Bring On the Transitional Weather—18 Perfectly Chic Pieces That Will Sell Out Before Autumn Hits
We're technically still in summer, but judging by the recent stretch of rain in the UK vs the possibility of a heatwave, it feels like we're already inching towards that in-between phase when the weather can't make up its mind, and as such, neither can our wardrobes. You know the drill: it's too early for full-on knits, but breezy dresses aren't quite cutting it anymore. This is where transitional dressing comes into play. It's not just about layering for practicality; in-between dressing means striking that balance between pieces you can wear now and the ones that'll take you well into next season. We're talking lightweight jackets that pull everything together, shoes you can wear with or without socks and trousers that aren't too heavy but still feel considered. When considering this, I always find myself gravitating towards Free People, not just because its site is very good at making me want things, but because the brand just gets transitional dressing.
Thankfully, Copenhagen Fashion Week also comes around every August to help, and is the most inspiring event in the fashion calendar for those casual-yet-cool looks that bridge this gap between seasons. Taking place this week, my feed is already full of cool-girl transitional outfits that are getting me thinking that maybe now is the perfect time for a pre-season wardrobe refresh. What's standing out so far? Accessories are definitely having a moment—from slouchy belts slung low on the hip to sheer socks and playful headscarves that add just the right amount of detail to an otherwise pared-back look. There's also a lot of clever layering happening: crochet sarongs worn over denim, delicate lace pieces toughened up with oversized outerwear, and stripes reworked in ways that feel anything but classic. Trousers have gone full-volume too—whether it's balloon legs, parachute shapes or something slightly bloomer-esque, it all feels fresh, directional and, most importantly, wearable.
Free People has nailed that slightly undone effort-meets-ease feel that works when you're hopping between summer and early autumn. Free People has a way of curating new-in pieces that feel like exactly what my wardrobe is missing: boat shoes that aren't too preppy, barn jackets that don't feel too countryside cliché, jeans that are genuinely flattering, and those pretty broderie anglaise blouses that softness to your everyday line-up. This kind of shopping isn't just about buying for the sake of it (though I won't pretend I haven't had a scroll or two just for fun), but rather these are pieces that plug gaps, add polish and carry me through the tricky dressing moments that fill my calendar this time of year.
There are a few standout pieces I'll be adding to my wardrobe, including the We the Free Good Luck Mid-Rise Barrel Jeans (the ones that always sell out) and a barn jacket that's already on heavy rotation from festival season. Some of the pieces are more of an investment, but I'm looking at this with longevity in mind. There are ballet flats I can wear now sans socks and later with a pair of tights—a coloured pair would look fab—and blouses that will slot perfectly into my summer midi-skirt looks without feeling too "done". I've been building a bit of a Free People collection over the years, and these new additions will only add variety and versatility. With all that in mind, I've rounded up the stand-out staples and hero pieces that will see you through the in-between days that bring rain, shine, showers and everything in-between.
