I Thought This Party Trend Was 'Dated' and 'Cheap', But It's About to Make a Very Chic Comeback

We’re officially entering peak party season, and with invitations coming at you from all angles, balancing your December calendar can at times feel like a fine art. Whilst a brimming diary can take its toll, it’s not without its delights, and I wouldn’t be a fashion writer if I didn’t count event-season styling as one of the greatest things about this time of year. This season, we’ve been treated to a wealth of party-styling inspiration. With influencers donning fluffy faux feathers and rosettes across our For You pages and celebrities styling velvet and shimmering accents to every event, I'm newly brimming with ideas and eager to start planning outfits. To my delight, I'm very excited to report that sparkle is back on the agenda. Specifically, it's the sequin skirt that I'm most interested in shimmying into for all my festive occasions, and luckily for me, high-street and designer brands alike have plenty of perfect party options.

You could argue that sequin skirts have felt "dated" for the past few seasons, replaced instead with embellished jeans and elegant dresses. However, thanks to a few clever styling tweaks, they feel fresh again. This year, I'm taking a leaf out of the Gen Z styling book and planning my outfits around the fun-trousers-and-basic-top formula—but with a party-season twist. Opting for a sequin-clad skirt as the fun alternative to a silky dress or wide-leg trousers, I'll be wearing mine with a fine-knit jumper, a simple tee or a silk blouse, all season long.

With its inherently playful essence, the sequin skirt is the new-season party piece you'll find me in at the bar and on the dance floor—unless I'm in sequin trousers, that is. From maxis to minis, give Christmas lights a run for their money with my edit of the best sequin skirts to buy now.
