The One Small Detail That Makes Coats Look So Much More Expensive
While the weather might still say summer, we are edging ever closer to autumn's chilly embrace. The light linens and cottons residing in our wardrobes will soon make way for wools and leathers, and summer frocks will be packed away in place of cosy coats and knitwear. When considering our autumn capsule, the one item which is always at the top of our priority list is a good coat, and this year, I've noticed that all my favourite outerwear pieces have one thing in common: They come sans collar.
Sometimes, it's the small details that make an item of clothing stand out from the crowd. And in my experience, it's the details that are distinct from the popular offerings on the market that make something extra special. While I love the more traditional tailored styles that have proliferated over the last few years, it's often quite hard to find one that feels unique. Perhaps, that's why the collarless coat appeals to me so much—it offers a clean-lined point of difference that, somehow, makes any outfit look so much more expensive.
The best thing about this trend is it comes in many forms, so there's no need to be too prescriptive about style. It covers everything from belted leather coats and reversible shearling styles to quilted puffas and vintage tweed. My personal favourites are Ulla Johnson's rust-coloured coat and COS's unbelievably chic belted leather version. However, if you're looking for a lower price point, I would also recommend Mango's checked iteration, which would look so good with jeans and chunky boots, or Massimo Dutti's languorous knitted coat.
