I Don't Own a Bottega Bag, But Wearing This Fragrance Makes Me Feel Like I Do
Bottega Veneta has launched its new Alta collection of fragrances, and each one is as luxurious as the next.
Whilst I might not own a Bottega Veneta bag (yet—a beauty editor can dream, so consider this my manifestation), I can now at least smell like I do. The Italian fashion house has added a new collection, Alta, to its line of perfumes.
When Bottega Veneta's original eau de parfum collection launched back in 2024—inspired by its Venetian heritage, with glass-blown bottles nodding to Venice's artisanal roots, accompanied by their own Italian marble stand—I didn't think they could top it. So when I was invited to preview the new Italian perfumes this summer, I had high hopes. And I don't want to spoil anything, but each and every Alta perfume is as expensive-smelling as the next, and many are amongst my favourite new perfumes I've tried all year.
Alta consists of 10 fragrances and pays homage to the most treasured and recognised Italian ingredients—think Italian stracciatella gelato, or basil picked from a herb garden. Drawing on the concept of Bottega's intrecciato technique of weaving leather, the Italian ingredients are woven with guest ingredients from all around the world, from South Asian oud to North African neroli, pairing together cultures from all four corners of the globe.
The emblematic weaving is also embossed around each of the glass bottles, and is topped with a wooden cap and gold ring, harking back to Venetian architecture and the history of jewellery making. Honestly? It feels like a work of art in itself, and you'll want to treasure the craftsmanship forever on your dressing table. They're also refillable and come in travel-sized vials. But if you can't make it into a boutique to smell them for yourself, fear not. There are two discovery sets: the Alta Mini Set (£290), which houses the most luxe 10ml minis of the Alta bottles, and the Alta Discovery Set (£65), which has 2ml vials that are perfect for finding your favourite before committing to a full-sized bottle.
I've now worn each and every scent over the past two weeks, so I'm sharing my thoughts on the full collection below.

1. Always Now
Key notes: Basil E-oil, bergamot, lemon, green mandarin, sweet orange, ginger, clementine, petitgrain, spearmint, neroli, fig, vetiver bourbon, cedarwood, musk
This smells exactly like plucking fresh basil leaves from an herb garden, or the first zingy sip of an Italian spritz muddled with vibrant herbs. It's a bright, fresh fragrance that feels optimistic and sunny, and was crafted with the notion of staying present in the moment, and it totally comes across. The herby, green fragrance makes it the perfect scent to spritz first thing in the morning for an instant pick-me-up that makes you feel both energised and grounded. It's a perfume I can see myself spritzing on a crisp white shirt during the spring and summer.
2. Montebello
Key notes: Lemon, bergamot, grapefruit, blood orange, neroli, orange blossom, musk, ambrox
This particular fragrance is an ode to Bottega Veneta's atelier in Montebello, which is surrounded by a vista of vibrant orange and pine trees. It's zesty and brimming with uplifting citrusy scents, including Italian lemon, bergamot, grapefruit and blood orange. But it also has a white, creamy floral accent that makes it smooth and almost buttery on the skin, thanks to the addition of orange blossom and neroli. A divine springtime fragrance.
3. Balliano
Key notes: Pomelo, citron, pepper, myrtle, lavender, vitessence, white fig, cedarwood, vetiver, ambronova
Balliamo translates as "let's dance" in Italian, and that joyful spirit carries through this sunny scent. Sparkling citrus dances on the skin with the juicy flesh of white fig on the first spritz, inviting in aromatic lavender and spicy pepper to join the dance, before drying down into a smooth woody base. I can totally envision wearing this on a balmy summer evening on holiday next to a glittery sea at sunset.
4. Bare Morning
Key notes: Pink pepper, apricot seed, Borotalco accord, freesia, sandalwood, musks, cashmeran
This is easily my absolute favourite of the entire collection, and if you're a fan of skin scents, then you'll probably adore it too. It draws inspiration from Borotalco, an Italian personal care brand known for its talcum powder and vintage, powdery scent. And it's stunning. Imagine stepping out of your shower, dusting your skin with the Italian powder and slipping on your cosiest, fluffiest white dressing gown. It's clean-smelling, creamy and powdery, and I want to douse my entire skin in the scent.
5. Slow Rise
Key notes: Bergamot, mandarin, pink peppercorn, green mandarin, clary sage, lavender, rose, orris butter, geranium
If you love rose perfumes, then take note of this one to smell. As the name suggests, this one slowly unfurls on the skin. At first, you're met with the zesty burst of bergamot and zingy mandarin. Then, much like how buds bloom under the rising sun, the rose petals reveal themselves on your skin as the day continues. It's a spicy and fresh aromatic rose, which makes you feel like you've stepped into an Italian rose garden that's filled with verdant, green scents too.
6. Ricordami
Key notes: Rum, paradisone, ambrox, patchouli, dreamwood, stracciatella, vanilla, helvetolide, muscenone, oak, olibanum
Gourmand lovers, this one is for you. And even if you're not a fan of vanilla perfumes, I'd urge you to try this expensive-smelling take. If Bottega Veneta had a gelato shop, this order would be a scoop of rum and raisin and a scoop of stracciatella. It's warm and resinous, and subtly sweet and creamy with the vanilla and swirls of chocolate ribboned through. I already know this will be my go-to autumn perfume when I want a warming, sweet perfume that clings to my knitwear.
7. Moment After
Key notes: Bergamot, cardamom, pink pepper, mate, orcanox, nappa leather, tonka bean, vanilla bourbon, vanilla absolute
This is what I'd imagine the thrill of unboxing a new Bottega Veneta bag would be like, with soft, supple leather gently unfurling as you take it out from the dust bag for the first time. I'm not usually one for leathery fragrances, but even I find this one intriguing. Rather than being heady or smothering, the buttery soft leather becomes one with the skin, with a soft vanilla trail that clings close.
8. Night Sounds
Key notes: Pink pepper, saffron, mugane, fir balsam, cedarwood, sublimolide, cyprioll, amber
The rich, amber hue of the fragrance tells you exactly how this one smells. Smouldering and resinous, this is a fragrance inspired by the mystery of nightfall and the moon, and it quite literally glows on the skin. It's ambery, fiery and spicy, like sipping the caramel warmth of an aged spirit. I can totally envision wearing this fragrance with a dark velvet suit.
9. Velvet Steps
Key notes: Olibanum, labdanum, plum, myrrh, ylang ylang, cypriol, ambrocenide, cistus, musk
This one is unlike anything else I've tried. It's inspired by fleeting moments of intimacy. To my nose, it's almost medicinal (like a beautiful bottle you might find in an Italian apothecary) but with plush purple velvet and syrupy plum entwined through it. It's strong, but it doesn't command the room in a brash fashion. Instead, it stays close to the skin and can be enjoyed by those closest to you.
10. Crepuscolo
Key notes: Bergamot, cardamom, incense, sea salt, cypress, figolide, gurjum balsam, mugane, oud butter, cedarwood, labdanum, cypriol Essence, fir balsam, patchouli, vetiver bourbon
Last, but certainly not least, we have Crepuscolo. I'm not usually drawn to oud perfumes, and if I were to go off the notes alone, I'd probably pass on it. But after smelling this, I'm eating my words. Crepuscolo means “twilight” in Italian, and this scent is inspired by dusk falling over the shimmering sea. It has a stunning saltiness to it that makes it feel breezy and aquatic, and combined with the depth of buttery oud, it really captures the feeling of light and dark together.
