What’s Cool in Fashion is a series where our managing editor, Kristen Nichols, highlights the trends and designers on her radar—and how she’s wearing them IRL.
As a fashion editor for Who What Wear, my eye is constantly focused on the trends unfolding everywhere from runway shows to the street style scene to product hitting retailers. When it comes to the outfits I’m wearing, I’m regularly interpreting the trends for myself and working them into my personal style. Yep, you’ll often see me posting outfits on my Instagram account, @kristenmarienichols, with photos of the items I’m wearing and an inside glimpse at my life as a Who What Wear editor.
So what is on my radar right now? I always have my eye out for new talent and I’ve added in pieces from on-the-rise designers like Rotate, The Range, and Fry Powers that have caught my eye. These brands are tapping into cool trends like utility pants, tropical colors, and pearl jewelry that have taken the fashion world by storm in 2019. I’ve also been wearing great finds from affordable retailers like & Other Stories and H&M that have incredible basics like a luxe satin blazers and racer tanks, but also trend-forward pieces like wide-leg jeans in canary yellow. Ahead, see the 13 pieces I’m wearing now and shop the edit for yourself.
I recently picked up this patent skirt from LPA, and it has become one of my staples for the office. It updates a classic pencil skirt shape with a sleek finish.
A great duster coat is one of the items that was noticeably missing from my closet. When I spotted this one from Reformation, I knew it was exactly what I was looking for. Kaia Gerber was spotted wearing it, which made me even more convinced that I found the perfect coat for my wardrobe.
Utility pants are of the big 2019 trends I'm very behind. The pair from The Range is just perfect.
I'm a huge fan of classic pieces that I'll be able to wear for years and years—and that include these two new items in my wardrobe. L.A. brand Helfrich designs the perfect bodysuits, which I've been wearing as the base of my outfits lately. And I just found these tweed pants from Tularosa, which can easily transition from the office to an evening out.
You'll notice that most of my outfits are rooted in neutrals like black and tan, but I do love a punch of color every now and then. These yellow wide-leg jeans from H&M definitely deliver on that. Bonus: They're now on sale for just $25.
Speaking of H&M, this top is another great find I uncovered from the retailer. It has great minimal lines and a racer silhouette that feels very of-the-moment. I paired the top with earrings from Fry Powers—a cool label I recently discovered. It works with recycled pearls, and these beautiful Baroque earrings are just stunning.
Ankle boots are a must in my wardrobe, and these from Dear Frances are the newest ones to land in my closet. I can't decide which detail I love more—the luxe faux-croc finish or the sleek kitten heel.
Rotate is one brand that is about to be everywhere in 2019. Its pieces are fun and cool and perfect for a night out.
I have a pretty sizable section of my closet dedicated to blazers but made room for this new one from & Other Stories. The satin finish feels elegant and instantly makes a simple outfit with jeans and a top feel sophisticated. Another must in my wardrobe? This sculptural necklace from Bagatiba (an L.A.-based jewelry brand I can't get enough of).
