IMO, Everyone Deserves at Least One of These Timeless Luxury Fragrances in Their Scent Collection
Elegance in a bottle.
Who What Wear beauty editors agree there's one question that tends to come up when people find out what we do for a living, and it's usually "What inspired you to want to write about beauty?" Our answers differ, of course, but our shared interest in beauty is what drives us to test and review products and trends and write about our findings on the internet. We've landed in a career that allows us to tap into those obsessions. And one of my favorite parts of the job is the constant conversations in our group chats about the rare standout product picks.
It's literally our job to be picky about products, but there are certainly some that we can't get enough of. Luxury fragrances are a prime example of a subject that comes up often and leaves each of us with a list of scents to try for the first time or start wearing all over again. Since I can't leak our super-secret Who What Wear beauty editor conversations, I've chosen the second-best option and pulled together an edit of a few of our favorites from brands such as Byredo, Parfums de Marly, and Guerlain. Plus, I tapped Bee Shapiro, the founder of Ellis Brooklyn, for insider intel.
Wondering which fragrances Shapiro finds herself the most drawn to? She favors perfumes that can transport her to a place she can visualize. "Ellis Brooklyn's Miami Nectar Eau de Parfum is obviously Miami. Parfums de Marly's Valaya Eau de Parfum ($250) reminds me of the dreamiest, chicest wedding. Creed's Acqua Fiorentina Eau de Parfum ($310) takes me to Italy in a ruffled cotton dress, bare shoulders, and a scarf in my hair," she says. Byredo
If you're an avid social media user like every single member of Who What Wear's beauty team, there's a high chance you've come across a viral fragrance by this modern luxury European brand. The brand, which was founded in Stockholm by Ben Gorham in 2006, takes a cutting-edge approach to creating timeless scents that will be in our fragrance collections for years to come.
Scent Type: Aromatic woods | Notes: Ambrette, Jasmine nessberry, violet, sandalwood, magnolia, chantilly musk, crisp amber, cedarwood
It's no surprise this classic Byredo fragrance immediately came to Senior Beauty Editor Jamie Schnieder's mind when asked about her favorite signature luxury scent. Mojave Ghost combines ambrette and Jamaican nessberry with notes of violet and cedarwood for a fragrance that's utterly enchanting. It draws from the rare ghost flower's ability to thrive year after year in the Mojave Desert.
Customer Review: "To me, this smells like fresh rain in the desert, cedar, tropical fruits, violets, powder, ambergris, and dusty sunlight. It perfectly evokes the idea of a lonely, yet lovely desert landscape after the baking heat of the day is gone, and all you can smell in the air is the twisted bark of joshua trees. The violet adds a nice sweetness, and magnolia is my absolute favorite floral accord."
Scent Type: Warm and sweet gourmands | Notes: Vanilla, cashmere, ciste, musk
While I'm not usually a fan of gourmand scents, Beauty Editor Kaitlyn McLintock has fully convinced me to get my hands on this one. Vanille Antique is the be-all and end-all of elevated, warm gourmand fragrances with a sweet side. Centered on perfumery's rarest raw ingredient, the perfume leads with smoky vanilla before transitioning into earthy cashmere woods and ends with a daringly sensual musk.
Customer Review: "It is heavenly. It's warm amber and has a boozy sweetness like rum. Immediately transports me to a beautiful ornate old library with dark wood and that delicious smell of dusty old books. A more grown up version of Whispers in the library. It's like a warm hug. Super comforting, quite a clean scent, very well blended vanilla with a hint of fruit."

Guerlain
For nearly two centuries, Guerlain has been a House of High Perfumery and High Cosmetics redefining the meaning of luxury. The brand's collection of timeless yet contemporary scents offers olfactory creations with a signature style anyone with a love for luxury can appreciate for men, women, the home, and beyond.
Scent Type: Warm floral | Notes: Oud wood, white almond, raspberry accord, Atlas cedar, rose, Madagascar vanilla, sandalwood
Leave it to fellow beauty editor Shawna Hudson to completely sell me on this one. Oud Nude Eau de Parfum, part of Guerlain's acclaimed L'Art & La Matiere collection, is the grown-up (but not overly mature) sultry rose fragrance I've been waiting for. The perfume blends a beguiling raspberry accord with Atlas cedar and delicate rose and is described by the brand as "a luminous and skin-soft oud wood." It's like something out of a romance novel.
Customer Review: "Minimalist and sexy are two things that come to mind when describing Oud Nude. Oud Nude is the perfect namesake for this 'barely-there-oud' masterpiece. The oud in this one is sheer and soft. … It is not dark, heavy, nor too earthy as with many mainstream ouds. I would further describe the oud as an abstract tickle of leather. You pick up on the slightest leathery oud note, but it is not heavy nor in your face. "
Scent Type: Warm floral | Notes: Bergamot, mandarin, pear, French lavender, sambac jasmine, sandalwood, neroli, vanilla, iris, sandalwood
Mon Guerlain Eau de Parfum is a tribute to the modern woman and one of our absolute favorites to wear on a daily basis. It's produced with exceptional raw materials and uses powdery fresh notes of jasmine, mandarin, and French lavender set against a bold background of sandalwood, neroli, and vanilla. It's an unforgettable fragrance that provides a memorable olfactory experience for its wearer.
Customer Review: "Clean, fresh, airy, classy and sophisticated. What a divine scent! It's whimsical and sweet. It makes me think of lemon cakes and tea al fresco, of laughter and life and travel! It's just so free and floaty; it draws me in every time. Definitely for the freedom lover, the lover of the fresh outdoors, the one with an adventurous heart. So individual. There isn't another scent quite like it!"

Perfumehead
Perfumehead is a luxury brand founded in Los Angeles by Daniel Patrick Giles, specializing in handcrafted extrait parfum featuring the world's finest essential oils, natural extracts, and safe synthetics. The brand's audacious visual style and a distinctive use of typography are as memorable as the scents they decorate.
Scent Type: Citrus floral | Notes: Tuberose, blood orange, orange flowers, night-blooming jasmine, moonflower, patchouli, musk
I would say this one is a solar floral, but in truth, it's exactly how I would imagine a flower blooming in the moonlight to smell. Featuring notes of powdery fresh trumpet-shaped tuberose, blood orange, orange flowers, and night-blooming jasmine, this perfume is a new favorite of mine. Moon Flower is also an extrait de parfum, meaning it's formulated with a high concentration of absolute oils for long-lasting wear.
Customer Review: "Moon Flower is a very bright floral but in a sweet youthful way, not mature or dated at all. Vibrant and long-lasting. Smells like tiny yellow flowers, hand picked to place on those cute sugar cookies with edible flowers on Pinterest. I think of a perfect blue sky with a digital yellow sun and Mario Brothers type clouds."
Scent Type: Amber gourmand | Notes: Galbanum, cinnamon bark, cacao, orris butter, tobacco leaf, amber, suede, black musk
Okay, I'll say it—I'm still 100% in my Cowboy Carter era and have been wearing this perfume to lean into it. Our beauty director, Erin Jahns, is also a huge fan of this one. The perfume is inspired by the Sunset Strip in the '70s and uses an addictive blend of cacao, galbanum, tobacco leaf, and smooth black musk that's sensual and mysterious with just a hint of sweetness.
Customer Review: "On the dry down, I pick up syrupy berry nuances woven into the mix and very soft musk—so elegantly done, Cosmic Cowboy simply smells like a delicious memory of an incredibly fun night of dancing, drinking and flirting at one of LA’s chicest clubs, bottled and preserved. I seriously cannot get enough of this scent—it’s turning into a full-blown addiction that I’m only too happy to indulge."

Parfums de Marly
Scent Type: Amber floral | Notes: Neroli essence, bergamot essence, yuzu essence, jasmine sambac, orange blossom absolute, mahonial, tonka bean absolute, tonka bean resinoid, vanilla accord, amber accord
Here's a sophisticated amber scent that blends notes of juicy citrus, fresh florals, and creamy vanilla like a dream. Although it just launched, I can already envision myself wearing the stunning Parfums de Marly perfume on its own throughout the warmer months, or layered with elegant, fruity, and floral perfumes. Plus, how gorgeous is this peach-colored bottle?
Customer Review: "Bold and intense, Athénaïs opens with the glow of orange blossom, like golden hour unfurling on the skin. Bergamot and yuzu give it a flirty citrus sparkle, though rich vanillic amber in the base already peaks through, lending the composition a voluptuous, and a touch moody, depth. This is what strikes me about Athénaïs first—this scent is unexpectedly full of contrasts, juxtaposing the glow of citruses with the creamy florals and darker, resinous tones."
Scent Type: Floral musk | Notes: Bergamot, mandarin, white peach, orange blossom, white flowers, white musks, akigalawood, vanilla, vetiver
Of all the Parfums de Marly fragrances that capture our attention, this fresh and elegant take on white florals has us dreaming of early spring days with vibrant bergamot, orange blossom, white florals, and smooth akigalawood. "I'm not a fan of powdery finishes, but Valaya just might make me change my mind. It has this optimism to it that's so beautiful," says Shapiro.
Customer Review: "The smell of this is addicting and I reach for this all the time. It's something that I never get tired of smelling. I don't know how to give a review based on notes and all of that, but I want to say that this is the most clean, fresh, and long-lasting fragrance in the fresh category that I've ever tried in my life. It is beautiful and I can't imagine anyone disliking this. It is perfection."

Ellis Brooklyn
Ellis Brooklyn officially debuted in June 2015 as the brainchild of New York Times beauty columnist and luxury natural fragrance brand founder Bee Shapiro to convey health and beauty. Every Ellis Brooklyn fragrance is inspired by American destinations, stories, and experiences.
Scent Type: Fruity floral | Notes: Pink pineapple, palm leaves, coconut water, wild jasmine, plumeria, lily of the valley
This eau de parfum is a favorite of Shapiro's (and by far the most elevated, fruit-forward option of this edit). "I adore Ellis Brooklyn Miami Nectar eau de Parfum because it's giving you a guilt-free trip to South Beach luxury vacation," says Shapiro. "It's this bold and sexy pink pineapple that captures your initial attention, but it's the underlying moss note that gives the fragrance that luxe feel and finish."
Customer Review: "Miami Nectar by Ellis Brooklyn has become one of my absolute favorite perfumes! The pineapple note is bright and juicy, reminiscent of freshly cut fruit, while the coconut adds a creamy, luscious depth without being overpowering. Together, they create a harmonious and refreshing scent that feels both exotic and comforting. I love the photorealistic piña colada scent that this perfume has. It is an instant mood booster for me when I spritz this on myself."
Scent Type: Woody spices | Notes: Saffron, juniper berries, cardamom, soft suede, bourbon, violet, praline, guaiacwood, ladbanum, musk, vanilla, patchouli, cedarwood, sandalwood
This perfume captures the coziness of finally peeling off your snowsuit after a day on the mountain, just in time to enjoy sipping on cider in front of a cozy fire. It opens with fresh notes of saffron and juniper before unfurling to reveal a heart of smooth suede, bourbon, violet, and praline. Lastly, we're greeted with a luminous base that features the smokiness of patchouli against a base of cedarwood and sandalwood.
Customer Review: "It is so universal and truly perfect for every occasion! To me it just feels like driving through Washington, when you’ve never seen the west before and the fog is high through the mountains, the sun is dormant behind the clouds. There’s a sense of wonder and optimism. Apres is a whole vibe and story in a bottle."

Tom Ford
Scent Type: Warm floral | Notes: Black truffle, bergamot, bitter orange, black plum, black orchid, patchouli, vanilla
Who What Wear's beauty team loves this one so much that we dedicated an entire Deep Review to it. To me, it's the TikTok-viral office siren trend in a bottle. The scent features narcotic ylang-ylang, black truffle, and bergamot set against warm and sensual notes of dark florals and rich fruit accords. I wish I knew about this one in high school when I was basing my personality on The Devil Wears Prada's Emily Charlton.
Customer Review: "Hypnotic. Intoxicating. Dark. Sweet. Overwhelming. Addictive. I have tried some of the private blends but I always find myself coming back to Black Orchid, my absolute favorite [Tom Ford] fragrance. It almost induces a trance like dream state of mind that I want to live in permanently."
Scent Type: Woody spices | Notes: Dark cherry, saffron, osmanthus, apricot, olive, leather, woods
If you've ever doubted the magic of woodsy notes combined with syrupy dark cherry, Tom Ford's Cherry Smoke will change your mind. This chic, bold, and smoldering fragrance features dark cherry ignited by osmanthus, saffron, and smoked woods for a result that smells like the perfect night out at your favorite cocktail lounge.
Customer Review: "The sour cherry note carries itself in a playful dance with the smoothness of saffron. The fruitiness of osmanthus and apricot support the cherry by enhancing it's juicy ripeness. It's like opening up a black Mansur Gavriel handbag with the iconic bright red interior. A seductive yet elegant leathery heart that is tamed by the modest smoke. Hypnotic yet restrained, flirty yet deep with the woods, familiar but so mysteriously fascinating."

How I Chose
As with all of our buying guides at Who What Wear, we compile our edits based on original testing and expert recommendations. To decide which luxury fragrance will do the best job of rounding out a perfume collection, I relied on my firsthand knowledge of the products gained through testing, as well as picks from my fellow beauty editors and input from a perfumer. I also considered several factors, including wearability, price point, and packaging. We're aware of how important these factors are for a wide range of preferences, so I made sure to list out all the helpful details to help simplify the shopping process. Of course, customer reviews were also kept in mind when creating this list and are included beneath my top picks.
