I'm Breaking Up With My Foundation for This More Natural-Looking One-Step Alternative
Yes, "foundcealer" is basically my shortcut to a fresh, glowing complexion every single morning.

I sometimes feel like working as a beauty editor is like slipping on an alter ego post-school run. Because while products are my kryptonite—I truly can’t resist the allure of a luxurious new moisturiser or sheeny lip gloss—I actually interact with very few of them in my normal daily routine. Yes, when I’m at my laptop, writing and researching trends and testing for beauty awards, my desk is littered with the best perfumes, hi-tech serums and innovative skincare tools. But outside of working hours, my beauty routine has to fight for survival between packing school bags, tidying a seemingly endless deluge of toys and answering questions about how the world started at 6 am. (Answers on a postcard, please.)
The truth is, with two young children, the luxury of sitting down to apply a full face of makeup, uninterrupted, is long gone. And I know I’m not alone in that. Almost everyone I know in every walk of life has been embracing a more simplistic approach to beauty in recent years. Yet here’s the truth of it for me: while an easier easier makeup routine has been inspired by necessity, I can’t say that I ever feel truly polished when I step out the door with natural skin. You see, as someone who deals consistently with acne breakouts, when my skin is really acting up, I crave the finish that a full foundation once gave me. But there is a solution. Introducing the “foundcealer”.
What Is a Foundcealer?
“Whether you are strapped for time or just want to simplify your routine, finding a concealer that doubles as a base can be a game changer,” explains celebrity makeup artist Tania Grier. Simply put, a foundcealer is effectively a multitasking concealer that can be used for selected coverage exactly where you need it, rather than covering every inch of your face with foundation. For me, that’s on blemishes and dark circles, while for you, it might be areas of redness or hyperpigmentation.
By leaving some areas of your skin bare, you’ll benefit from creating the appearance of fresh, bright and even skin, but with the added bonus of having blurred over any areas that you might prefer to fade into the background a little. And even better, it’s still incredibly fast to apply and actually cuts down the contents of your makeup bag by meaning you can ditch your foundation entirely.
How We Chose
I personally put all of the foundcealers on this list to the test, judging them on their coverage (in my case, concealing a pretty hefty stress-related breakout and dark circles from a run of broken sleep), how comfortable they are on the skin, their versatility on different areas of the face and their range of skin tones. I also asked makeup artist Tania Grier for her expert pick and reached out to my network of beauty editor friends for their recommendations, too.

- Best Multitasker: L'Oréal Paris Skin Ink Foundcealer (£15)
- Best for Brightening: Rimmel Multi-Tasker Wake Me Up Concealer & Foundation (£13)
- Best for Customisable Coverage: TirTir Glide & Hide Blurring Concealer (£13)
1. Merit The Minimalist
If speed is of the essence for you when it comes to your makeup routine, then Merit Beauty is undoubtedly where it's at, and their complexion stick has become something of an emergency handbag product. A foundcealer from its very inception, this clever stick was specifically created to throw out the notion of traditional foundation and instead was designed to apply just where you need it on your face.
For me, this works just as well on blemishes as it does under-eyes—just dab it on and blend it out with your fingertips. (Although I have to admit I do have a soft spot for the Merit Blending Brush too.) The finish is natural, so it won't entirely mask angry spots, but it brings redness down and softens discolouration in the skin to leave me feeling instantly more polished.
Pros
- Easy to apply precisely to skin
- Buildable
- Natural finish
Cons
- Drier skin will need to prep with a rich moisturiser or oil first
2. Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer
When I look particularly tired in the morning and am in need of a reliable all-rounder, then this concealer from Nars ticks all of the boxes. (No surprise, then, that it's actually the #1 concealer in the UK.) Infused with a multi-active botanical blend, it has a delightfully rich texture that glides on to skin to cover everything from redness to dark circles with ease. And impressively, it boasts a medium to full coverage without ever looking cakey. I would happily apply this all over my face to get a full dose of its naturally glowy finish.
Pros
- Medium to full coverage
- Extensive shade range
- Fresh, radiant finish
Cons
- Can get a little cakey on active breakouts
3. Erborian Super BB Concealer
Despite calling itself a 'BB Concealer', this stuff boasts an impressive amount of coverage, without looking at all obvious on the skin. It has a lovely serum-like texture, infused with brightening niacinamide and ginseng, and actually feels like you are applying skincare, which drier skin types will love. In terms of multitasking, the creaminess of it means that it's really good at smoothing over uneven texture and toning down stubborn blemishes without looking like you're wearing a mask of makeup. Instead, you're left with naturally brighter, more even skin.
Pros
- Lighweight texture
- Smoothing finish
- Infused with skincare ingredients
Cons
- Limited shade range
4. Dior Backstage Face & Body Flash Perfector Concealer
If you need a foundcealer that is going to last through a busy day without any touch-ups required, then this one from Dior is the one. The coverage is strong enough to really disguise blemishes and redness, and the brush-tip applicator makes it easy to dot it directly onto spots for precision application. It also plays nice on under-eyes, drier patches (like around my nose in the colder weather), and once it's blended in, it doesn't budge—even on my oily skin. Plus, the chic packaging means it feels like a delight to use, too.
Pros
- Incredibly long-wearing
- Precise brush applicator
- Natural matte finish
Cons
- Might be too pigmented if you're used to a natural finish
5. L'Oréal Paris Skin Ink Foundcealer
This one really surprised me as it's an affordable high-street option, yet the creamy texture performs like something far more expensive. I’ve used it both to spot-conceal breakouts and blended out across the cheeks as a base, and in both cases, it sat comfortably without drawing attention to blemishes. The satin finish gives just enough polish while still feeling lightweight. For me, it’s the perfect “school-run-to-meeting” concealer as it's quick, always reliable, and pleasingly priced.
Pros
- Affordable
- Versatile for all-over use
- Buildable coverage
Cons
- Might cling a little on drier skin
6. Kulfi Main Match Concealer
Finding the perfect undertone can be tricky, particularly for deeper skin tones, but South Asian beauty brand Kulfi absolutely nails it. I'm pretty pale, but I often find that fair-toned foundations and concealers skew on the pink side. However, Paan Party is the perfect foundcealer for me as it has that yellow undertone that allows me to use it to counteract dark circles and diminish red pimples. The coverage is a solid medium, which means it definitely covers, but it isn't so heavy that it will cake or crack throughout the day.
Pros
- Thoughtful, inclusive shade range
- Versatile finish
- Non-cakey
Cons
- Not for you if you like a really dewy skin look
7. Rimmel Multi-Tasker Wake Me Up Concealer & Foundation
If dark circles are your nemesis, then this concealer and foundation hybrid will undoubtedly appeal. First up, the cooling wand applicator is a revelation—it means that tired eyes will instantly enjoy some de-puffing action before we've even got to the camouflaging. As for the formula, it's creamy and blendable—much like a skin tint—yet has enough coverage to counteract the purple tones of dark circles and calm redness. Once blended in (I think the warmth of fingertips works best), your skin will be left looking fresh, luminous and undoubtedly more even. A great, affordable foundcealer.
Pros
- Brightens dark circles
- Cooling and de-puffing applicator
- Dewy finish
Cons
- It's quite sheer, but does layer well
8. Suqqu Creamy Cover Concealer
"The new SUQQU Creamy Cover Concealer is perfect as a foundcealer because it’s full coverage but with added radiance," says Grier. "No matter how much you keep building, it never looks dry and it doesn’t crease. The unique gel formula makes it easy to blend, and the ingredients (including hydrolyzed collagen) keep the skin fresh and hydrated, so your skin still glows. Plus, the pointed applicator adapts well to the curves of the face and holds a good amount of product, so you don’t have to keep dipping. I also love the fact that I don’t need to powder on top due to the semi-matte finish."
Pros
- Great for dry or mature skin
- Soft-focus, blurred effect
- Creamy and hydrating texture
Cons
- A pricier option
9. TirTir Glide & Hide Blurring Concealer
Effectively two products in one, this dual-ended K-beauty foundcealer has a high coverage balm stick concealer at one end and a silky liquid cream concealer at the other. This means that you have the option to mix and match both coverage and finish exactly where you need it. For me, that means using the stick end for breakouts and redness, and the liquid end for under-eyes and for a dewy skin finish. It makes a great option for an everyday makeup look without having to reach for various concealers and foundations to achieve the same finish.
Pros
- Two concealers in one
- Affordable
- Natural satin finish
Cons
- Imagine the liquid end may run out quickly
How To Use a Foundcealer
As someone who has very little skill in the makeup application department, I was slightly concerned that a foundcealer may require too much precision for me. However, they are delightfully easy to use. “In most cases, you’ll want to just apply a little to the under eye area, plus a dot on the cheeks, chin and forehead,” explains Grier. “You can then spread it out quickly using your fingers or a soft concealer brush.” If you do have areas like spots or rosacea then Grier suggests taking a moment to “spot check” the skin. “Just apply a small amount to blemishes, redness or pigmentation to create the same effect as a foundation would, but with a quicker turnaround as you’re using less product.”
What to Look for In a Foundcealer
The most important thing when choosing a foundcealer is getting the right shade, as you’ll need a tone that works on various areas of the skin and many of us naturally have fluctuations in tone and colour on our face. “Test the colour by applying it to the under eyes to see how it fares on dark circles before blending it out into the cheeks,” advises Grier. “It should complement the skin like a sheer foundation would.”
Next, it’s the texture to consider. “It needs to blend well and not feel dry,” says Grier. It’s also important to note that if you are used to wearing a more classic medium to full base then you will want to seek out a foundcealer with a little more pigment to make sure that you get that coverage. “Especially if you have rosacea, acne or sun damage, you’ll want something that genuinely conceals,” explains Grier.
