Bring on the Compliments—24 Dresses That Are Easy, Chic and Perfect for Summer
If there's one thing I'm sure of, it's that I’m a dress person through and through. I’d say a hefty 80% of my wardrobe consists of them, and while there are certain shapes and fits I’m drawn to more than others (I’m looking at you, floaty, puff-sleeved numbers) I’m definitely not fussy when it comes to dress styles.
This is a trait I can 100% attribute to my incredibly stylish and perennially cool mum, who herself is a dress fanatic. From linen strappy styles for holidays to party-ready minis, and transitional floral midis that go with boots to work-appropriate shirt styles, between us we probably have every dress style possible accounted for. Luckily we’re about the same size, and who doesn’t love a bit of wardrobe swapping every now and again? However, there is one dress that reigns supreme for me, my mum and a whole myriad of editors, influencers and fashion people alike, and that's a maxi dress.
Wearing Joslin.
What’s the beauty of a maxi dress I hear you ask? Where to begin. Firstly, a maxi dress is possibly the easiest wardrobe staple to wear and style. Just throw on your favourite with weather-appropriate footwear and you’re good to go. Secondly, they’re really easy to transition from season to season and occasion to occasion, making them one of the most versatile items in your sartorial arsenal. And thirdly, they are just so damn comfy. And that is the biggest plus of all.
Since there is no time more appropriate for me to sing the praises of a maxi dress than spring/summer, I've crafted my ultimate list of the best maxi dresses that will take you from the park to the office, and a wedding to a beach break. Plus, to make things really easy for you, I’ve split them up into four core categories: Neutral maxis, bright maxis, black maxis and floral maxis. Enjoy!

1. The Best Neutral Spring Maxi Dresses
A knitted maxi is so versatile. Wear this scoop back sytle with heels, sandals or trainers.
I'm obsessed with the drop waist on this ruched style. How perfect would it be for summer holidays?
Another tempting linen Reformation style that also comes in a green floral pattern.
2. The Best Bright Spring Maxi Dresses
Wear this maxi on holiday with flip flops or to a wedding with heels.
If you want a slightly subtler colour, this soft blue style is perfect.
This lemon-colour linen is a summer dream.
This is sitting right at the top of my wish list right now.
3. The Best Black Spring Maxi Dresses
Add lashings of jewellery and you're set.
The square neckline gives this an extra elevated touch.
Another knitted style that will work hard for you all year round.
4. The Best Floral Spring Maxi Dresses
This vintage-inspired silk style immediately caught my eye. Such a great option for wedding season.
Dôen is a brand I return to time and time again for great quality dresses that don't date. And I love how this style proves that floral maxis don't have to be in pastel shades.
This strapless dress has an old-school Hollywood vibe.
Pair with sandals and some layered necklaces and you're set.
A bright maxi dress that makes you feel great is an investment worth making this year.

Poppy joined the Who What Wear UK team as managing editor in 2022. After graduating from university with a degree in English literature, she worked for a number of print and digital publications, including Women's Health, The Times, Hello! and Marie Claire. In these roles she assisted the fashion teams with print content as well as digital shopping features, shoots and celebrity news.
Prior to Who What Wear, Poppy worked at SheerLuxe as the commercial content manager. There she oversaw all paid-for site content and inclusions, managed the visual assets and briefs for branded content, and ensured all content—whether editorial or commercial—was in line with overall brand guidelines and tone. She also supported the editorial team by looking after visual merchandising on site and reviewing the brand’s daily newsletters.
As WWW UK’s managing editor, Poppy spends most of her time looking after the content calendar and all output across the brand, in addition to working with contributors, supporting with social media planning, assisting with branded content and contributing to brand strategy. Poppy prides herself on being organised, and a keen eye for detail means she oversees the production of tentpole moments such as Who What Wear’s quarterly celebrity covers, the Wedding Issue, team shoots, events, industry-facing moments, gift guides and more. In addition to this, Poppy ensures processes across the brand are efficient and effective, and is always on the lookout for ways the team can work smarter, not harder! As someone who works behind the scenes (Poppy loves a spreadsheet!), you won’t find many articles by Poppy on site, but when you do there’s no doubt they will either be focused on dresses, handbags or classic high-street buys. Or better yet, all three!
Born and raised in London, Poppy is a true city girl. When she's not thinking about clothes (or raiding her mum’s wardrobe), Poppy fills her time walking along the river with her 11-year-old labradoodle, getting stuck in a good book and enjoying as many of the city’s amazing restaurants and bars as her purse will allow! Her favourite London spots are Caravel for dinner, the Ham Yard Hotel for a fancy pre-theatre drink, Daunt Books for a new read, 26Grains for breakfast and Coal Drop's Yard for a spot of shopping.
