This Fall Collection Proves Romance Is Far From Dead

Welcome to Runway Matters, where we're delivering notes straight from the runway so you can quickly digest the most important trends and noteworthy moments from the F/W 18 shows.

When the show notes begin with, "We believe in the notion that romance is timeless," you know you're about to witness something magical. This year, Brock Collection aimed to deliver as intimate of an experience as possible, including a smaller guest list, a soundtrack that transported you, and a collection that exuded all things romance.

Just what are "all things romance"? Think cascading velvet ribbons, vintage floral fabrics, decadent bustiers, and organza and tulle flowers adorning nearly every other look. Brock's F/W 18 collection tapped into a time long, long ago but remained ever so current. While we could gawk over every minute detail from the brand we admire dearly, we're breaking down the collection for you below according to the key takeaways you should know.

The Trend That's on the Rise

There's one trend we've been keeping a watchful eye on over the past few months: gloves. Brock sent out model after model donning the sleeper trend in ways that felt fresh yet nostalgic. Paired with everything from romantic bustiers to the one surprising basic we saw from Brock this season, gloves are here to make a name for themselves this fall, and we're here for it.

The Next-Level Romance

The show notes explained the overarching theme for Brock this season (and most seasons) better than we ever could: "But, before all else and in whatever way it manifests, romance is forever." From the repurposed vintage floral fabrics to the bustiers to the hypnotizing flowing velvet ribbons, the romance in this collection was not just a theme, it was an emotion, an experience, and a memory.

The Furry Accents That Won Our Hearts

Remember that furry off-the-shoulder coat from Brock's FW17 collection? Well, here we are a year later, and the fuzzy accent has managed to work its way into the iconic Brock aesthetic almost as much as romance has. Between the furry cuffs and the full coat, this beat is definitely one to watch from Brock in upcoming collections.

The Details That Made a Difference

Belts, velvet ribbons, unfinished edges, and the previously mentioned repurposed floral vintage fabrics made a huge impact throughout this fall collection. Beyond the obvious appreciation for new styling tricks and trends, each of these decisions made by the designers created an aesthetic for the collection that upholds the brand ethos as we know it—incomparable romance that lasts forever.
