Behold: The 50 Campiest Beauty Looks at 2019's Met Gala

Beauty and fashion lovers best be prepared because this year's Met Gala might—and we're not just saying this—yield the most mind-blowing exhibit of looks to date. Following in the otherworldly footsteps of last year's theme, "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and The Catholic Imagination," this year's attendees are encouraged to go to exaggerated, over-the-top lengths to comply with the 2019 theme "Camp: Notes on Fashion."

Inspired by Susan Sontag's 1964 essay defining camp as the "love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration," this year's gala will (appropriately) be hosted by Harry Styles and Lady Gaga, and the entire event is being sponsored by Gucci. We're anticipating lots of color, lots of sparkle, and lots and lots of glamour.

A highly anticipated focus on fashion is the exhibit's signature, but no look would ever be complete without the expert application of smoldering beauty accents—the necessary makeup, hair pieces, and accessories required to trip celebrated couture over the edge. In fact, historically speaking, we'd argue attendees' beauty looks sometimes exceed the fashion. Beauty editor bias? Perhaps, but we'll let you digest the artistry below and decide for yourself. Keep scrolling to see the best exceedingly campy beauty looks we witnessed on the 2019 Met Gala red carpet.

The supermodel served up major I Dream of Genie vibes paired with her signature—perfectly sun-kissed skin.

Kristen Stewart

Nothing elevates grunge like apricot-dipped eyebrows paired with an ombré hair fade falling from platinum to coral to rich chocolatey brown. We're into it… we think. And we appreciate the unique inspiration, which, according to her hairstylist, Adir Abergel, was one-part "'90s heartthrob floppy with a nod to the '70s glam of David Bowie."

Must-have beauty product: Virtue The Polish Un-Frizz Cream ($40)

Zendaya

Photo:

Zendaya played a real-life Cinderella at this year's Met Gala, complete with a glowing powder blue gown, a neglected glass slipper, and exaggerated, perfectly swooped strands à la every Disney princess we've ever loved.

Must-have beauty product: Tresemmé Tres Two Extra Hold Hairspray ($5)

Tracee Ellis Ross

Photo:

Getty Images

Um, so Tracee Ellis Ross arrived on the Met Gala red carpet as an actual work of art. Her fashion and beauty approach was more subdued and classic than most, but we still appreciate the earthy wash of shadow, smoked-out cat-eye, and a punchy red lip—the hue was actually a custom confection made especially for Tracee called Catalyst.

Must-have beauty product: Kosås Color & Light Palette in Helios ($34)

Lily Collins

"I was inspired by Lily's Giambattista Valli Couture gown, so I wanted to create a Sharon Tate wedding look/Priscilla Presley hairdo," explains celebrity hairstylist Gregory Russell. I thought the exaggerated proportions and adornments really played into this year's Met theme."

Must-have beauty product: Marc Anthony True Professional Dream Big Volume Volumizing Super Powder ($9)

Emily Ratajkowski

We're beyond obsessed with EmRata's campy re-interpretation of Cher complete with spine-skimming strands, fluttering lashes, and beaming skin.

Winnie Harlow

According to the model's Instagram, her black and gold Met look is a tribute to her "beloved Caribbean Carnival."

Priyanka Chopra

"This look is camp to the max," says Chopra's makeup artist Pati Dubroff. "I was inspired by Louis XIV and his royal court, Dior runway extreme, but with the edgy spirit of Bowie. She is the perfect muse to Louis XIV and embodies a fantasy level of his vanity."

Must-have beauty product: Marc Jacobs Beauty Le Marc Lip Crème Lipstick ($32)

Kylie Jenner

To complement her sleek purple strands, makeup artist Ariel Tejada kept her makeup look comparatively tame with nude lips, bronzey lids, and lots of liner and lashes.

The must-have beauty product: Kylie Cosmetics The Bronze Palette Kyshadow ($42)

Ciara

Ciara's metallic emerald Met look left us speechless. But that hair? We're forever changed.

Must-have beauty product: Pat McGrath Labs Mothership II Eyeshadow Palette—Sublime ($125)

Jennifer Lopez

The only thing that could out-sparkle J.Lo's beaded Versace gown? Mega-watt lashes and quartz-drenched eyes.

Kendall Jenner

We rarely see Kendall Jenner step outside of her comfort zone when it comes to her beauty and fashion aesthetic, but WWW HQ collectively applauded the model's electric orange number. Leggy lashes and glossy peach lips served as the perfect, understated accent.

Cardi B

We're pretty sure this Queen of Hearts Met moment has been the red carpet highlight of Cardi B's career thus far, and we're ultra keen on her ruby red pout, in particular. It was a custom blend by makeup artist Erika Le Pearl using both shades listed below.

Must-have beauty product: Pat McGrath Labs MatteTrance Lipstick in Guinevere ($38) and Vendetta ($38)

The Game of Thrones actress stunned in crystal-dusted hair, glossy pink lips, and cerulean eye shadow for an extra dose of campy shimmer.

Must-have beauty product: Lottie London Eye Foil Iridescent Duo Chrome Eye Topper in Fire ($6)

Cara Delevingne

Photo:

If we had to describe camp, it would be Cara Delevingne to the T. We're not sure exactly what to ogle first, but that candy stripe of orange and her yellow-edged lips are good starting points.

Must-have beauty product: Tresemmé Keratin Smooth Shine Serum ($6)

Hailee Steinfeld

The singer and actress most definitely arrived on-theme—oversize bow, drawn-on freckles, and neon eye shadow included.

Must-have beauty product: Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Dollface ($29)

Dua Lipa

For Dua Lipa, it was all about the hair—oh, and a hearty dose of glittering purple eye shadow at this year's Met Gala.

Lupita Nyong'o

"The inspiration for Lupita’s look tonight was all about the theme, and we drew inspiration from camp icon Divine from some of my favorite John Waters movies," explains makeup artist Nick Barose.

“We played up the brows and eyes by adding lots of exaggeration to make her features look larger—almost cartoonish. The key was to keep it graphic with strong black liner and long feathery lashes."

Must-have beauty product: Lashify C Gossamer Lashes ($20)

Nicki Minaj

Pretty in pink, the singer emanated a modern ambiance of Marie Antoinette—but Nicki-fied, obviously, with bubble gum–dyed strands, pink and periwinkle glitter, and some thick AF jet-black eyeliner.

Stella Maxwell

For Maxwell, hairstylist Adir Abergel was inspired by Hedy Lamarr in Ziegfield Girl circa the 1940s.

"Stella's look was all about that center part and soft, brushed-out waves, which we layered with custom star explosions by Letlet NY. We wrapped them around the shape of her head with one line going down the center part for a dramatic finish."

Must-have beauty product: Virtue The One for All 6-in-1 Styler ($18)

Emma Roberts

“For Emma's Met look, the dress by Giambattista Valli was the real showstopper so we wanted everything
to support that, and not compete," explains makeup artist Nikki DeRoest. "We call it a 'Romantic Camp,' inspired by Ryan Murphy sitting at the table in Valley of The Dolls, we created a cheeky over the top vintage glam.”

Must-have beauty product: Chantecaille Philanthropy Cheek Shade in Joy ($40)

Kim Kardashian West

Photo:

According to Kim's go-to makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic, the inspiration behind the drippy look was "a Californian girl, stepping out of the ocean onto the pink carpet of the Met Gala—emerging from the water, dripping in crystals. She is camp by day."

Must-have beauty product: KKW Beauty Ultralight Beams Powder Singles in Iridescent ($18)

Gigi Hadid

Photo:

Maybe it's just because we have the icy essence of Game of Thrones on our mind, but we've never wanted icicle-spiked lashes more than we do right this second.

Kasey Musgraves

Photo:

For the 2019 Met Gala red carpet, country singer Kacey Musgraves (casually) rolled up in a Barbie convertible, carried a hot pink bag shaped like a hair dryer, and wore a very large platinum blonde wig. A customized Barbie pink pout was the obvious finishing touch.

Must-have beauty product: Pat McGrath Labs MatteTrance Lipstick in Polaroid Pink ($38) and Extravaganza ($38)

Halsey

With her gamine hairstyle and jewel-studded eyes and ears, Bella Hadid is a modern-day Audrey Hepburn.

Elle Fanning, where to start? Teal-striped eyes? Pink pouty lips? Sixties-inspired liner? Studio 54 hair? Charm-dangling nails? We love (and want) it all

Must-have beauty product: Essie Nail Polish in Strike a Rose ($9)

Joan Smalls

Photo:

Complete with braids, twists, and ultra-graphic eyeliner, Joan Smalls's approach to Camp was one of the edgier we witnessed.

Regina King

Photo:

Juicy purple eye shadow was a definite trend on the 2019 Met Gala red carpet, but we really love Regina King's take and how it amps up the drama of her champagne-colored dress.

Hailey Bieber

Photo:

Hailey Bieber toed the line between on theme or, well, not, but we'll give her a few points for her high, volume-pumped ponytail.

Must-have beauty product: Dyson Airwrap Styler Volume + Shape ($500)

Lili Reinhart

Photo:

Getty Images

"The inspiration for Lili’s look is Marie Antoinette meets Versailles, which plays off her epic Ferragamo dress," explains her hairstylist David Stanwell. "To match the vibe of the dress and play on the Marie Antoinette look, we swept hair up into a fabulous updo with intricate flowers for an absolutely gorgeous overall look."

Must-have beauty product: Dove Style+Care Extra Hold Hairspray ($5)

Zoe Saldana

Photo:

Getty Images

"The inspiration for Zoe was a juxtaposition of textures including Swarovski crystals and a deep purple palette, which created a vibrant contrast of color," says makeup artist Amy Oresman. "Her look was an elegant take on the modern embodiment of camp."

Must-have beauty product: Lancer Skincare Omega Hydrating Oil ($75)

Lucy Boynton

Photo:

Getty Images

Lucy Boynton was a vision on this year's campy red carpet with pastel blue waves, crystal-queued gaze, and glossy, petal-pink lips.

Natasha Lyonne

Photo:

Bold, structural, and graphic, we applaud the actress's authentic take on camp—an ode to Klaus Nomi, a German countertenor known for his amazing voice and very unique stage persona. Her kohl-rimmed eyes and visibly lined lips make the look.

Must-have beauty product: OGX Bodifying + Fiber Full Big Hairspray ($9)

Madelaine Petsch

No, the Riverdale actress didn't undergo a startling chop pre-Met, it's simply the artistic work of a well-placed clip-in bang. "She looked like a walking piece of art," says her hairstylist Marc Mena. "It was a surprising detail that added a little edge to her fantasy look."

Paloma Elsesser

Photo:

Getty Images

We are living for Paloma Elsesser’s jewel-toned, color-block eye shadow and love how it elevates the more casual effect of her denim gown.

Darren Criss

Photo:

Getty Images

We love boys in makeup. And we love Darren Criss's striking royal blue eye shadow. In fact, we might even take it for a test-drive our next night out.

Abbey Lee Kershaw

Photo:

Press-on jewels paired with salty slicked-back waves make Abbey Lee Kershaw look like a red carpet–worthy mermaid.

Awkwafina

Photo:

Awkwafina’s sparkly look is one of gold grandeur. Her sleek, old Hollywood updo bolsters the glamorous vibe.

Must-have product: Surratt Beauty Artistique Eyeshadow in Dore Rose ($20)

Charli XCX

Photo:

Getty Images

Perhaps not the campiest, but singer Charli XCX still rocked a very on-trend makeup look with a bright magenta eye and minimal face makeup and lips.

Saoirse Ronan

Photo:

Getty Images

Saoirse Ronan kept it simpler than her contemporaries with a soft brown smoky eye (with a hint of shimmer!), pink lips, and gently tousled waves.

Yara Shahidi

Photo:

Yara Shahidi’s diamond-framed eye is like the single statement earring of makeup.
