These 11 Setting Sprays Pass My All-Day Wear Test, Even in 30-Degree Weather
Trust me: these hardworking setting mists will keep your carefully applied makeup in place all day long.

As someone who doesn't wear a ton of makeup on a daily basis, I've never been hugely fussed about the longevity of the products I use on my face. After all, there's only so long that you can expect a bit of skin tint and a slick of cream blusher to last. But with yet another heat wave in full swing, I've noticed that my skin has been oilier than ever, and any makeup that I apply to my face has all but vanished by the time lunchtime rolls around.
Even on occasions when I push the boat out and apply the full works—foundation, highlighter, lipstick and the rest—I’ve experienced the same thing. Yet when I hopped on the tube during 30-degree temperatures or was pounding the streets feeling like a melted mess, I couldn’t help but notice how many other people were out there showing off colourful eyeliner, golden bronzer and ‘90s nude lips without a single smudge. The secret to longevity? The best setting sprays.
The Best Setting Sprays 2025
- Best overall setting spray: Milk Makeup Pore Eclipse Setting Spray (£37)
- Best for all-day wear: Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray (£32)
- Best affordable setting spray: e.l.f. Stay All Night Micro-Fine Setting Mist (£10)
- Best for special occasions: Urban Decay All Nighter Ultra Matte Setting Spray (£30)
- Best for added hydration: By Terry Hyaluronic Glow Setting Mist (£39)
Yes, basically every makeup artist that I’ve spoken to recently has told me that a setting spray is a non-negotiable if I want to give my makeup even a fighting chance of staying put in any kind of heat.
Yet, despite being a beauty editor, I’ve always avoided using them. (What can I say? I will do anything in my power to pare back my routine.) Thankfully, I found a bottle of the Milk Makeup Pore Eclipse Setting Spray (£37) in my stash and put it to the test on a particularly humid day. I set my look at around 7:30am, and when I went to remove my makeup at the end of the day, at around 7pm, I was blown away by the fact that most of it was still very much intact. Albeit with slightly faded lipstick and shinier skin. To say I was wowed is an understatement. I now genuinely don't think I will ever do my makeup without using a setting spray again.
What to Look for in a Setting Spray
There are hundreds of setting sprays on the market, so knowing what to look for can be difficult. Taking into account things like the weather and what kind of finish you like your makeup to have can also play a part.
“For hot weather in particular, I’d stay away from setting sprays that offer any additional hydration for dry skin because these can cause makeup to slip,” explains celebrity makeup artist Tania Grier. “Instead, look for sprays that target combination or oily skin—looking for the word ‘matte’ is a good general guideline.”
Of course, if you do have very dry skin or simply prefer that dewy look, or maybe you’re looking for a spray that’s for an event or a cooler season, then setting sprays that contain ingredients like hyaluronic acid are a great option too.
How to Apply a Setting Spray
For someone like me, the good thing about a setting spray is that it really does make a fast addition to your existing routine. “Tilt your chin up and spray from above, around ten inches away, so that the mist falls evenly on your entire face,” advises Grier. “It should be the very last thing you do, and try not to touch your face again once the spray has set.”
Typically, I skip mascara, but Grier has a tip if you do wear it most days. “I place a spoon over each eye while applying the setting spray so that it doesn’t affect the mascara,” she says.
How I Chose the Best Setting Sprays
After realising that I’ve been missing a trick when it comes to doing my makeup for years, I made it my mission to try basically every setting spray on the market. Thankfully, with the help of some very kind PRs and beauty editor friends, I have tried a ton of them over the last few weeks and can confidently say that I now have a comprehensive list of the best setting sprays on the market right now. (That's the good thing about a setting spray—it either works or it doesn't, so you'll know for sure by the end of the day if it's been worth your time and money.) Plus, Grier shared some of the setting sprays that she swears by in her pro makeup kit to help get some true expert insight as well.
1. Milk Makeup Pore Eclipse Setting Spray
First up, the product that converted me to setting sprays. Designed with oily skin in mind, this oil-free mist uses pore-blurring microspheres alongside lentil extract to absorb excess sebum and niacinamide to smooth pores. It's described as a mattifying setting spray, which initially put me off, as despite having oily skin, I've always liked a glowy finish to my makeup, but I'd describe the finish as velvety rather than totally matte. Not only does it keep my makeup looking pristine for around 12 hours at a time, but I'd say it actually gives the overall finish of my makeup more of a polished finish. It's truly brilliant and already has plenty of 5-star reviews singing its praises.
Pros
- Keeps oiliness at bay
- Lightweight mist
- Dials down excessive shine
Cons
- It's quite expensive
2. Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray
Without a doubt, this was the setting spray most raved about amongst my beauty editor friends, and I can see why. It's also an oil-free formulation, but it's also brimming with hydrating ingredients like Japanese green tea and aloe vera, so drier skin types will love this. However, even if you're on the oily side like me, this stuff really works. It's ultra-lightweight and leaves makeup looking fresh and radiant for hours and hours. Oh, and it smells really good too.
Pros
- Long-lasting
- Non-sticky
- Feels hydrating despite longevity
Cons
- The full-size is quite spendy, but there's a travel-size too
3. Vieve Invisiveil Setting Spray
On hot summer days, there’s something lovely about spritzing on Vieve’s Invisiveil Setting Spray regardless of its ability to keep makeup in place. It’s a lightweight and hydrating blend of skincare ingredients like niacinamide and antioxidants to keep skin looking fresh and bouncy, and the soft neroli scent smells beautifully spa-like.
All that aside, it also does a brilliant job of keeping makeup looking its best for hours at a time, leaving a natural finish that’s neither too matte nor overtly dewy. It simply makes skin look fresh and bright. It’s not as long-wearing as some others on the list, but it will get you through a work day with ease—just top it up at night if you’re heading out.
Pros
- Hydrating
- Diffuses textured areas
- Lovely neroli scent
Cons
- Would need to re-apply before evening for extra longevity
4. Anastasia Beverly Hills Dewy Set Setting Spray
Grier swears by the Anastasia Beverly Hills Dewy Set for a special-occasion setting spray. “I love it for weddings and beauty shoots because it keeps makeup in place but leaves a subtle satin sheen,” she explains.
It’s a lightweight, water-based mist that drenches skin with glow while setting it—something of a remarkable feat. The result is skin that never looks greasy, but rather subtly glows, and makeup that looks luminous even through the humidity. Plus, the coconut-vanilla scent smells like a mini holiday in a bottle.
Pros
- Luminous glow
- Refreshes makeup throughout the day
- Hydrating so great for drier skin
Cons
- Lighweight hold
5. e.l.f. Stay All Night Micro-Fine Setting Mist
Typically, in my testing, I have found that it pays to spend a little more on a setting spray if you want longevity, but this one from e.l.f. blows that theory out of the water. Coming in at under a tenner, this affordable mist uses a universally appealing blend of green tea, cucumber and aloe to set makeup in place for the long haul. In actual fact, it's so damn good that it sells out really fast, so this is one to add to cart when the opportunity presents itself.
Pros
- Affordable
- Great for all-day wear
- Very fine mist
Cons
- Has quite a strong lingering scent
6. Urban Decay All Nighter Ultra Matte Setting Spray
Best for special occasions
When I think of setting sprays, it's Urban Decay's cult classic that always springs to mind first, but Grier actually swears by this Ultra Matte iteration. "It's a kit staple for clients whose skin tends to 'eat their makeup' without it on," she says.
As someone with oily skin myself, I can attest to how well this stuff works. Despite the ultra-matte label, I'm always impressed at how vibrant this leaves makeup looking without any chalkiness that you might expect. Instead, it's absolutely skin-like yet ensures that your makeup stays exactly where you've put it until you wash it off that night.
Pros
- Locks makeup in place
- Works in really humid weather
- Transfer-resistant
Cons
- Might be a little drying
7. MAC Fix+ Stay Over
This hardworking mist has all of the benefits of MAC's cult Fix+ hydrating spray with the added bonus of increasing the longevity of your makeup and preventing transfer. (Mask wearing was still in full effect in the UK when this product launched, and so many of the brilliant reviews say that it stopped makeup from transferring onto face masks.) While I don't think the longevity is quite as impressive as my favourite from Milk Makeup, it feels lovely on the skin and definitely keeps my makeup looking good for hours. Plus, the hydrating benefits mean you can use it to prep your skin before makeup application, too.
Pros
- Makes colourful makeup look more bright and vibrant
- Can use it to prime or set
- Lasts well
Cons
- Slightly tacky before it dries down
8. L'Oreal Paris Infallible 3-Second Setting Spray
Best for quick setting
I wasn’t expecting much from this little high-street spray, let alone a makeup artist’s seal of approval, but Grier claims this as her makeup kit staple. “It’s great for red carpet events as it offers 36 hours of invisible protection, and it’s perfect for humid weather,” she explains. If you’re in a rush, then this really can’t be beaten. It has an ultra-fine mist that dries down in seconds with no droplets or stickiness left behind. And it’s quite portable too, so it’s perfect for popping into your handbag if you’re at a summer wedding and want to touch up. Not that you’d have to—once this stuff is on, it really does lock your makeup down so it won’t shift. My only gripe is that it does feel a little bit hairspray-like at first, but the strong smell fades away fast.
Pros
- Really long hold in hot weather
- Affordable
- Dries fast
Cons
- It does smell a little like hairspray
9. REFY Face Setter
For hot and sticky days, REFY’s Face Setter delivers everything you want from a setting spray—staying power and the impression that you have naturally radiant skin (that’s never sweaty). The addition of polyglutamic acid here is brilliant at keeping skin hydrated, plump and firm without adding excessive levels of glow as some hydrating mists do. Instead, it mists onto skin to give an almost velvety veil of protection that keeps the makeup beneath looking naturally radiant and well-blended.
Pros
- Alcohol and fragrance free
- Contains polyglutamic acid to plump skin
- Long-lasting
Cons
- Best for natural makeup looks
10. Too Faced Hangover 3-in-1 Primer & Setting Spray
This is increasingly becoming a go-to for me on mornings when I look absolutely shattered. (Rather sadly, not from a hangover but courtesy of my baby who hates sleeping!) It's got lots of skin-friendly ingredients like coconut water and probiotics to deliver a soothing burst of hydration to tired skin, but it also adds a veil of luminosity to your finished makeup look. Basically, it fakes the illusion of sleep while keeping your handiwork in place. Genius.
Pros
- Multipurpose
- Refreshes skin
- Instantly brightens
Cons
- Strong coconut scent
11. By Terry Hyaluronic Glow Setting Mist
Best for hydration
More than a setting spray, the By Terry Hyaluronic Glow Setting Mist feels like an extra layer of skincare over your makeup. The mist itself feels almost juicy on the skin, offering up an extra dose of hydration to drier complexions, but it never looks wet or shiny. Instead, on oily skin like mine, it just helps to add a fresh luminosity that looks intentional rather than sheeny. Infused with hyaluronic acid, it's a great option for really hot days when skin can end up feeling parched and tight after time spent in the sun, so it makes a great option for touch-ups in the heat. A must for hydration, radiance and staying power.
Pros
- Infused with hyaluronic acid
- Feels luxurious
- Glowy and radiant finish
Cons
- Not the best for longevity—needs to be reapplied
