I Spend All My Free Time Researching Vintage Bags on eBay—Here's The One Style I Know Will Be 'It' By October
I finally got my hands on one too.
One of my favorite hobbies I've accidentally picked up is predicting what vintage bag will become popular again next. I spend a lot of my free time scouring secondhand sites like eBay for vintage designer bags from the early '90s and '00s. By now I've become pretty confident in my ability to spot a bag that has the 'It' factor. I just have a knack for identifying what shoppers are currently yearning for.
I've done this countless times before, with Galliano-era Dior bags, the now iconic again Balenciaga City bag and even sleeper hits like the Celine Boogie Bag. The bag I currently think will have a major resurgence by the end of 2026 is the velvet Gucci Jackie bag from Tom Ford's time at the house, from F/W 1999.
And I'm not just saying that because the bag is beautiful. Like anything from Tom Ford's Gucci runway, it just screams sex appeal. It's a undeniably sexy bag!
But the reason I think we'll start to see it everywhere isn't just because it is pretty but because it is textured. Texture in general is a major 2026 runway trend. This year alone there's been flowing fringed skirts at Chanel, fuzzy bunny shoes at Sandy Liang, and fur-trimmed leather coats at Miu Miu. As more and more fashion fans aim to spend less time online and try to develop a taste that isn't determined by an algorithm, the more they want to touch grass. Adding more texture into their wardrobes just feels like the more literal manifestation of that desire to feel. Texture is a trend you have to experience outside of a screen to truly and fully understand.
Once it dawned on me that textured bags would likely soon be on the rise, I refocused on scoring my favorite textured bag of all time, the 1999 Tom Ford Gucci Jackie. There are so many color ways of the bag, from a bright pink to a bright green, but the one that always spoke to me was a very light, almost purple, grey. It's just so sultry and I rarely ever come across a bag that has that same tone.
The first place I went to see if I could find the bag is eBay, which is where I typically find so many of my secondhand grails. Low and behold I found the bag in the exact color I wanted. Thankfully the listing also came with an authenticity guarantee, something I've only recently learned about after a visit to eBay's Authenticity Center. Every brand-name item on eBay that has that deep blue authenticity guarantee checkmark is inspected in person by an authenticator who is a expert in their field. The item is searched for specific brand checkmarks to not only confirm it's real but also to insure that the customer is getting an item that comes exactly as described.
Now that I have the bag , I've been spending a lot of time just stroking the velvet and imagining how it'll transform my fall wardrobe for the best. And while these Tom Ford Gucci velvet Jackies aren't exactly cheap right now, I feel so deeply certain we're about to see them skyrocket on the secondhand market soon enough. So do yourself a favor and score one now before it becomes impossible to reasonably source one.
