I Have Oily Skin, But These Concealers That Stay In Place All Day Long
From dawn until dusk, I’ve put the best long-lasting concealers through their paces to see which ones really hold up.
I used to be the kind of person who would nip into the office bathroom post-lunch to make sure that my makeup was still looking as fresh as it did first thing, and combat any fading patches or smudges with a touch-up or two. These days, however, like most of us, I simply don’t have the time for such self-indulgence. Instead, I need to put my makeup on once and trust that it will last through school runs, meetings and last-minute deadlines. And if I do happen to catch my reflection in a passing mirror? Then I can only pray that some of my morning handiwork is still in place. The problem right now is that while I used to rely on setting powders to improve longevity, now that I’m in my mid-30s, my oily skin is becoming dehydrated in places too. That means that I’m dealing with makeup either sliding south by lunchtime or clinging to emerging fine lines and dry patches. Either way, it isn’t ideal.
For me, concealer has to be my desert island beauty product. While I love a natural look, there’s no denying that I feel much more confident and polished when I’ve covered over my hormonal breakouts and stubborn dark circles. My tick list, therefore, is rather long. I need a long-lasting concealer that will grip without caking, smooth without settling, and stay put through work days, running after my kids, and late-night deadlines. So I made it my mission to test the best formulas on the market—those which promise serious staying power without sacrificing that real skin finish—to find out which ones can truly deliver.
What to Look For
With so many concealers on the market, I was keen to know exactly what I should be looking for when choosing a long-lasting formulation. Thankfully, celebrity makeup artist Tania Grier was able to steer me in the right direction. “I have quite a variety of concealers in my kit, but when I need longevity, I reach for one with high-quality skincare ingredients like hyaluronic acid, as this makes such a difference,” explains Grier. “The texture is important too—if it feels greasy, then it’s probably not going to last, and it might make your mascara or eyeliner run too. I’d avoid anything too slippery and look for formulas that take a bit more effort to blend, as that’s a good sign that it has staying power.”
And as for applying your concealer, Grier suggests letting it “marinate” on the skin for a minute before blending. “Start by applying a thin layer and blending it out quickly, then go back in with a couple of dots where you need more coverage and leave it alone for around 60 seconds until the texture thickens,” she explains. “Now blend it out with your fingers or a good blending brush. This technique guarantees better coverage every time and longevity.”
Best Long-Lasting Concealers
- Best for Oily Skin: Nars Soft Matte Complete Concealer (£30)
- Best for Hydration: Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Gel Concealer (£26)
- Best for Buildable Coverage: Fenty Beauty Pro Filt'r Instant Retouch Concealer (£24)
- Best for Coverage: Hourglass Vanish Concealer (£37)
- Best for Special Occasions: Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-In-Place Concealer (£30)
1. Nars Soft Matte Complete Concealer
As someone with oily skin who wants to know that their concealer really won't budge, this little pot is the key to longevity. Once applied in the morning, it stays put all day long with no risk of that midday shine creeping into the areas that you want covered up. I avoided this concealer for a long time due to the fact that matte formulas often stay put because they have a habit of clinging to dry patches of skin, but this has a soft, creamy finish that doesn't cake or settle into more dehydrated areas. If you are very dry, you might want to prep skin with a little extra moisture, but for oily skin, this is really a concealer you can rely on.
Pros
- Long-lasting matte finish
- Doesn't crease or slip
Cons
- Not the best option for very dry skin
2. Fenty Beauty Pro Filt'r Instant Retouch Concealer
When I want coverage that lasts all day without feeling heavy, this is the concealer that I reach for. It has a really beautiful texture that's creamy while still being lightweight enough to blend seamlessly into the skin. And it really grips in place too, even on oilier areas like my forehead. The finish of this does lean slightly more radiant than it is matte, so you might want to add a little powder for full all-day wear, but it does stay in tact pretty well alone. Plus, like all of Fenty Beauty's completion products, there is a huge range of shades so it's easy to find one that suits.
Pros
- Versatile coverage
- Extensive shade range
Cons
- Doesn't completely mattify
3. Maybelline Lifter Serum Concealer
A new discovery for me comes in the form of this high-coverage concealer that's packed full of all of those skincare ingredients that Grier suggested we look out for. In fact, this is almost more serum than concealer with a 78% skincare base, including a hydrating peptide blend and brightening caffeine to really illuminate skin. While I think so many people will love the glowiness of this formulation, I think skin which tends to be drier or has a lot of texture will really benefit from how nourishing this concealer is. Don't be fooled by the hydration, though; it still does an amazing job at covering everything from redness to dark circles, and it sticks around, too.
Pros
- Brightening effect
- Full coverage
Cons
- Might be too hydrating for very oily skin
4. Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Gel Concealer
As a huge fan of Milk Makeup's cult skin tint, I was really excited to see whether the newly launched concealer would live up to the same hype. Thankfully, it really does. I was sceptical at first as, typically, I find that stick concealers tend to be quite drying and cakey. However, this is a wonderfully creamy, gel-based texture that glides onto the skin and blends in easily with fingertips. The coverage is quite lightweight and brimming with three molecular weights of hyaluronic acid to deliver on hydration, but layers up well and once in place, it grips tight to the skin without creasing or slipping. If you love a natural makeup look, but have things like blemishes that you want to cover up, then this is a brilliant option.
Pros
- Natural finish
- Grips to the skin
Cons
- Need to be careful not to twist up too much product
5. Hourglass Vanish Concealer
If we really want to talk about longevity, then Hourglass's iconic Vanish Concealer promises a whopping 16-hour wear time. And while I don't think I've ever really needed my makeup to stay on my face for that long, I can assure you that this stuff has worn beautifully from my 7 A.M. application all the way through to putting the kids to bed at 7 P.M. On my oily skin in particular, it feels really weightless, yet has an impressively full coverage that never looks flat. And the satin-matte finish holds its own against sweaty commutes brilliantly.
Pros
- Ultra long-wear
- High coverage
Cons
- It's quite expensive
6. Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-In-Place Concealer
This is a concealer to have on hand when you are doing a 'proper' face of makeup and need it to last the entire day. A wedding would fit the bill, or maybe if you've got an important day at work where you know you want to look polished without having to check a mirror. True to its name, this stuff follows in the footsteps of Estée Lauder's iconic Double Wear foundation and handles hours of wear without even the slightest hint of fading or creasing—even on oilier areas of my face. The finish is what I'd call a velvety matte. It isn't shiny in the slightest, but there's still a softness to it. However, you will need to be prepared to spend a few minutes properly blending and buffing this into the skin to ensure its longevity as it is a little thick, but the effort is worth it.
Pros
- 24-hour wear time
- Versatile soft matte finish
Cons
- Does take some effort to blend
7. Kulfi Main Match Concealer
This has fast become one of my most-reached-for everyday concealers as it takes seconds to apply, instantly brightens and refreshes my complexion, and dials down redness and diffuses breakouts without looking too heavy. Grier rates it too as "a buildable concealer with good coverage that won't need touch-ups". As well as its longevity, the impressive thing about this concealer range is its focus on undertones, too. If you struggle to find concealers that look natural because they skew either too pink or too yellow on your skin, then you'll likely find a nuanced match in this lineup.
Pros
- Smooth, natural finish
- Versatile shade range
Cons
- More of a lightweight finish
8. L’Oréal Paris Infallible Skin Ink Concealer
If you like to use your concealer as a bit of a one-and-done base product (or a foundcealer as otherwise known), then this drugstore option has you covered. For the price point, it has really impressed me with its ability to stay put on my oilier zones without looking dry or cakey, yet glide over drier areas to even skin tone without looking like a mask. It's actually surprisingly lightweight, yet the semi-matte finish means that it sticks around all day.
Pros
- Affordable
- Can be used in place of foundation
Cons
- Can run out quite quickly
9. Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Finish Concealer
Of course, if you want makeup that glows, then Charlotte Tilbury is the first port of call, and this luxurious concealer gives that luminous finish without compromising on longevity. It works well all over the face, but it's particularly illuminating under the eyes, where it holds strong all day without slipping into any lines. For a really polished look with plenty of radiance, it's one of the best there is.
Pros
- Luminous yet long-lasting
- Silky serum texture
Cons
- A more expensive option
10. E.l.f. Cosmetics 16 Hour Camo Concealer
True to its claim, this concealer is one that stays put—rivalling some of the more expensive options on the market and sticking around all day long on my oily skin. This isn't a concealer for a barely-there look, though, the coverage is full, and it's very matte, but this is exactly why it refuses to budge through the busiest of schedules. The finish doesn't look flat; however, it just doesn't allow for any sheen or shine. If you're very dry, you might want to slick on some extra moisturiser first, but for all other skin types, I'd say that this is a standout if you're looking for an affordable long-wear option.
Pros
- Ultra matte finish
- Great budget option
Cons
- Can feel a little dry without the right skin prep
11. Rare Beauty Liquid Touch Concealer
Infused with a whole host of botanical ingredients like lotus, white water lily and gardenia, this is a featherlight concealer that delivers on hydration, radiance and a natural skin-like finish. On days that I look really tired, this acts like a lightbulb on my skin—adding brightness where I need it and evening discolouration without adding weight. I love that you can wear it fairly sheer for a really natural look, or layer it up, but whatever your preference, you can rest assured that it won't slip or slide away.
Pros
- Comfortable on the skin
- Versatile radiant finish
Cons
- Requires layering if you like more full coverage
12. It Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Concealer
If you have perpetual dark circles then this not only is this one of the best concealers for coverage, but one of the best for longevity too. It is thick, so have some patience ready to blend this in, but once that creamy finish has locked in you'll be left with incredibly bright and smooth under-eyes with no hint of discolouration. If you are very oily then it's worth pairing it with a dusting of powder just to lock it down fully, but dry skin will really get on well with how rich this creamy concealer is.
Pros
- Incredible coverage
- Does not budge
Cons
- Texture is quite thick
13. Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer
This is a high-street icon for good reason and has recently been revamped with a new look that includes a handy additional sponge applicator. Having been on the scene for an impressive 16 years, I can attest to the fact that this boasts incredible longevity and doesn't smudge, budge or transfer, no matter how long you've had it on your skin. The full coverage matte finish makes light work of covering over spots, dark circles and pigmentation, but it always manages to look velvety smooth rather than chalky. And the fact that it costs just £5 makes it all the more impressive.
Pros
- Affordable
- Covers spots and dark circles
Cons
- Might be too full coverage for some
