Do You Need a Neck Cream? Not Always—But These Ones Are Impressively Good
A great moisturiser will suit most necks just fine, but if you’re after extra lift, smoothness, or luminosity, these targeted neck creams are worth the upgrade.
As a beauty editor and esthetician, one of the questions I hear most often (usually once someone has finally nailed the essentials of their skincare routine) is what to add next. Clients will come to me proudly announcing that they’ve got their cleanser, serum, moisturiser and SPF sorted, and then, almost inevitably, the next wave of curiosity hits: Do I add a neck cream? An LED mask? An eye cream? It’s that moment when people start looking beyond the basics that this question inevitably lands in my inbox.
And the honest answer? No, a neck cream isn’t essential. For most people, simply taking the skincare you already use on your face and applying it down your neck (and ideally your chest) will do a perfectly good job. With consistent sunscreen, gentle exfoliation, and a well-formulated moisturiser, you’re already covering the fundamentals of keeping the area smooth, healthy, and supported.
But there are exceptions, and that’s where dedicated neck treatments come in. Some concerns go beyond what a standard moisturiser or serum can comfortably tackle: skin laxity, "tech neck" lines from constant screen time, crepiness, sun-induced pigmentation, or overall loss of firmness. Because the skin on the neck is thinner and because we don't tend to look after it until it's too late, it's one of the first to show signs of skin ageing. We invest in face serums and treatments, only for the neck and décolleté to quietly reveal our age, posture and sun habits long before our complexion does. For this reason, formulas designed specifically for the neck often feature peptides, resurfacing acids and collagen-supporting actives in richly hydrating textures that suit the neck better than face products do.
So while you don’t necessarily need a neck cream, if this area is one you’re especially concerned about—or you simply enjoy a more intentional, extended routine—a specialist product can make a difference. Below, I’ve curated a line-up of the very best neck creams and serums across every category, from brightening and hydrating to firming, smoothing and budget-friendly options that still deliver.
What does neck cream do?
Before we get into this list of the best neck creams, we'll take a look at what neck cream actually does, and to understand this, it's important to understand what the neck needs. I spoke to esthetician and skincare educator Katie Onyejekwe, who told me that since the skin on the neck generally is thinner and has lower sebaceous glands, less muscle and less fat, it's more prone to dryness and sensitivity. "Additionally, the skin doesn't turn over as fast as that on the face, and it's a very used part of the body—we're turning our heads all the time, looking down, looking around and looking at our phones, which is why we're seeing an increase of concern around 'tech neck' lines across the neck."
Most neck creams are designed to address this combination of concerns, so they will typically have quite rich, thick, hydrating formulas, but contain potent amounts of active ingredients to help address loose skin, lines and wrinkles. "Retinoids might be too strong for this area, so you could buffer these by applying them over a moisturiser," says Onyejekwe. "Peptide-based serums made with the neck in mind may help with signs of ageing, and formulas rich in antioxidants will help protect and support the skin there."
Do you need a neck cream?
"You can use dedicated neck creams if you are concerned about the appearance of the neck, but I'd recommend starting by extending your skincare down to your neck," explains Onyejekwe. If you're breakout-prone, she advises avoiding heavy products that may cause congestion, and to ensure that the neck is being properly cleansed to prevent product buildup. "Applying sunscreen is imperative as your neck is constantly on display so you need to work hard to protect it," she adds.

1. Nécessaire The Neck Serum
Key ingredients: Peptide‑blend (acetyl hexapeptide‑8, palmitoyl hexapeptide‑12, palmitoyl tetrapeptide‑7, palmitoyl tripeptide‑1 & ‑5), niacinamide, squalane, rosewater.
Sleek, fragrance-free and packed with peptides that actually do something, this formula is a personal favourite of mine. The lightweight, truly serum-like texture absorbs instantly, making it perfect for those who prefer a lighter, non-sticky formula. It won't erase your neck lines overnight (in case you were wondering, nothing will), but it's quietly effective, softening creases, boosting elasticity and leaving the skin feeling softer and smoother. It’s the sort of formula you notice most when you stop using it.
Pros
- Lightweight, fast-absorbing serum texture
- Peptide-rich formula
- Suitable for sensitive skin
Cons
- Expensive price for small amount
2. This Works Perfect Cleavage and Neck Serum
Key ingredients: Marine algae extract, hyaluronic acid, larch extract, ginseng, comfrey root.
Think of this as a long drink of water for the neck and chest. A silky, smooth serum that floods the skin with hydration while marine extracts provide a subtle firming effect. It doesn’t overpromise, but performs well at delivering a softer, more supple neck and décolleté. If your main concern is dryness, crepiness or general dullness, this is the one to massage in every evening.
Pros
- Deeply hydrating
Cons
- Fragrance can be strong for fragrance-sensitive users
3. Alpha-H Retinol Reboot Exfoliating Body Treatment
Key ingredients: Retinol, glycolic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid, antioxidant botanicals.
Alpha-H does active ingredients like no one else, and this hardworking treatment really proves it. Retinol, glycolic acid and lactic acid join forces to smooth, brighten and visibly resurface the skin—perfect for addressing sun damage, uneven tone and rough texture on the neck (although it can actually be used anywhere below the face). It’s strong but smartly formulated, meaning results come quickly, as long as you build up slowly.
Pros
- Customer reviews note improved texture and reduced crepiness
Cons
- May cause mild active ingredient-related irritation
4. Niod Elasticity Catalyst Neck Serum
Key ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, peptides (trifluoroacetyl tripeptide‑2, palmitoyl hexapeptide‑12, acetyl tetrapeptide), l-carnitine, caffeine.
In true Niod fashion, this is an incredibly potent formula for people who want clinical-grade results at home. A blend of advanced peptides targets loss of elasticity, helping the skin feel noticeably more supported and stronger over time.
Pros
- Reviewers note improved firmness and smoother, more hydrated skin
Cons
- Texture is slightly tacky before absorbing
5. Cellcosmet Cellbust-Xt Cellular Gel-Cream
Key ingredients: Cytopep cellular extracts, hyaluronic acid , baobab fruit pulp extract, chlorella algae extract, peptide complex.
Pure indulgence, but indulgence with a purpose. This decadent formula feels like a rich, comforting cocoon for the neck and chest, and it's packed with cellular extracts and hyaluronic complexes that instantly replenish dryness. Yes, it has a luxury price tag, but it certainly delivers luxury results.
Pros
- Extremely nourishing, rich texture
- Luxurious fragrance
Cons
- Expensive price point
6. Révive Fermitif Neck Renewal Serum
Key ingredients: Bio‑firming peptides, bio‑renewal peptides, COQ10, niacinamide, liqourice root extract, oat kernel extract.
Peptide complexes and the brand’s signature Bio-Renewal Technology work together to firm, smooth, and subtly lift the contours of the neck. The texture is elegant and cushiony, leaning more toward a cream-serum hybrid. It’s not cheap, but if you want tightening you can feel (and see) within a few weeks, look no further.
Pros
- Immediate smoothing sensation noted by reviewers
Cons
- Expensive price point
- Fragrance is very strong
7. Is Clinical Neck Perfect
Key ingredients: Salicylic acid, willow bark extract, licorice root extract, hyaluronic acid.
This blend of exfoliating botanicals, brightening liquorice, and deeply hydrating hyaluronic acid result in a formula that noticeably smooths crepiness and softens lines. It’s gentle but incredibly effective, especially for anyone dealing with UV-induced wrinkling. The finish is silky, refined and completely non-greasy.
Pros
- Clinical testing feedback positive for texture and hydration
Cons
- Expensive price point
8. Perricone MD Cold Plasma Plus+ Sub-D/Neck
Key ingredients: Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, niacinamide, alpha lipoic acid, peptides, glycerin.
This is the definition of an all-rounder—firming, brightening, refining, hydrating in one go. You'll notice an immediate tightening feel and hydration boost, while niacinamide and vitamin C work on tone and long-term clarity. A smart, streamlined solution for overall neck rejuvenation.
Pros
- Absorbs quickly
Cons
- Small size doesn't last very long
9. Trinny London the Elevator Neck and Decollete Concentrate
Key ingredients: Peptides (decapeptide‑22, zinc palmitoyl nonapeptide‑14, oligopeptide‑78), alpha arbutin, sea buckthorn oil.
The Elevator is Trinny London’s targeted answer to signs of neck ageing—a blend of peptides help to fortify the skin’s structure, while alpha arbutin gently brightens uneven tone. It feels silky and is fast-absorbing, the kind of formula you actually look forward to applying. With consistent use, expect a smoother, more lifted-looking neckline with improved luminosity.
Pros
- Silky texture and pleasant scent
Cons
- May take time to see visible results
10. Sisley-Paris Neck Cream
Key ingredients: Oat seed extract, rhatany extract, lady’s mantle extract, soy fibre extract, caffeine, red algae extract, horse chestnut extract, shea butter, sunflower oil, vitamin E , glycerin, panthenol.
Ask any beauty editor and they will tell you that this is the Rolls-Royce of neck creams. Everything from the texture to the performance feels elevated: oat seed extract delivers a tightening effect, while botanical complexes help refine and tone over time. Granted, it's a splurge, but it gives that 'instant result' payoff that only advanced formulas manage.
Pros
- Reviewers note immediate lifting and firming
- High concentration of actives
Cons
- Expensive price point
11. The Ordinary Niacinamide 5% Face and Body Emulsion
Key ingredients: Niacinamide, glycerin, propanediol, sphingomonas ferment extract, tocopherol.
A brilliantly simple formula that proves neck care doesn’t always need to be expensive. This lightweight emulsion blends niacinamide with humectants to brighten tone, even texture and keep the skin comfortably hydrated. It won’t replace a firming peptide treatment, but for everyday maintenance or as a starter neck product, it’s unbeatable value. The big bottle means you won’t hesitate to use it generously, which is half the battle.
Pros
- Affordable price point
- Can be used across face and body
Cons
- Some users find it too light for very dry skin unless followed by a richer cream
How We Tested
To build this list, I approached neck creams the same way I do any niche-but-hotly-debated category: by treating them like real routines, not isolated products. Over several weeks, I rotated each formula into my morning and evening skincare routines. Because the neck can react differently to strong actives, I paid attention to how quickly each product absorbed, whether it pilled under SPF, how it layered with retinoids, and if it encouraged (or irritated) my sensitive skin. Alongside hands-on testing, I also combed through verified customer reviews and expert commentary to identify which products consistently delivered on firmness, brightness, smoothing or hydration, and which formulas are the most impressive.
