No Product Can Totally Erase Your Pores, But These 17 Primers Come Super Close
The first step in any great makeup routine is using one of the best pore-minimising primers.

Whether you're creating a no-makeup makeup look or going full glam, ask any makeup artist and they'll tell you, a great face primer is key. What they'll also let slip, however, is that the type of primer you opt for may vary, depending on your skin type and what finish you hope to achieve.
For example, if a dewy, luminous look is your vibe, it's best to start with a hydrating and illuminating primer for maximum glow. Alternatively, for soft-matte looks, global lead pro makeup artist for Smashbox Cosmetics, Lori Taylor Davis, recommends a long-wearing, oil-absorbing formula above all others (these make for great primers for oily skin). These primers also often have pore-minimising properties which work to smooth and blur the skin to deliver a seriously flawless looking base. (Whereas traditional primers for dry skin, for example, would deliver hydrating, moisturising results that might make pores appear larger.)
So, how do you choose a pore-minimising primer? Well, Davis recommends oil-free, cream-to-powder formulas that offer at least eight hours of makeup control with noncomedogenic silica—a mineral known for its blurring and oil-absorbing properties.
However, while the primer you choose can certainly help minimise your pores, Shenelle Mays-Smith, a licensed aesthetician and film and TV makeup artist, notes that skincare is the first step to minimising the look of your pores. "One great way to minimise the look of enlarged pores is to use a product with AHAs and BHAs," she tells us, adding that these acids have what she calls "a retexturing effect" on the skin.
She also recommends willow bark extract, a natural form of salicylic acid, as it helps keep your skin from becoming inflamed. If you're prone to breakouts and looking for pore minimisation, many primers (including a couple on our list) are infused with this powerhouse ingredient, so you get skincare and prep in one step.
Speaking of skincare, we often hear silicone primers, known for their pore-minimising properties, are a no-no for the skin, but Smith says they aren't as big a beauty faux pas as we think. "Silicone primers are generally considered safe on the skin and have conditioning and emollient properties, which help lock hydration into the skin and prevent moisture loss," she explains. This makes them great primers for mature skin. "The silky and spreadable texture of silicones has made them popular in makeup products. Silicone-based primers are [also] better on oily skin, as the silicone creates a layer that keeps the oil from breaking through."
If the thought of silicone on your skin still gives you pause, however, don't worry. Today, the best pore-minimising primers cover both silicone and non-silicone formulas, so there are plenty of options to choose between while still ensuring they deliver the results you're after. The Best Pore-Minimising Primers
- Best overall pore-minimising primer: Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez Pore Diffusing Primer (£26)

- Best hydrating pore-minimising primer: Milk Hydro Grip Hydrating Makeup Primer (£35)
- Best long-wear pore-minimising primer: Hourglass Vanish Airbrush Primer (£75)

1. Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez Pore Diffusing Primer
I can vouch for this pore-minimising primer infused with plumping hyaluronic acid, calming green tea extract, and skin-protecting vitamin E. With all those skin-loving ingredients, you might think its ability to provide staying power and pore minimisation is limited. Not true! The gel formula helps absorb shine and smooth the pores without making skin feel tight or going too matte.
Pros
- Hydrating gel-texture
- Infused with skincare ingredients
Cons
- It's a lightweight texture for a natural finish, so don't expect stage-like results
2. Nudestix Blot & Blur Matte Stick
Best multi-use pore-minimising primer
If you want a product that can function as a primer, balm-to-powder setting powder over makeup, or a means to blot away excess oil throughout the day, this silica-infused option—from a brand that celebrities like Sofia Richie Grainge love—is for you. Reviewers have mentioned using the stick over makeup can remove some of the pigment, but for me, taking a small brush to the stick and then gently dabbing in places where oil is peeking through helps keep my complexion products in place while the formula absorbs oil.
Pros
- Travel-friendly packaging
- Multi-use formula
Cons
- Can remove makeup that is applied directly on top
3. Benefit Cosmetics Benefit the Porefessional Face Primer
Formulated to minimise the appearance of pores and lines, this mattifying primer is ideal for use under makeup or on top post-application for a long-lasting, skin-blurring effect that also keeps shine at bay. Give the formula a few seconds to dry down before applying makeup. And for those with deeper skin tones, the beige colour of the formula might be off-putting, but the primer works well with all skin tones.
Pros
- Notable blurring effect
Cons
- Silicone-based formula may not suit all skin types
4. Dior Forever Velvet Veil Matte Primer
This noncomedogenic 24-hour foundation primer provides a blurring and mattifying finish that reduces the appearance of pores and blemishes and helps smooth the skin's texture on days when you're wearing foundation or going makeup-free.
Pros
- Great for acne-prone skin
Cons
- Expensive
5. Milk Hydro Grip Hydrating Makeup Primer
This primer is aptly named considering it grips makeup to the skin while hydrating it with hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, blue agave extract and aloe water.
Pros
- Hydrating gel formula
Cons
- Can feel sticky on first application
6. Hourglass Vanish Airbrush Primer
We can't talk pore-minimising primers without this Hourglass talc- and oil-free fan favorite. Formulated with micro-spherical powders that give the skin a soft blur, this primer smoothes imperfections, minimises the look of pores and fine lines, and absorbs excess oil, providing a canvas for makeup that will last well beyond its application.
Pros
- Great. for oily-skin
- Smooths and blurs
Cons
- Expensive
7. Clé de Peau Beauté Correcting Cream Veil Primer SPF 21
This water-based formula is enriched with a matte powder complex that hydrates for up to eight hours, absorbing excess sebum and creating a pore-smoothing base ready for long-wear, matte makeup application. This is also a great pore-minimising primer for mature skin as it hydrates while also blurring fine lines, too.
Pros
- Hydrating formula
- Great for mature skin
- Contains SPF
Cons
- Expensive
8. e.l.f. Liquid Poreless Putty Primer
While you may have heard of e.l.f.'s original Putty Primer, this fluid version is my top pick for an affordable pore-minimising primer. Alongside being easy to apply thanks to the tube applicator, it also applies smoothly and seamlessly, blurring and mattifying the skin as it covers. For just £10, you won't find anything better.
Pros
- Affordable
- Easy to use tube
Cons
- Don't leave the lid off or your primer may run everywhere
9. Lancôme Priming Serum 24 Hour Hydrating Solid Smoothing Primer
Starring hyaluronic acid and niacinamide, this skin-loving primer can be worn under makeup and for no-makeup days. It visibly blurs and minimises pores while keeping the skin hydrated. Plus, a little goes a long way! Only a pea-sized amount is needed to get all the pore-minimising, makeup-gripping benefits.
Pros
- Travel-friendly compact
- Hydrating formula
Cons
- Not massively hygienic compared to a tube
10. Yves Saint Laurent NU Blotting Lotion Prime
For acne-prone skin, salicylic acid can be a great help for keeping breakouts at bay. In this case, YSL has crafted a gel formula infused with salicylic acid and limonette extract that reduces shine and minimises the look of pores, all without depleting the skin of moisture. You can use this as a mattifying base to control shine.
Pros
- Great for acne-prone skin
- Contains salicylic acid
Cons
- Very dry or sensitive skin might want to be cautious
11. Milk Makeup Pore Eclipse Mattifying + Blurring Makeup Primer
Best pore-minimising primer for oily skin
Made with 90% natural ingredients, this noncomedogenic, silicone-free cream primer is made with pore-minimising niacinamide, bakuchiol to smooth skin texture and even skin tone, and lentil extract to help reduce shine, all packaged in a recyclable tube.

Pros
- Great for mature skin
Cons
- Not as easy to use as a tube applicator
13. Clinique Even Better Pore Defying Primer

Pros
- Skincare-infused formula
- Great for sensitive skin
Cons
- A natural-looking finish so won't be for those who are after an 'airbrushed' effect
14. Iconic London Velvet Smooth Pore Refining Primer
If you're someone who doesn't like the feel of heavy makeup on their skin, Iconic London's Velvet Smooth Primer is for you. With a mousse-like texture, it melts into the skin, providing lightweight coverage with a blurring effect.
Pros
- Lightweight formula
Cons
- Silicone-based formula may not suit all skin types
15. Supergoop! 100% Mineral Mattescreen Sunscreen SPF 40
You either love mineral sunscreens or you don't. Many say they offer a finish sans a white cast, but they miss the mark. If you do enjoy a mineral option, this one from Supergoop! works well as a primer, boasts SPF 40 to protect the skin, and gives skin a mattifying, poreless finish. Reviewers note the formula can pill, so let it dry down on the skin before applying complexion products. Taking that extra time can often prevent pilling. I say this from experience!
Pros
- Contains SPF
Cons
- May not be as long-lasting as other primers on this list
16. Huda Easy Blur Primer
Remember earlier when we told you there were some great silicone-free primers on this list? Well, Huda's Easy Blur Primer is one of the best. With an ultra-hydrating gel-like texture, it melts into the skin, smoothing and blurring pores while also controlling excess oil. Used in conjunction with the matching Easy Blur Foundation, it's the perfect duo for an air-brushed look.
