11 ’90s Movies With the Best Style Inspiration

It’s no secret that the ’90s are back in a big way these days, with everyone from fashion designers to top bloggers tapping into the era’s minimalist and often grungy style. But there was more to the decade than slip dresses and flannel, so, to freshen our perspective and get some new inspiration, we decided to revisit some of our absolute favorite movies from the period.

This cheeky film based in the ’70s is drowning in style inspiration, from Rollergirl’s (Heather Graham) heart-shaped sunnies and tube socks to Amber Waves’ (Julianne Moore) sparkly dresses and floral hair clips.

Between Kat Stratford’s (Julia Stiles) moody tomboy duds—a host of tank tops and cargo pants—and her popular sister Bianca’s ubergirly matching separates, there’s something in this film for everyone.

True to their characters, Reese Witherspoon’s Annette wears a host of innocent-looking sweater dresses and mom jeans, while Sarah Michelle Gellar’s naughtier Kathryn opts for suggestive pieces like low-cut dresses and sheer lace tops.

Liv Tyler stuns as Lucy Harmon in this dreamy film, traipsing around in flowy white maxi dresses and paper-thin floral-print shifts.

Between the seven main characters in this classic childhood flick, all the ’90s bases are covered, from new-money prep (sweater vests, tube socks) to tomboy (striped tees, overalls) to tree-hugging hippie (paisley on paisley, with a hint of flannel).

Uma Thurman kicks serious butt in this classic crime film as gangster wife Mia Wallace, rocking body-hugging black dresses and one of the most memorable white button-downs in film history.

In this campy supernatural thriller, a crew of wannabe witches, including Neve Campbell, takes prep-school staples (pleated skirts, plaid dresses, cardigans) to the dark side.

Although much has been made of Julia Roberts’ pre-transformation clothes in this film (she plays a hooker named Vivian), we’re taken by her ladylike style after the fact, when she dons a host of A-line dresses and ball gowns worth drooling over.

No surprise here, but we still can't get enough of the clothes in Clueless. Somehow, Cher and her high school clique continue to convince us that plaid minis, high socks and simple red Alaïa sheaths are the answer to our style prayers.

As another film set in the ’70s, we can't get enough of Parker Posey and Milla Jovovich's costumes: a mix of bohemian tops (off-the-shoulder and embroidered) and gym clothes (how can anyone forget that SENIORS T-shirt?)

In this other Liv Tyler gem, she plays a record-store employee named Corey alongside Renée Zellweger's Gina. Both ladies rock miniskirts with cardigans, a nod to the common ’90s pairing of the dowdy with the revealing.
