The Terrifying Trend That I'm Actually Warming Up To

If you were to take a two-second scroll through my IG feed, you’d realize pretty quickly that color isn’t my thing. No, I’m not averse to a bold hue. In fact, I always suggest color when giving styling advice. It’s just never been of interest for me personally. So you can imagine my thoughts on the highlighter craze we saw on the F/W 18 runways, from Prada to Valentino to Prabal Gurung. Yep, slightly terrified. Well, now that the '80s-inspired look has infiltrated the street style set (showcasing that neon items can work in real life), I’m slowly warming up to the idea that maybe it could actually work for me.

What are your thoughts? Intrigued by the look too? Well, if you’re interested in dipping your toe into that trend pool, keep scrolling to check out six seamless ways to make neon work in your everyday look. Plus, shop some of my favorite highlighter picks of the moment if you need further inspiration. We’ll test this one out together.

If you're up for really going for it all winter long, try a neon coat to make a statement. My suggestion is to opt for more neutral separates underneath to balance out the look.

Ease into the trend by testing neon out in your footwear selection. To avoid the full-on '80s look (even though I know that's a trend as well), give them a whirl with modern pieces like straight-leg denim and a patterned coat.

Give your go-to uniform the pop it needs with a vibrant top like this street style star is showcasing with her neon sweater, blazer, jeans, and booties.

A highlighter-hued bag is bold without being too over-the-top if that's more your style. I'd suggest going for a yellow or pink style for the most forward look.

If you want to try a neon tee, consider styling one with more polished pieces like wide-leg trousers and heels for a balanced and elevated ensemble.

This outfit proves that just a touch of the highlighter trend—a belt—can still have a massive effect.
