My Friend in NYC Wants to Ditch Her Simple Flats—I Told Her to Try These 2 Trendier Styles Instead
Comfy and chic.

One of my friends who works in tech and lives in New York City texted me recently about shoe recommendations that could work for her on-the-go lifestyle. She specifically wanted my thoughts on upgrades to the standard ballet flats and strappy sandals she typically wears. As I mentioned, these silhouettes are classic, so she'll continue incorporating them into her looks, but fresh shoe picks that give her ensembles a trend-forward spin were of utmost interest.
The two trendier flats I recommended? Yes, jelly shoes and sheer/mesh ballet flats. These two styles continue to be incredibly popular among the fashion crowd, and I thought they'd add a fun and chic element to her spring and summer wardrobe.
I should also mention that she keeps it pretty neutral in terms of clothing and leans into elevated basics. Trying something different in the shoe area is an easy way to add a trend element to a look without totally changing the entire vibe.
Keep scrolling for visual and shopping inspiration showcasing the two flats trends my NYC friend is now considering.
Jelly Flats
I first told my friend that she has to test out the jelly-flats trend. My mom actually just bought the famous Vince pair and can't get enough of them. Led by The Row's reimagined take on jelly shoes from the S/S 24 collection, jelly flats have been gaining momentum as a cool and playful choice. There are now a plethora of next-level silhouettes from a range of designers and brands. I suggested teaming them with a more minimal ensemble to really let them shine.

Sheer Flats
As I mentioned above, my friend gravitates toward her classic ballet flats (which are a staple and will never go out of style), but I suggested the popular sheer silhouettes as an update for spring and summer. This see-through iteration is forward and can be dressed up with a skirt or trousers or down with jeans or shorts.
