Want "Angel" Skin? This Often-Overlooked Makeup Product Is a Tulle Veil for Every Complexion
Celebrity MUAs swear by it.
We’ve been living in the age of glowing, "glass skin" for quite some time. So many makeup products are infused with radiance-boosting skincare (hey, we’re not complaining!), and 2016-esque highlighters are even starting to bubble back to the surface. But in the Icarus flight towards sunlit skin, it can be easy to forget a very necessary step that makes your makeup last three times as long and makes your skin look, we kid you not, "angelic." That, dear reader, is translucent powder.
“Translucent powder is a finely milled, pigment-free powder used to set makeup and keep it from creasing and transferring,” explains celebrity makeup artist and Who What Wear editor in residence Tasha Reiko Brown. The MUA explains that by applying this invisible powder over cream and liquid products—like foundation, concealer, etc.—you’re essentially sealing your look in place for hours-long perfection. “The end effect is slightly blurring and soft-focus,” she adds. Just a touch to the center of the face and a light sweep under the eyes (if you’re wearing concealer) is all you need.
If your mind immediately goes back to the overly matte skin days of the King Kylie era, fear not. Translucent powders, in both the loose setting and pressed varieties, have come a long way in the last decade. After much testing and expert advice, we found the 10 best translucent powders on the market in 2025. Below, the only powders you’ll need for bridal-level angelic skin.
The Best Translucent Powders, at a Glance
- Best Overall: Laura Mercier Ultra-Blur Translucent Loose Setting Powder
- Best Budget: Airspun Loose Powder Translucent
- Best Drugstore: L'Oréal Paris Infallible Blur-fection Longwear Loose Setting Powder
- Best Pore-Blurring: Hourglass Veil Translucent Setting Powder
- Best for Oily Skin: One/Size Ultimate Blurring Setting Powder
Best Overall: Laura Mercier Ultra-Blur Translucent Loose Setting Powder
Pros: Shade-inclusive, pore-blurring, no photo flashback
Cons: Has a slight sheen
Size: 0.7 oz. | Formula: Loose powder | Shades: 3 | Finish: Natural, matte | Talc-free: Yes
When you think of translucent powders, setting powders, or anything of the sort, your mind likely beelines to Laura Mercier. The talc-free, upgraded version of the brand’s OG formula keeps all of the things that made it famous: a featherlight consistency, makeup-extending magic, and total shine control, just without the harmful ingredients and overly matte effect. This dimensional, natural-finish powder takes your look—regardless of skill—to pro level with just a few sweeps. Almost every member of our beauty team (and Brown!) recommends Laura Mercier’s translucent powder for its marble-smooth results, even on those with uneven texture and fine lines.
It comes in three translucent shades to disappear into a wider range of skin tones (because fair, near-white powders simply do not work on deeper skin), which Brown looks for in a good finishing powder. “I tend to reach for brands that have two to three options within their translucent powder range to ensure complete invisibility,” she states. The one thing shoppers disagree on is its micro-pearl pigments—some feel it looks glittery rather than glowy—though we find that the formula looks like a “healthy matte” versus the two-dimensional results of yore.
Customer review: “The BEST setting powder out there!! Blurring, smooth, and not cakey whatsoever. Worth every penny and one of my holy grails.”
Best Budget: Airspun Loose Powder Translucent
Pros: Low price, ultra-light, absorbs oil
Cons: Small shade range, fragranced
Size: 1.2 oz. | Formula: Loose powder | Shades: 4 | Finish: Matte | Talc-free: Yes
Long revered as one of the best loose face powders, Airspun's lightweight, texture-smoothing translucent dust competes at the same level as the higher-end brands—just at a fraction of the price. The now talc-free formula smooths your skin while locking your makeup in place for shine-controlled, all-day wear, while only setting you back a mere $7. However, we will note that while the product comes in a few different translucent variants, it could use a few more shade options for invisible wear on deeper skin tones.
Customer review: "This powder has been around for years, and now I understand why. The Airspun Loose Face Powder sets my makeup beautifully and keeps shine under control all day. It feels lightweight on the skin and gives a smooth, soft finish without looking cakey. A little goes a long way, so the container lasts forever, making it a great value for the price. It does have a noticeable fragrance, but it fades quickly and hasn’t caused any irritation on my skin. Overall, a classic product that delivers great results at an affordable price. Highly recommend!"
Best Drugstore: L'Oréal Paris Infallible Blur-fection Longwear Loose Setting Powder
Pros: Blurs pores and texture, sets makeup, brightens face
Cons: Small amount of formula for the price
Size: 0.21 oz. | Formula: Loose powder | Shades: 4 | Finish: Matte | Talc-free: Yes
Who What Wear beauty director Erin Jahns wastes no time before recommending this drugstore powder to me. It comes in a variety of “translucent” shades to fit a range of skin tones, and it possesses total blurring powders thanks to a makeup of smoothing, brightening, and shine-controlling pigments. Best of all? You can pick it up at your local drugstore for less than $15 (when you shop right now—it’s currently on sale at Amazon).
Customer review: “This is a very special setting powder! If you want your pores and any texture to disappear like magic, buy this! It is brightening, smoothing, long-lasting, not drying, talc free and very light. A little goes a long way and it works best with a puff as opposed to a brush. The first application is shocking, I never expected the results to be so dramatic.”
Best Pore-Blurring: Hourglass Veil Translucent Setting Powder
Pros: Long-wearing, smooths texture, conceals pores
Cons: Expensive for size
Size: 0.36 oz. | Formula: Loose powder | Shades: 3 | Finish: Natural | Talc-free: Yes
Brown lists this beloved translucent powder as another recommendation for long-wearing, flawless makeup. The formula comes in three translucent shades to service a wider range of skin tones, and it’s exceptionally great for concealing enlarged pores and fine lines. Its light-reflecting, airy powders ofter a soft-focus effect that makes your skin look like it’s wearing an IRL filter, and you can rest assured that it won’t settle into wrinkles. Plus, it has a natural finish for that dimensional your-skin-but-better effect.
Customer review: “Used this powder today after covering a pimple with concealer and my acne all but disappeared. To top it off, I had two strangers compliment my skin today! One woman told me I looked ‘poreless’ and I know I have this powder to thank! Love!”
Best for Dry Skin: Saie Slip Tint Undetectable Baked Setting Powder
Pros: Includes hydrating ingredients, smooths pores, sets makeup
Cons: None we can think of
Size: 0.24 oz. | Formula: Pressed powder | Shades: 5 | Finish: Natural | Talc-free: Yes
Jahns is a fan of this translucent powder for its no-mess application and supremely pretty results. The talc-free formula comes in a pressed (or “baked”) powder form and imparts a natural finish, which makes application easy and fuss-free. Its blurring formula is also packed with hydrating ingredients that work wonders on dry skin—a cocktail of hyaluronic acid, squalane, and jojoba esters baked into the creamy powder to leave a velvety, skin-like finish. If you ever thought your skin was too dry for powders, think again.
Customer review: “I’ve been using this pressed powder and I’m seriously loving it. It gives me a natural finish without looking cakey. My skin still looks glowy—like a soft, healthy glow, but not glittery or shimmery at all. It just looks like my skin, but better. I use it to set my makeup and it blends so nicely. Doesn’t feel heavy, and makes everything look smoother.”
Best for Oily Skin: One/Size Ultimate Blurring Setting Powder
Pros: Controls oil, smooths texture, wide shade variety, very long-wearing
Cons: Contains talc (though asbestos-free)
Size: 1.2 oz. | Formula: Loose powder | Shades: 8 | Finish: Matte | Talc-free: No
If you’re someone who leans oily or wants to smooth skin texture (think: blemishes, fine lines, etc.), then this is the one to add to your cart. One/Size’s ultra-blurring loose powder comes in a large variety of shades, and its translucent option is surprisingly flexible—suiting fair to medium-deep skin, but having a variety of other shades that become translucent on very deep skin tones. The microspheres and focus powders absorb oil and keep shiny skin mattified for extended makeup wear (24-hour shine control!) while smoothing over every crevice, line, and blemish like a real-life filter.
Customer review: “This powder is amazing. I usually get super oily or my under eyes crease badly but after using this powder (I got a mini to try) I absolutely loved it. It helps keep my under eye matted. And I haven’t had to touch up at all. I put this makeup on at 11:30 in the morning. It’s currently 5.00. I would’ve been super oily around my nose and I’m not. I definitely will be getting the bigger size of this!”
Best Shade Range: Chanel Natural Finish Loose Powder On-The-Go
Pros: Diverse shade range, barely there feel, very blurring
Cons: Expensive, small amount of product
Size: 0.21 oz. | Formula: Loose powder | Shades: 10 | Finish: Natural | Talc-free: Yes
“Not all translucent powders are created equal,” muses Brown. “In theory, [translucent powder] has no pigment, but I’ve seen [it] leave a grey cast on deep skin tones or smudge down with yellowing of super fair complexions.” Because of this, Brown emphasizes the importance of lines with different iterations of “translucent” available (rather than just the white powder), which is why she chooses Chanel’s On-The-Go loose powder as a favorite. It comes in 10 flexible shades that fit a large variety of skin tones and feels like a dream on the skin—undetectable to the touch and the eye, but skin-blurring and makeup-preserving all the same.
Customer review: “Perfect consistency—very light and takes the shine away.”
Best Radiant Finish: Saie Airset Radiant Loose Setting Powder
Pros: Hydrating formula, skincare-infused, offers radiance while controlling oil
Cons: Shoppers complain that it’s hard to get the product out
Size: 0.14 oz. | Formula: Loose powder | Shades: 3 | Finish: Radiant | Talc-free: Yes
If matte finishes still feel dated to you, you may prefer this radiance-boosting powder from Saie that comes recommended by Brown. Though that sentence sounds like a contradiction, you’d be surprised by the natural glow-giving power of this finely milled powder. Enhanced with a proprietary blend of mican and aerated-cream technology, this featherlight formula gives the skin a dimensional, natural finish that controls shine without mattifying the skin. Plus, it’s infused with plant-derived squalane for extra hydration and plumpness, making this a godsend for the matte-averse and dehydrated.
Customer review: “I love this setting powder!! My makeup never looks cakey, just beautiful and radiant! It mattifies the oily areas of my skin without looking too dry or dull. Will continue purchasing this!”
Best Color-Correcting: Kosas Cloud Set Loose Translucent Powder
Pros: Versatile formula, non-drying, blurs pores
Cons: Honestly, no complaints
Size: 0.7 oz. | Formula: Loose powder | Shades: 4 | Finish: Natural | Talc-free: Yes
We know the term “color correction” goes directly against the idea of translucence, but hear us out. Each powder, engineered to look invisible on different skin types, has tinted particles that look intense in the jar and undetectable on the skin. With four flexible options that work on fair to very deep skin tones, these color-correcting powders even the skin tone while also blurring any texture imperfections—smoothing over blemishes, fine lines, pores, and more. If you experience dark spots or dullness, this is the one to try.
Customer review: “I have sensitive acne-prone skin. I have to be very careful with powders. After 3 weeks of wear, I am very impressed with it ability to control my oily skin even after 8 hours of wear. Have not broken out.”
Best Investment: Westman Atelier Vital Pressed Skincare Powder
Pros: Skincare-infused, improves skin texture, controls shine
Cons: Undeniably pricey, small amount of product
Size: 0.17 oz. | Formula: Pressed powder | Shades: 5 | Finish: Natural | Talc-free: Yes
Don’t get mad; we know this one’s expensive. But if you feel like splurging on a powder that won’t just make your skin look as smooth as your first day on Earth, but also has the skincare actives of your favorite serum, we urge you to turn your attention towards Westman Atelier. Available in five flexible shades and packed with the brand’s own skin-shielding complex—an expensive blend of protective antioxidants, proteins, and minerals that fight against free radicals, blue light, and environmental stressors—this powder truly has it going on. Each swipe of your brush imparts a pore-sealing smoothness that controls shine and improves your skin texture, which means your skin will actually feel as good as it looks. Worth the spend, IMO.
Customer review: “While my favorite is still the pink brightening powder, this is still the highest quality powder available. It is ultra fine, does not ever settle in fine lines and even sits nicely over textured skin. I am older with very dry and somewhat textured skin but I can still use these powders to give a nice finished look. These work beautifully over the tinted serum foundation for a flawless look.”
What to Look For in Translucent Powder
- Formula: While most translucent powders are available in loose powder form, some are pressed (or baked), which some users may find easier to apply. Loose powders, like the Laura Mercier Ultra-Blur, are versatile and can be used to simply set cream products or packed on with a sponge to “bake” your makeup. However, if you only want to set your makeup and skip the messy fallout, you should opt for a pressed version like the Saie Slip Tint.
- Finish: Powder isn’t necessarily synonymous with mattness anymore. While you certainly can find matte finishes if that’s your desires look (One/Size’s Ultimate Blurring Setting Powder delivers fabulous shine control), you can also find a bevy of natural-finish translucent powders that look like real skin (the Chanel Natural Finish Loose Powder is great for this), or you can go the radiant route and embrace the glow with something like Saie Airset.
- Longevity: Depending on how long your days are (or how indestructible you want your makeup to be), the hours of longevity your powder can provide are worth looking into. For example, some very matte products (like the One/Size pick) can make your makeup last up to 24 hours, whereas more natural powders might preserve your look for half of that time.
What is translucent powder used for?
Translucent powder can be used for many different purposes: setting your skin, baking your undereyes, or blending your makeup more smoothly together. For instance, if you feel you’ve applied your bronzer or blush a bit too harshly, you can swirl a fluffy brush in translucent powder and swipe it over the area to marry your products together.
What’s the difference between translucent powder and setting powder?
These terms are often used interchangeably because they’re often one and the same—take the Hourglass Veil Translucent Setting Powder, for example. However, Brown says that there are a few key differences that separate them at the end of the day. “Setting powder typically has a slight pigment payoff and can be used to brighten or to add another sheer layer of coverage to the face,” explains Brown. “Setting powders tend to be oil-absorbing, while translucent powder has a sheer, blurring, soft-focus effect. Translucent powders are pigment-free in theory [and] add no color, just the texture payoff of a smoothing mattifying effect.”
Brown explains that she rarely uses setting powders because “there can be a learning curve” to these pigments, especially when you’re trying to get a skin tone match. “Translucent powders are a go-to for me over setting powders,” she adds. “Setting powders are what I would recommend to someone who needs very full coverage.”
What does translucent powder do for mature skin?
“Mature skin shouldn’t be left out of any beauty conversation or product choice, and translucent powder is no different,” says Brown. “There’s no product mature skin can’t use, you just have to be mindful of technique.”
Brown recommends using translucent powder to set any face makeup with coverage, like foundations and concealers, on mature skin. “Knowing all powders can settle in fine lines, I choose to dust on [the powder] with a loosely bristled fluffy brush to make sure powder is lightly and evenly dispersed and ‘dusted’ on instead of using a compact brush, which can add powder to face too densely.” If you apply the product with too stiff of a brush, it can enhance fine lines and dry out the skin.
How We Chose
We chose the best translucent powders of 2025 by researching the current top performers, taking into consideration both products new and old, before trying a handful ourselves. After analyzing our own collections and finding some new favorites, we asked a celebrity makeup artist for personal recommendations for no-flashback formulas after years of glamming her star clientele for the red carpet. Then, we compiled this shopping guide to make your product search ten times easier.
