I Spent All Afternoon Trying H&M's Chicest Knitwear—These 9 Pieces Look Deceptively Expensive
From fine-knit cardigans to chunky cashmere jumpers, I put H&M's knitwear to the ultimate test.

Now that we're in deep autumn territory, knitwear is officially front of mind, and hunting down the very best styles—without spending a fortune—feels like a full-time job in itself. The type of knitwear that doesn’t pill, snag or lose its shape after one wash isn’t easy to come by, and as a seasoned shopping editor, I’ve become somewhat of an expert in the realm of elevated knits. One brand that continues to surprise me? H&M.
I know what you’re thinking. With prices often starting around £10, H&M might not be the first destination that springs to mind when you hear the word “expensive.” But one of my all-time favourite jumpers—a style I’ve worn on repeat for over seven years—happens to be from the high-street retailer. If that isn’t a testament to the staying power of the brand’s knits, I don’t know what is—you just have to know what you're looking for. What makes H&M stand out is the sheer breadth of choice. From chunky roll-necks to fine-knit cardigans and even 100% cashmere pieces, the brand has quietly become a one-stop shop for good knitwear that looks far more premium than the price tag suggests.
So what makes certain pieces feel more luxurious than others? For me, it’s all in the details: fabric blends that drape well, ribbing that keeps its structure, and silhouettes that strike that sweet spot between timeless and contemporary. These subtle touches are what give a high-street jumper or cardigan the same appeal as a designer one. Still, I’ll admit it’s not always easy to tell online which pieces will live up to the hype. That’s why I’ve decided to put H&M’s new-season knitwear to the test myself by spending an inordinate amount of time in the H&M changing room—and I’ll be reporting back only on the styles that are truly worth adding to your autumn wardrobe. Scroll on for my top picks.
Shop The Most Expensive-Looking H&M Knits:
1. Jacquard knit
This jacquard knit immediately gave me Clueless energy, in the best way. It has that subtle ’60s preppy nostalgia but feels incredibly soft and sits just right on the body. I can already see myself styling it with light-wash, baggy jeans and classic black loafers—the kind of look that nails effortless prep without trying too hard.
2. Oversized Mohair Knit
If I had to commit to just one knit for autumn, it would be this. As soft as it looks (I can vouch for that), this mohair-blend jumper is part of the new AW25 drop and comes in 11 shades, stripes included. The oversized cut gives it that effortless, off-duty slouch I love, and while I don’t find it particularly itchy, I’d still layer a thin long-sleeve underneath if you’re on the sensitive side. It’s the kind of piece you’ll end up reaching for on repeat.
3. Wool Cardigan
This cardigan sells out year after year, and the moment I tried it on I immediately understood why. The slightly fitted waist gives a subtle cinch, and I’m especially taken with the deep tan shade, which feels like a chic alternative to classic beige. I can already see it paired with grey pinstripe trousers and loafers for the perfect office-ready look.
4. Cashmere Jumper
Of course, I had to tell you about the brand’s best-selling wool jumper. The cashmere blend feels every bit as soft as it looks, while the ribbed sleeves and neckline give it that premium finish you’d expect from something triple the price. Honestly, I could wear this all year without tiring of it— you’d have to pry it from my hands. While the cream (which I have at home) is nearly sold out, shop the equally chic black version below.
5. Collared Cardigan
This fine-knit cardi is one of those staples you end up reaching for again and again (and again). The moment I tried it on, I knew it was a keeper. Available in a wide range of shades, its versatility is genuinely off the charts. It’s just that little bit more elevated than your average basic, which is why I think it’s perfect for the office as well as off-duty days. Plus, it's so soft.
6. Gold Button Cardigan
From the gleaming gold buttons to the ribbed-knit finish, this cardigan looks far more expensive than its price tag suggests. The slightly oversized cut gives it a relaxed ease, but the moment I put it on, I instantly felt more pulled-together. It’s the kind of knit that works as seamlessly with jeans and loafers as it does layered over a slip skirt with slingbacks.
7. Striped Jumper
The Breton stripe will forever give me Parisian energy, and you’d be forgiven for mistaking this one for Toteme. The addition of a turtleneck makes it feel even chicer, while the oversized fit gives that cocooned, wrapped-up feeling I can’t get enough of.
8. Collared Jumper
A collared jumper is my favourite styling hack for instantly looking smarter in super-casual clothes. The sharp collar gives it that preppy edge I love, and it feels just as polished with tailored trousers for the office as it does thrown on with jeans at the weekend.
9. Argyle Jumper
I’m really into argyle this autumn, so naturally I was drawn straight to this cosy wool knit. The V-neckline makes it ideal for layering—I’d slip a neutral shirt or a fine roll-neck underneath. Styling-wise, you can go maximal with a clashing checked coat or keep it sleek with a head-to-toe monochrome look.
