Faux Freckles Are Everywhere, But These Are the Only Pens That Make Them Look Incredibly Natural
And they're all under $30.
In case you didn't know, faux freckles are everywhere these days. There was a time where covering freckles was almost a guaranteed part of doing makeup since foundation or concealer would typically cover them up. As someone with natural freckles, I typically would stay away from those high-coverage options in order to let them show through.
Now though, we have freckle pens to add and enhance them. They're incredibly easy to use, and the majority of them are relatively affordable. Still, it's safe to say that some are more worthy of your hard-earned dollars than others, especially since you don't want fake freckles that smudge or disappear after a few hours.
To get the full scoop on which formulas are must-buys, I chatted with award-winning celebrity makeup artist Catrina Breitweiser for her top picks. Read on for all the details!
The Best Faux Freckle Pens, at a Glance
- Best Overall: ColourPop Freckle Pen
- Best Splurge: Freck Beauty The Original Freckle
- Best Designer Label: Jason Wu Beauty The Freckled Boy
- Best Budget: Sheglam Freck Please Freckle Tint
The Best Freckle Pens of 2026
Best Overall: ColourPop Freckle Pen
Our best overall pick goes to this freckle pen from ColourPop for its price point, pigment, and long-wear formula. "This is a great affordable option that performs beautifully," says Breitweiser. "The tip is precise and the tones lean natural, not too red or muddy. I especially like this for clients who want soft, sun-kissed freckles without committing to a super bold look."
Pros: Looks natural, contains aloe vera
Cons: Some users don't like the smell
Shades: 1
Customer review: "I was hesitant that these would look too grey, but they actually come out quite nice. Brush tip is just the right thickness to control for small, subtle freckles and building out larger freckles. I tried a few 'dupes' and found I liked the pen tip and colour of this one the best."
Best Splurge: Freck Beauty The Original Freckle
If you're willing to spend a little extra, consider this easy-toa-apply pick from Freck Beauty. The brand was one of few that helped turn faux freckles into a must-have. "I love the ultra-fine brush tip because it gives you realistic, skin-like dots instead of harsh stamps," says Breitweiser. "The formula is sheer and buildable, which is key because freckles should look layered and organic, not flat or overly pigmented."
Pros: Easy to blend
Cons: May need retouches
Shades: 2
Customer review: "I love the color of these freckles. It looks really natural, not fake, and it blends well. They stay on for pretty long. Will be restocking!"
Best Designer Label: Jason Wu Beauty The Freckled Boy
In case you didn't know, Jason Wu doesn't just do fashion. He also has a thriving beauty line that delivers in the faux freckles category. "This pen gives the most believable “second-skin” freckles," says Breitweiser. "The shade range is thoughtfully done, and the formula diffuses beautifully when pressed into the skin. It’s perfect for that effortless, off-duty model vibe."
Pros: contains rose water
Cons: Product runs out fast
Shades: 1
Customer review: "I was sooo pleasantly surprised by this! You have to let the spots sit for like 15-20 seconds (like the instructions say) and then tap them in and they look perfect!! "
Best Budget: Sheglam Freck Please Freckle Tint
If you're on a budget but you don't want to sacrifice quality, just know that SheGlam truly gets it right. "This is surprisingly impressive for the price point," says Breitweiser. "It has a slightly watery consistency, which actually helps create that imperfect, natural look." She adds that it’s great for beginners who want to give faux freckles a try for the first time.
Pros: Waterproof
Cons: Applicator can feel hard on skin
Shades: 3
Customer review: "This is by far my favorite freckle makeup! The freckles look real and I get plenty of compliments when I wear it! It has become a daily routine now!!"
What's the best way to apply faux freckles?
In this case, less is always more. "I recommend applying freckles after foundation but before heavy powder," says Breitweiser. "Lightly dot across the bridge of the nose and tops of the cheeks where the sun would naturally hit." And if you want that extra natural finish, make sure to vary the freckles in size and spacing. After the initial application, tap them into your skin with your fingertip or a damp sponge to soften any harsh edges.
How to Make Faux Freckles Last
As I mentioned before, no one wants to apply faux freckles just for them to look dull or smudge just a few hours later. If you want to make them last, Breitweiser recommends "Applying them over slightly tacky skin (like over cream blush or before fully setting with powder) so the pigment grabs," she says. "Once blended, lightly set with a translucent powder , but don’t over-matte the skin, because natural freckles usually have a skin-like finish."
If you plan on using freckles for an all-day look, she suggests using a setting spray and pressing it in with a sponge rather than just spraying it on top. This way your freckles are set without the placement getting messed up.
Other Ways to Achieve Faux Freckles
So maybe you have yet to invest in a freckle pen but you want to get the look ASAP—totally understandable. Luckily, you can also achieve using brow pencils, cream contour, or even matte eyeshadow mixed with setting spray, according to Breitweiser. "For a softer look, I’ve even flicked a stippling brush lightly into diluted self-tanner for ultra-natural, long-lasting freckles, especially on no-makeup summer skin," she says.
