable. I was hesitant about the jersey material of these pants, but they still feel and look expensive while keeping me comfy. This pair is low in stock, but there are plenty more relaxed trousers on H&M's roster.

The belt is the perfect pairing with these pants, but I know I'll be getting much more wear out of it with other pieces in my wardrobe. It's hard to find luxe-looking belts that aren't very expensive, so I truly hit the jackpot with this belt and would recommend it to everyone I know.

H&M Cotton-Blend Shirt and Regular Fit Crew-Neck T-Shirt

My review: I know poplin shirts are a fashion-set favorite, but I can be a little sensitive to the roughness of the fabric. This one is soft cotton, and I've already worn it multiple times in the past two weeks. It checks all my boxes.

When it comes to T-shirts, I've always found my favorite options in the men's section. This one was under £10, and it not only is soft but also has the relaxed fit I love.

H&M Sweater With Collar

My review: When I first tried on this sweater, I was shocked at how soft it was. Usually, cheaper sweaters have this itchy quality that makes me regret my purchase. But this? It's 100% worth it. It's already sold out twice, but I'm happy to see that it's been restocked so you can join the fun and get one of your own. The sleeves are a little on the shorter end, but that's probably my only tiny woe with this item.

H&M Rib-Knit Tie-Front Cardigan

My review: I have to say I'm impressed with the quality of knits from H&M. This one comes with matching pants, but I personally prefer the top on its own. A note on the fit: If you want a loose, comfortable fit like the model has, I would suggest sizing up. I love the fitted look, but I like my knits to have a cosy feel.

H&M Knit Merino Wool Dress

My review: Again, another top-notch knit from H&M. While I loved the quality of the dress, the fit wasn't exactly my favourite. If you're on the shorter side, this dress may be a little overwhelming. I wanted it to be more flattering, but it was loose in places I wouldn't expect it to be. I would definitely suggest going a size down on this one.

H&M Knit Silk-Blend Cardigan

My review: When I first wore this sweater, someone genuinely asked me if it was from The Frankie Shop, and to me, that's a compliment. I've never tried H&M's premium collection before, and this cardigan reminds me to take a look into that category more often. It's a thick knit, so I know it'll keep me warm on chilly days. Sometimes sweaters can shed, so I like how this one is a silk blend. Unfortunately, this is sold out at the moment, but I'd recommend taking a look at H&M's other quality cardigans.
