This Underrated Item Is Like a Magic Wand for Fixing Weak, Damaged Nails
Recommended by nail experts and derms alike.
Have you ever noticed a decline in the overall health and appearance of your natural nails after a stint with gel polish or press-on nails? If your answer is a resounding yes, rest assured you're not alone in the struggle to maintain healthy nail beds. In fact, there are products specifically designed to fix and prevent future nail damage called nail strengtheners—a category of fast-acting, simple treatments that can be swiped onto the nail for stronger, smoother, and shinier nails. Each offers different benefits, from tinted colors to fast-drying properties, but can create game-changing results with consistent use.
"A good nail strengthener should support the natural nail without simply making it extremely hard," says Donna Charloff, MiniLuxe service and in-studio product director. Double board-certified dermatologist Brendan Camp, MD, agrees that these formulas should "fortify the nail" while supporting growth with a cocktail of proteins, vitamins, and minerals that revive dry, brittle, and cracked nails and prevent future damage. However, this isn't to say that these strengtheners will make your nails hard, per se. "Nails need a certain amount of flexibility—when they become too rigid, they can actually be more prone to snapping and breaking," Charloff adds. Think of these restorative nail elixirs as the right face mask for dry skin, or the proper vitamin C serum for hyperpigmentation.
Even if you don't normally get gel and acrylic manicures, your natural nails could always use some TLC. We found the best nail strengtheners on the market after speaking with nail experts and dermatologists, and we tried a handful ourselves. Keep reading for the 14 formulas worth implementing today.

Best Overall: OPI Nail Envy Strengthener
Pros: Protects nails against chipping, peeling, and splitting
Cons: None we can think of
Key Ingredients: biotin, calcium, vitamins A, C, and E, Tri-Flex Technology
If you want stronger nails in days, consider adding this OPI favorite to your product lineup. In addition to being available in a variety of shades other than clear, Camp says this nail-strengthening product "fortifies the nail with ingredients like biotin, calcium, and vitamins A, C, and E." It's also infused with the brand's patented Tri-Flex Technology for healthy-looking, beautiful nails in one week. Nail expert and salon founder Maryna Slynko also recommends this formula. "I like that it creates a reinforcing layer over the natural nail, helping protect it from everyday bending, splitting, and breakage while it grows," she shares. Safe to say this one is here to stay.
Customer Review: "This is a must-have in the vanity! It really has helped strengthen my nails, goes on clear so [it] can be used under a nail polish! Fantastic product and would definitely recommend."
Best Drugstore: Orly Nail Defense
Pros: Bonds splitting layers together, prevents peeling, adds protective layer
Cons: Won't give you hardened strength for long growth
Size: 6 oz. | Key ingredients: Gelatin
It can be hard to locate a wide variety of nail strengtheners unless you're shopping online or at a beauty supply store, but Orly's Nail Defense is a reliable and reasonably priced pick that you can nab in-store in a pinch. Slynko particularly likes this formula for "nails that are brittle or prone to peeling and splitting," as it bonds the separating layers together for a smoother growth process. "It works as a protective strengthening treatment and can be useful when the goal is to give a compromised nail plate additional support during growth," she adds.
Customer review: "This product did actually work for me. It helps by adding a strong protective coat to your nails with proteins. I used to bite my nails, and they were in pretty bad shape, but this brought them back to life wonderfully."
Best Budget: Sally Hansen Advanced Hard as Nails Strengthener
Pros: Diminishes the appearance of ridges and cracks, utilizes natural ingredients, low price point
Cons: May cause slight yellowing of nail bed
Key Ingredients: soy, omega-3
Sally Hansen's always-affordable and ultra-effective Advanced Hard as Nails Strengthener protects and strengthens nails with natural omega-3 and soy to diminish the look of ridges while preventing breakage and chipping. This one is unique because it uses a nylon formula that not only fortifies the nails but also prevents peeling from occurring. I have a personal connection to it since generations of women in my family keep it in their beauty cabinets!
Customer Review: "These have really done a number on my nails. My nails used to be brittle and weak, but once I started using this, I have had two breakages over the course of three months. I would break my nails almost every week. I would recommend this in a heartbeat. I try to apply it once or twice a week on my nails, and it works wonders."
Best Finish: Manucurist Active Shine Nail Strengthener Polish
Pros: Offers a radiant finish, fortifies nails, packed with plant-based actives
Cons: On the expensive side
Key ingredients: Beetroot extract, AHAs, hexanal
If you're looking for a nail strengthener that gives you the same benefits plus a bit of eye-catching pizzazz, look no further than Manucurist's Active Shine—a botanical nail strengthener that cloaks each nail in shiny, good-for-you lacquer. Slynko calls this "a more modern option" for those who want strengthening treatments "while maintaining a natural, polished appearance" that extends beyond a clear coat. "It’s a nice choice for someone who wants both nail care and a clean-looking finish," she adds.
Customer review: "This was my second purchase of the Active Shine. […] Having used it for a while, I am more than happy with it. This is an easy-to-use, low-maintenance nail polish that provides a lovely pearlescent look whilst acting as a nail treatment at the same time."
Best Vegan: Miniluxe Pure Strength Nail Strengthener
Pros: Deeply nourishing for weak nails, made almost entirely from plant-based ingredients
Cons: Won't offer the "hardened" effects you get with some others
Key ingredients: Not listed
Though Charloff is partial to the Miniluxe Pure Strength, she vouches for its efficacy due to its formula of over 80% plant-based ingredients, which offer a skincare-like approach to nails and shield the plate in a protective layer of nutrients. "We intentionally chose a cleaner, more considered ingredient profile rather than formulating for the most dramatic hardening effect possible," she explains. "That distinction is important. Pure Strength may not create the same immediate, ultra-hard feeling you can get from some traditional nail hardeners, but that isn’t necessarily our goal. We want to help reinforce and protect the natural nail while maintaining healthy flexibility," she adds. "For us, nail health is the priority."
Customer review: "My nails tend to break easily, and I have wanted to try a nail-strengthening treatment as I want long natural nails. I have long nails that I never knew I could grow!! I have seen crazy growth and strength from regularly using this product. It's a winner, and I am amazed at how easy it was!"
Best for Brittle Nails: Jinsoon HyperRepair
Pros: Nourishing formula, prevents nails from breaking and chipping
Cons: Nothing of note
Key Ingredients: 3 AHAs (glycolic acid, malic acid, lactic acid), vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin B5, hexanal
Created by editorial manicurist Jin Soon Choi (the talent behind iconic looks for everyone from Gigi Hadid to Sabrina Carpenter), the Hyper Repair Nail Treatment will restore nail health after just two applications and can be worn alone or under nail polish. I like to think of this one as a coat of armor against chipping and breakage. It's also unscented and applies smoothly and evenly.
Customer Review: "I used this as a first base on my manicure and pedicure, and I could tell a difference with the first use. Pedicure is still going strong at 4 weeks, and manicure lasted 2 weeks."
Best for Growth: Londontown Get Strong Nail Hardener
Pros: Noticeably harder nails within one week, encourages growth
Cons: Does not provide instant results
Key Ingredients: Proprietary Florium Complex
Using two coats of Londontown's Kur Get Strong Nail Hardener every other day for two weeks fortifies and hardens the nail plate. It's powered by the brand's unique proprietary Florium Complex to deliver hydration and nutrients for healthy nails, while patented multipolymer technology creates a strong, shield-like barrier. Simply apply it to clean nails and follow with your favorite polish.
Customer Review: "My nails had started being dry and breaking easily, so I ordered this after reading reviews. I'm just finishing my 3rd week, and my nails have successfully grown out like they used to. Easy to apply with a wider brush applicator and dries quickly."
Best Quick-Drying: Static Nails Instant Strength Nail Hardener
Pros: Multifunctional formula, primes nails for polish, infused with botanical oils, dries impressively fast
Cons: No complaints here
Key Ingredients: Apricot oil, safflower oil, bamboo
The three-in-one Instant Strength Nail Hardener immediately strengthens natural nails while preventing nails from bending, breaking, splitting, and chipping over time. Its clear and unscented formula includes nourishing natural antioxidants as well as apricot oil, safflower oil, and bamboo. I love how quickly it dries (in just five to 10 minutes), meaning I can apply and go.
Customer Review: "I started using this instead of the base coat because one of my nails started splitting on the side. It worked like a charm at hiding the imperfection and preventing what would've been a painful break! I was able to let my nails grow out for a few weeks before cutting them down, and my nails are so much stronger now even without polish on."
Best Base Coat: Manucurist S.O.S. Base Coat
Pros: 2-in-1 product, prolongs polish wear, no harsh scent
Cons: May not offer as impressive results as a dedicated nail strengthener
Key Ingredients: AHAs, vitamin C, vitamin B5, hexanol
While all the aforementioned products are designed to strengthen and protect nails, Manucurist's S.O.S. Nail Strengthener is unique in that it restructures and nourishes the nail plate. Using vitamin B5, vitamin C, and AHAs, S.O.S. Nail Strengthener strengthens and moisturizes nails. Designed to be used between two harsh polish applications, it can be applied twice a week as a treatment or as a base coat.
Customer Review: "I enjoy using this product; it worked great for me. I needed something to help me with my brittle and breaking nails, and it worked perfectly! I also like that the smell is not as strong and chemical, and it dries faster than expected."
Best Long-Wearing: Tenoverten The Foundation
Pros: Doubles as a base coat, prevents cracking and chipping, offers long wear
Cons: Slightly high price
Key Ingredients: Horsetail-leaf extract, vitamin E
As a beauty editor, I'm always enamored with nailcare products that not only improve the appearance of natural nails but also nourish them over time. The Foundation Base Coat is a shining example of this, being both a base coat and nail strengthener infused with moisturizing vitamin E and horsetail-leaf extract. It also makes manicures last longer by prolonging polish adhesion and preventing cracks.
Customer Review: "The base coat is great. Really adheres to the nail and helps keep the polish on. I was able to keep my manicure mostly intact for seven days—which I consider a big win!"
Best Keratin Treatment: CND RescueRxx Nail Care Daily Keratin Treatment
Pros: Dries quickly, nutrient-packed formula, no greasy finish
Cons: High price
Key Ingredients: Keratin, jojoba oil
Most of us have used keratin treatments to support the health of our hair, but did you know keratin can be used to repair damaged, brittle nails? CND's best-selling RescueRxx Daily Keratin Treatment is gentle enough for daily use and has a formula clinically proven to improve the overall health and appearance of nails in one week. I added this to my beauty routine by massaging it onto my bare nails before applying hand cream.
Customer Review: "I have been using this nail treatment for only 10 days, and I already see a great improvement in my nails—they stopped breaking and started growing! I have tried all kinds of treatments available on the market, and this is the first that works for me!"
Best 17-Free: Ella+Mila Firm Foundation Nail Hardener + Base Coat
Pros: Promotes the growth of strong, healthy nails, offers longer-lasting manicures, free from common irritants
Cons: None we can think of
Key Ingredients: n/a
Ella+Mila's two-in-one nail strengthener and base coat offers impressive polish adhesion and strengthening-treatment properties for healthy nails while also being 17-free—aka, made without several of the potential toxins found in most traditional nail formulas. It can be used on its own as an effortless, easy nail look or as a base coat with polish over it. The secret is all in the application style: Try applying one coat to dry, clean nails, using it two to three times per week over two weeks as a nail polish strengthener.
Customer Review: "I tried this brand and the nail hardening treatment because nothing else seemed to work. I saw good reviews and researched to determine that Ella and Mila does not contain dangerous chemicals. I've been very impressed, and my nails are growing and getting stronger and stronger! They no longer peel and snap."
Best Jelly: Butter London Jelly Preserve Nail Strengthening Treatment
Pros: Repairs nail plates after harsh treatments, offers a sheer burst of color
Cons: Not ideal for full-coverage looks
Key Ingredients: Vitamin E, tea tree oil, hydrolyzed keratin, arginine
This isn't the first time I've sung the praises of this jelly-like Butter London nail-strengthening treatment. This came highly recommended to me by a Who What Wear beauty editor two years ago, and I've been obsessed with it ever since. Not only is it beyond aesthetically pleasing to the eye after it dries (the product is offered in three stylish shades), but it's also infused with nourishing vitamin E, tea tree oil, hydrolyzed keratin, and arginine.
Customer Review: "I love how this looks and how long it lasts. So easy, pretty, and low maintenance—that it's the only thing I want on my nails these days! Basically, I have stopped even doing gel manicures in favor of this. I just love the simple, clean look, and I love that I can trust this brand. It does take a minute to dry-but so worth it."
Best Serum: Isdin Si-Nails Strengthening Nail Serum
Pros: Safe for daily use, fast-drying, nail-polish friendly
Cons: Comparatively pricey
Key Ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, pistacia lentiscus gum
Camp recommends this fast-working nail-strengthening serum by Isdin since it's proven to improve nail health over 14 days. "This nail serum contains hyaluronic acid to hydrate the nail and mastic oil to promote nail growth, resulting in increased thickness, density, and durability of the nail and cuticle," he says. The serum is also ideal for anyone on the move since it's fragrance-free, fast-absorbing, and invisible.
Customer Review: "My nails have improved so much and very quickly. My nails have the tendency to be really weak because of a thyroid condition and the use of gel polish, but my nails look much healthier and stronger now that I have been using the Si-Nails brush. I love it. Highly recommend it!"
What to Look For in a Great Nail Strengthener
- Ingredients: Not all nail strengtheners are made the same—some have a list of chemical ingredients that you can't pronounce (which aren't necessarily bad for you, by the way), and others have names like AHAs and vitamin E, which you regularly see in skincare. Make sure your strengthener of choice has ingredients that not only harden the nail like a gel, but offer restorative properties.
- Flexible reinforcement: As Charloff pointed out before, your nails shouldn't be overly hard, or you run the risk of breaking or snapping them. This is a state often achieved with harmful ingredients, like formaldehyde or formaldehyde-releasing ingredients, which create a "very noticeable hardening effect," according to the expert. Your strengthener should offer extra protection without forming a plasticky shield.
- Extra benefits: It's 2026, so naturally, we're asking for more of our products. Modern-day strengtheners don't just fortify the nail plate but also come in chic finishes like the Manucurist Active Shine Nail Strengthener Polish or have impressive fast-drying abilities like the Static Nails Instant Strength Nail Hardener.
How do you use nail strengthener?
"Before applying a nail strengthener, the nail plate should be clean, dry, and free of oils," says Slynko. "Any previous coating should be completely removed. It’s also important to gently shape the nails and smooth any peeling areas along the free edge without overfiling the natural nail plate," she adds.
When it comes to applying your nail strengthener, less is more. It's important to follow directions when using these products and to observe how your skin and nails respond to product application. "Overuse of nail strengtheners can cause the opposite of the desired effect by causing dryness or irritation of the surrounding skin," Camp explains. While some of these products may have a gentle enough formula to be used daily, others may only require biweekly use—and you shouldn't advance past that.
Don't forget about aftercare, too. Slynko recommends using cuticle oil regularly to moisturize and fortify the skin and nails as a whole. "The strengthener provides additional protection for the nail plate, while cuticle oil helps keep the nail area conditioned and well maintained," she explains.
Do nail strengtheners actually work?
If you were wondering if nail strengtheners perform miracles, the answer is no. However, when implemented regularly (and as the instructions recommend) and paired with a healthy diet, they are monumentally helpful. "A nail strengthener can help reinforce the nail, reduce peeling and splitting, and provide a protective layer that allows the natural nail to grow with less breakage—but it can’t fundamentally change the nail you are genetically predisposed to have, and it won’t correct every underlying reason someone may have weak or brittle nails," says Charloff.
Camp also reminds me that our nails have a slower growth cycle than you may think. "It can take three to six months for your fingernails to grow out," says Camp. Yes, this is even with the use of a strengthener. So be diligent, but most importantly, be patient.
