17 Cozy, Woodsy Scents That Make Me Want to Pull on a Cardigan and Curl Up by the Fire
This cozy fragrance note is second to none.

No matter what time of year it is, I find myself gravitating towards woodsy scents to remind me of home. Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, I spent the majority of my childhood years in the company of the great maples, firs, pines, and cedars (Washington's isn't called the evergreen state for nothing) that would form the most stunning canopy overhead. While their jaw dropping height and heavy boughs always made my heart skip a beat, it's always been the slivers of golden light on the forest floor, plus a resinous, green, and earthy scent that made me feel the most at home in their presence.
It wasn't until I relocated to Los Angeles for college, and later New York City for a year-long stint, that I discovered just how much I appreciated the uniquely woody qualities of my home state. Now, don't get me wrong—I'm the last person that would be willingly hike across mountains or spent days camping at their base, but I do love an addictive fragrance that reminds me of the environment I grew up in. Overtime, I've pulled together a collection of woody fragrances that harken back to the great outdoors in the most timeless, cozy ways, and I'm sharing them below.
What Are Woody Perfumes?
As the name suggests, scents that fall under the umbrella of this fragrance family are characterizes by the presence of notes derived from wood materials such as trees, roots and resins as well as leaves, grasses, and moss with earthy qualities. Usually rich and warm, woody fragrances commonly feature aromatic, citrus or floral top notes that adds a weightlessness to the earthy notes (material that comes from plant life where patchouli, oakmoss, and vetiver essential oils are drawn from).
Closely imitating the all-natural olfactory experience of the earth around us, these fragrances can be grounding, calming, and familiar. Since woody perfumes smell like the natural wood or earth material, they also tend to be a popular pick for autumn and winter. Autumn is ruled by the woodlands, with a stunning color palette of amber and gold and the faint scent of earth and smoke carried on the air. We associate the coming of this season with the smaller comforts of life as the temperature takes a dip and watch in awe as the world around us changes.
Similarly, winter is marked by long days, the cold, and the smells of the earth. Tree boughs are now without their leaves, the ground is frozen, and the world around us once undergoes a transformation under a blanket of white. We spend most of our days inside, craving the warmth it provides us and reveling in the opportunity to partake in a slower lifestyle. Woody perfumes are a reflection of all of these lived experiences, and a single spritz of one scent can transport its wearers right back to cozy, cool days.
Are Woody Perfumes Ideal for Layering?
There's no 'one way' to layer your fragrances, but there are definitely smart ways to elevate and subdue their notes by pairing them with a selection of complementary scents. Just like any other perfume, it's all in smart pairing and getting the most you can out of its wear time and siliage (i.e. the scent trail that a perfume leaves behind as it evaporates). If there are particular notes you'd like to maximize or underscore with others, you can create unique scent compositions that can change with the seasons or be worn year-round. Take a look below at which woody scents have scored a permanent spot in my fragrance lineup.

Scent Type: Spicy woods
Notes: ambergris, papyrus, cedar, amyris, clove, cardamom, amber resin, musk, sandalwood
I've already written a love letter to Ranger Station fragrances, and I'm still as obsessed with Santalum now as I was then. A modern take on sandalwood, this perfume opens with crisp and subtly green papyrus against ambergris before unfolding into a resinous blend of cedar and creamy amyris. A blend of warm spices sets the entire fragrance alight before finally revealing sheer musk and sandalwood at its base.
Customer Review: "Ever since I visited Nashville, I’ve been completely head over heels for this scent! It’s the perfect blend that strikes just the right balance—not too overpowering, but still incredibly luxurious and indulgent. I can’t get enough of it! The endless compliments I receive are simply astounding! It's like carrying a little piece of Nashville magic with me everywhere I go"
Scent Type: Earthy woods
Notes: Sandalwood, cedarwood, vetiver, nutmeg, cinnamon, amber wood
Whenever I think of woodsy fragrances, cinnamon is one of the scent notes I can never get enough of once fall and winter roll around. No.04 Boise de Balincourt by Maison Louis Marie gives my favorite fall semi-seasonal note a twist with a well-balanced dash of nutmeg and vetiver for a deliciously mysterious touch. It also has sandalwood and amber wood, which keeps the scent grounded without detracting from its softness.
Customer Review: "Maison Louis Marie No.04 Bois de Balincourt is a fragrance for dreamers and adventurers. It's perfect for anyone who wants to carry a piece of the forest with them, no matter where they go. If you're a fan of woody, warm, and slightly spicy scents, this one is worth adding to your collection."
Scent Type: Floral woods
Notes: violet leaf, neroli, petitgrain, freesia, jasmine, vanilla, coco musk, sandalwood
In a notable departure from the majority of the fragrances included in this edit, Queens & Monsters Eau de Parfum offers a woods with a floral touch. Opening with powdery, fresh violet leaf with neroli and petitgrain, the perfume unfurls to reveal more florals at its heart (jasmine and freesia). Upon dry down, the scent could almost be described as being an "earthy gourmand" with a combination of vanilla, coco musk, and sandalwood. TBH, it wears beautifully year-round, but it's the ideal transitional pick from summer to fall for me.
Customer Review: "This is a really lovely sandalwood vanilla scent mostly, with some green touches towards the beginning of wearing it. This is a quality scent that I think is really easy to wear each season, but I think this is stunning in spring and summer especially!"
Scent Type: Aromatic woods
Notes: Hinoki cypress, forest leaves, incense, spices, Japanese cedar, sandalwood
I discovered d'Annam's Hinoki Meditation while hunting for a woody scent that combined Hinoki cypress with cool spices. This perfume met and far exceeded all my expectations by also offering smoky incense, forest leaves, and a blend of cool spices against a sandalwood background. According to the brand, the inspiration was a dreamy poem detailing the movement of clouds above mountaintop pines, which I sense every time I wear it.
Customer Review: "A meditative and spa like wood scent with warmly sweet spices and wispy incense. Very Hinoki forward, with the opening being predominately Hinoki woods paired with warm and balmy spices. The incense comes out as the scent develops in a very warmly smoky and subtle way. A beautifully tranquil take on woods."
Scent Type: Citrus woods
Notes: Fresh citrus, nutmeg, sunset rose accord, vintage armoire wood, musks, lived-in linens
If you're not feeling particularly woodsy, but love scents that counter wood notes with light and romantic touches, give Thin Wild Mercury's Chateau, 1970 a try. Inspired by the end of an era (the late 1960s shifting into a new decade), this scent is altogether fresh and warm with notes of watery citrus and nutmeg that shifts into a quiet rose accord. Next, we're greeted by vintage armoire wood (i.e. wood that's been aged and treated) with a flutter of soft, lived-in linens. It's bottle, too, recalls images of a vintage hotel with a hand-drawn service bell.
Customer Review: "I liked this when I first smelled it and definitely got the roses and vintage armoire wood and linens and then didn't think much of it. But in going through my travel sprayer i've fallen in love with it more and more with each wear. It's comforting in a way that makes me feel confident and glamorous and feminine in the specific way I love to be. It makes me feel like a 1960's femme getting ready to meet my butch lover at a hotel bar mid day, knowing i'm gonna be greeted with a small bundle of pink roses and the smell of a sun-warmed linen shirt when they arrive.
Scent Type: Amber woods
Notes: Atlas cedar, frankincense, Sichuan pepper, clary sage, juniper, tonka bean, Canadian balsam, labdanum, patchouli, sandalwood, styrax
I didn't grow up around smudge sticks, but I've always been fascinated by how quickly I feel comforted by their cleansing properties and warm-yet-earthy scent. This Heretic Parfum fragrance captures the experience of being in a work during a smudging ritual with notes of grounding Atlas cedar, glowing frankincense, spicy Sichuan pepper, and clary sage combined with florals, herbs, and woods. There's nothing I love more than a fragrance that can transport me anywhere, and Smudge does the trick with every spritz.
Customer Review: "I definitely get the witchy vibes intended, but to me it’s in the form of a strong desert atmosphere. It’s bone dry and bold, it smells like the ghosts of cigars outside an abandoned saloon, a hot desert wind at night around a fire. It’s praying for rain. It’s masculine to me, and it takes me to places I can almost remember visiting. Dries down to smell like incense; much subtler. Would be a delicious summer night fragrance."
Scent Type: Spicy woods
Notes: green hazelnut, cedarwood, roasted oak
I love oak wood floors and furniture, but this find convinced me that it can work in fragrance to. Jo Malone London's English Oak & Hazelnut captures the essence of a cool and crisp fall day with fresh and nutty green hazelnut against dry cedarwood and spicy, roasted oak base. It's one of my favorite wood-heavy fragrances because it works perfectly for the latter half of the year and just as appropriate for spring and summer.
Customer Review: "I love this perfume. It is sharp, clean and wintery, however can be worn on any occasion. I’ve had comments that this smells masculine on me, but I find it unisex personally. It projects well and lasts a good few hours, I get compliments on it. Smells like a walk in a crisp forest in December."
Scent Type: Spicy woods
Notes: Pomegranate, patchouli, Casablanca lily, guaiacwood
Unlike the brand's dry and crisp Englis Oak and Hazelnut, this perfume leans into the sweet, juicy side of fall that's reminiscent of the season's harvest. Spiked with notes of raspberry and plum, this fragrance blends ruby-rich pomegranate with honeyed Casablanca lily, earthy patchouli, and warm guaiacwood. When I wear it, I'm reminded of the fruity's symbolism and role in Greek mythology (Persephone being trapped in the Underworld after eating six pomegranate seeds).
Customer Review: "Pomegranate Noir lives up to its name: fruity, but with a darker edge. It opens with a burst of spiced woods and dark fruits, as if ripe plums and ruby-red pomegranates had been steeped in black pepper. The fruit here is rich, almost syrupy, with a shadowy undertone. You’ll find warmth from the spices, depth from the woods. But make no mistake—Pomegranate Noir remains a gentle composition, but one with a hidden bite."
Scent Type: Aromatic woods
Notes: Cypress, frankincense, vetiver
Aesop has some heavy hitters when it comes to woody perfumes, and their Hwyl Eau de Parfum shouldn't be skipped. Reminiscent of a Hinoki forest, this fragrance balances smoky notes with a subtle spice and dark green, earthy accords using an intriguing combination of cypress, frankincense, and vetiver. It wears nicely on the skin for hours at a time (with impressive projection and sillage), and because of its complex woody, earthy, and herbal notes, this one is a must for fall and winter.
Customer Review: "This is such an authentic smell. Reminds me of our summer cabins here in Finland: smoke, earthy and woody. Such a calming and grounding perfume. I'd wear this mostly at home when I wanna relax and enjoy calmness."
Scent Type: Gourmand woods
Notes: Juniper berry root, angelica root, bitter orange, Italian bergamot, French clary, pink peppercorn, pepper wood, black currant buds absolute, iris absolute, oak wood extract, cedar wood, cypriol, Haitian vetiver, amber
I haven no idea what the "architects club" is, but all I know is that I want in and this perfume gives me entry. Inspired by 1930's London, this fragrance offers a is a comforting, smoky vanilla scent that opens with cool gin and closes with an amber woody base. Wearing it transports me to a members-only lounge surrounded by ancient antiques, leather-bound books, and a secret or two escaping the lips of the biggest names of Mayfair society.
Customer Review: "For me, the woodiness comes through first (esp. cedar) and then vanilla sweetness comes in. I enjoy smelling this on myself throughout the day. Warm and cozy fall and winter vibes. There is a subtle sweetness. I can layer it with other vanilla-forward perfumes."
Scent Type: Aromatic woods
Notes: Caramelized bergamot, antique wood, cognac essence, concrete of orris, tonka, limousine oak
With all this talk of fresh wood, I would be doing my job if I didn't sprinkle in an antique wood fragrance here and there. D.S. & Durga's Cognac Reign Eau de Parfum is one of the top ones of my list year-round (especially when I'm in the mood to embrace my inner dark academic) with a savory scent profile of sticky, sweet caramelized bergamot balanced by antique wood and cognac essence. The fragrance closes with waxy, sweet orris concrete blasted by tonka and limousine oak.
Customer Review: "I’ve never encountered such a distinctive take on bergamot. The caramelized note greets you warmly, opening the door to the rest of the fragrance. A touch of aged dust mingles with boozy cognac, while orris ties everything together with a vintage ribbon. It’s the ballroom of an aristocrat’s palace. Powdered wigs bopping around and footsteps echoing across varnished parquet floors."
Scent Type: Aromatic woods
Notes: Radiant wood, copper, cedar, sandalwood, radiant orris, boronia, balsam fir absolute, coconut musk, ambergris
Oh, how I love this one! Radio Bombay was one of my first introductions to D.S. & Durga's stunning lines of somewhat niche fragrances compositions, this perfume still stands apart from the rest. According to brand founder and perfumer David Seth Moltz (A.K.A. the 'D.S.' in D.S. & Durga), this perfume is a deconstruction of the oils in India's Mysore santal with the heat. It's electric, playful, and effortlessly cool with radian wood, whispers of copper, sandalwood, balsam fir absolute, and coconut musk.
Customer Review: "This smells exactly like a fresh coconut and it’s kind of amazing that they captured that. I feel like a lot of coconut scents lean super sweet and tropical or gourmand, but I prefer this way more. I love how woody it is, it’s very simple but well executed."
Scent Type: Aromatic woods
Notes: Rose petals, Virginian cedarwood, silk musk, Haitain vetiver
We've finally arrived at one of most recognizable cedarwood fragrances of the 21st century. Byredo's Super Cedar strikes the delicate balance between mysterious and timeless with a modern, sharp blend of delicate rose petals, Virginian cedarwood, silk musk, and Haitian vetiver. Reminiscent of pencil shavings, Byredo shares it also evokes nostalgia of school days. While Idon't pick up on the pencil shavings as much when I smell this on paper, but it's present on skin.
Customer Review: "One of the few fragrances I discovered after asking a stranger on the train what he was wearing. It was a super hot summer day and he smelled just amazingly fresh and clean. Light and woody, a bit musky. Like a freshly sharpened pencil, combined with a balmy summer breeze."
Scent Type: Spicy woods
Notes: Cardamom, black pepper, oud, olibanum resin, ambergris, white musk
Need a more edgy take on a woody fragrance? Get your hands on Régime des Fleurs' Oud Dukhan Eau de Parfum. Undeniably spicy, smoky, and salty, this is a magnetic oud scent that's bold and complex. It opens with notes of cardamom and black pepper, two cool spices that elevate the smokiness of the oud and olibanum resin. Then with wear, we're greeted by ambergris and white musk for an earthy touch.
Customer Review: "Brutalist and stoic. A cold, mid-winter morning when the world is set in low-contrast hues yet you are obliged to drag your weary soul out of bed in the morning to don your coat and face the world. Tendrils of wood smoke lifting from cold, brick chimneys set against a marbled, slate-grey sky. Spicy and powerful, yet restrained. Unisex, but for the confident among us."
Scent Type: Chypre woods
Notes: Tonka bean, juniper berries, tobacco smoke, cedarwood
I was introduced to this scent last winter at a jazz club Diptyque created in the heart of Manhattan to celebrate it's launch. Wearing Orphéon takes me right back there—smooth jazz, flashing lights, and bodies swinging to and fro in a recreation of what used to be one of Saint-Germain's most beloved jazz clubs of all time. It's an enchanting, woody, aromatic concoction of tonka bean, juniper berries, tobacco smoke, and cedarwood that evokes Paris in the early 1960s.
Customer Review: "Orpheon is a fabulous addition to my collection, and it's like nothing else I own. This earthy beauty reminds me of wandering in a misty forest somewhere close to the ocean. If I could describe coastal British Columbia with a scent, perhaps this would be it. Perfectly unisex with a dry-down that is soft and ever-so-slightly sweet, yet somehow maintains a woody dryness. This sent is comforting, fresh, and appropriate for any setting and any season."
Scent Type: Citrus woods
Notes: Bergamot, mandarin, bitter orange, bee wax, pear granita, guaiac wood, oak, tonka bean, Cabreuva
Put your hand up if your love bee wax and bergamot! The Harmonist's Golden Wood Eau de Parfum is a citrus wood scent that smells like a lazy afternoon in late summer laying in a Mediterranean orange grove. While I initially thought this one would lean more sweet with the addition of bitter orange, mandarin, and bergamot, it's balanced by bee wax and a burst of pear granita. It's base is wear all the woody notes that your heart desires are lurking with guaiac wood, oak, tonka bean, and Cabreuva.
Customer Review: "Mmmm this is wonderful! This is a 'woodified' and much more interesting version than many of the typical and popular citrus/vanilla combo fragrances. The beeswax is not prominent. I get mostly citrus-vanilla but unsweetened a little by the woodiness. Although it is a little soft wearing, it is such a sophisticated gourmand and full bottle worthy!"
Scent Type: Spicy woods
Notes: Cardamom, pimento leaf, tuberose absolute, neroli, woody notes, tonka, oud
Here's a highly contrasted composition with oud and carnal tuberose you can't pass up. Created by perfumer Céline Barel, Maison d'Etto's Cannan Eau de Parfum is inspired by the magic of a suspension of belief, freedom, and passion. While the presence of spicy tuberose absolute and wood notes stood out to me the most when I first smelled this a couple months ago, but wearing it revealed more tonka, oud, and that sneaky pimento leaf that really rounds out the scent.
Customer Review: "The most gorgeous spicy tuberose with a beautiful vetiver-ish powdery dry down. Hard to describe, it is so perfectly blended. Feels very natural but is long lasting and perfect from start to finish. My favourite of the house of Maison d’Etto."
