Style Notes: Zara is one of my go-to destinations for trend-led denim, and its barrel-leg jeans are a great option if you want to experiment with the silhouette without spending a fortune. What I liked most was the shape: there’s enough volume through the leg to give you that curved, fashion-forward look, but they don’t feel so exaggerated that they’re difficult to style.

The rigid cotton denim also helps them hold their shape rather than collapsing around the leg. As someone with a 5'2" frame, barrel jeans can very quickly overwhelm my frame, but I actually liked the slightly cropped effect of Zara’s styles. I’d keep the rest of the outfit streamlined: a fitted knit, a simple belt and ballet flats or kitten heels would be my choice.

Style Notes: Whilst I’m already very familiar with COS’ straight-leg jeans, the Bay was the first barrel-leg style I’d tried from the brand, and it might just be my ideal take on the silhouette. The leg has a pronounced curve that feels directional without veering too trend-led, whilst the clean finish and weightier denim give them that polished, sculptural quality COS does so well.

I was particularly impressed by the ankle-grazing length. 3. Uniqlo Baggy Barrel-Leg Jeans

Style Notes: When it comes to jeans that I've genuinely worn to death, nothing beats the Uniqlo barrel-leg jeans. They sit high on the waist before curving generously through the leg and tapering back in towards the ankle, giving you a proper barrel silhouette without feeling overly exaggerated. The cotton-and-lyocell denim is also noticeably softer than some of the more rigid pairs I tried, which makes them incredibly comfortable for everyday wear.

What really won me over, though, was the fit. I’m typically used to jeans requiring some kind of alteration, but Uniqlo offers this pair in multiple lengths, so I could get that intentional ankle-grazing finish rather than having excess denim dragging on the floor. A dream!

Style Notes: I had very high expectations for Levi’s—it is a denim brand, after all—and I like that its take on the barrel jean still feels rooted in classic denim. The Cinch Barrel has that cool, relaxed quality I associate with vintage Levi’s rather than looking like it was designed purely around a micro-trend.

For me, these are the pair to choose if you usually live in straight or relaxed jeans but want something that feels a little more current. I’d style them exactly as I would my favourite vintage denim: a simple tee or knit, leather belt and loafers.

Style Notes: If Zara’s pair is the fashion-forward option, M&S is the one I’d recommend to someone who wants a barrel jean they can realistically wear every day. The curve feels more subtle, so you still get that modern rounded silhouette without feeling like the jeans are wearing you. And, best of all, they're available in five lengths, including extra short, short, regular, long and extra long.
