The Editor-Approved "Risky" Skirt Trend That Is Replacing Jeans This Winter

As you wrap up in as many layers as possible and eagerly sip a piping-hot festive drink, the phrase "sheer clothing" will likely send shivers down your spine. Yes, it's the season of wool and cashmere. But hear me out, because this particular trend deserves your attention no matter how low the temperature. Sheer skirts have been trending since early 2023, but we've seen them reach new heights in the lead-up to party season. So much so that, dare I say it, the trend has even replaced jeans as the festive-season staple. These peek-a-boo skirt styles lend themselves to elevated everyday looks—worn with sneakers and a longline knit, for example—and daring nighttime ensembles that leave lacy underpinnings on display. Whilst many fashion insiders seem to revel in the revealing novelty of this trend, there are plenty of more modest styling options for those who prefer to be covered up (not least for thermic reasons).

And as winter is synonymous with layering, this is exactly the kind of fresh trend we're craving to keep our outfits interesting. Amongst the countless sheer-skirt looks we've seen recently, our favourites have layered the daring piece over red tights (a microtrend in their own right), miniskirts and yes, even jeans. And there's always the option to pick a subtly sheer iteration or one featuring a see-through panel that hints at the look without fully committing. My top tip? Choose cosy layers like cardigans, blazers and wool jumpers up top to help balance out the bottom half.

The juxtaposition between the oversized, "masculine" blazer and the sexy sheer skirt is masterful.

Prada's sheer-panel skirts were spotted all over Milan Fashion Week earlier this year.

Business up top, party down below. Sticking to neutrals is an easy way to make this trend feel wearable.

Similarly, a white tee will quickly dress down even the most skin-revealing skirt.

I love the use of pastels to give this look a springtime feel. Save this one for March 2024.

It's still winter so a long coat is essential, and it will also offer some protection from the elements when stepping out in a sheer skirt.
