These 3 Sensible Coat Trends Are the Smartest Investments You'll Make
I like to dedicate plenty of time and effort to coat shopping for multiple reasons. First, coats are generally not cheap, so if I’m going to spend, I want to spend wisely. Second, they’re the one piece I’ll be wearing day in and day out throughout the cold-weather season, so it's crucial I choose a style that feels comfortable and chic. And last, I want to be able to wear the coat for years to come, so deciding on a silhouette that will stand the test of time is of utmost importance.
With this in mind, I’m all about investing in a timeless coat this year—in particular, long, tailored black, camel, and gray wool coats, the three versatile and classic styles that were spotted all over the fall 2023 runways. While these coat anti-trends may not exactly set your pulses racing, there’s something about the understated styles that feel absolutely right this season—stylish, sophisticated, smart, and sensible.
If you’re wanting to make a savvy coat investment, then take a look below at the three timeless wool coats that will work with everything in your winter wardrobe. Choose wisely—you’ll be wearing yours for years to come.
Black Coats
Timeless and sophisticated, a long black wool coat is one of the smartest investments you'll make—chic for day or night. Opt for sleek tailoring, from strong shoulders to cinched-in waists.

Gray Coats
Gray hues are having a major moment this season, and the long gray coat has emerged as one of the most ubiquitous and sensible silhouettes on the runways. From Wall Street–worthy double-breasted coats to elegant oversize styles, this piece will take you from boardroom to bar in utmost style.

Camel Coats
You can never go wrong with a classic camel coat—a style that will pair with absolutely everything in your wardrobe. Style over a casual hoodie à la Miu Miu or opt for ankle-grazing lengths as spotted at Max Mara.
