Dakota Johnson's Elevated Wardrobe Consists of These 8 Easy-to-Copy Pieces
I'm going to put it out there–if there is ever a discussion about the celebrity wardrobes actually worth copying, Dakota Johnson needs to be on the list. You'll find her always immaculately presented (and rarely ever in leggings, hoodies or baggy tracksuits), meaning that even her most casual day looks feel "put together". And, even in a world of the Sienna Millers, Alexa Chungs and Kate Mosses, the 50 Shades of Grey actress manages to set a whole new standard for celebrity street style, and a look back through her outfit history shows a track record of well-curated, sophisticated looks that are surprisingly easy to replicate.
Dakota's undeniably chic style has been on our radar for a while now, and not least because of her ability to spin a simple outfit combo into something worth photographing, but thanks to her, we've swapped skinnies for flared jeans, invested in loafers, and gotten tips on how to style a plain white tee—not bad for an unlikely street style hero.
And while we wait with bated breath to see what look she does next (and the incoming Madame Web movie is sure to be an unforgettable red carpet moment), now is as good a time as any to take tips from Dakota's wardrobe in a bid to refresh our own for the season ahead. Looking back at some of her best outfits past and present has highlighted some of the key pieces that she wears on repeat, and I'm happy to say that they're all easily shoppable now. So if your wardrobe could do with a Hollywood makeover, keep scrolling for the eight pieces you'll need to master Dakota Johnson's effortlessly, elegant style.
1. THE OVERSIZED BLAZER
Style Notes: At Who What Wear we know the power of a good blazer, and Dakota has mastered the art of styling oversized tailoring for day and night (but more on that later). You're likely to spot her pairing a boxy blazer with casual t-shirts and tanks, and this off-duty look proves just how easy it is to dress up a white tee and black trousers with the right jacket.

2.THE MINI SKIRT
Style Notes: As promised, the blazer returns, but this time it comes with the playful accompaniment of a mini skirt. 2022 might have been the year of the micro mini hemline, but Dakota's skirt of choice is a far more wearable mid-thigh, all the dressier in evening-ready satin. Replicate the look by adding a tonal blazer, or switch it up with turtlenecks, blouses or even simple tees.
This would look just as good with a tank top and sandals as it would with a jumper and knee-high boots.
3. THE WIDE-LEG TROUSER
Style Notes: Ah, the wide-leg trouser. One of the most universally flattering pieces in anyone's wardrobe. Just when we thought cigarette trousers were the look du jour, Dakota stepped out in a supersized wide-leg that reminded us just how chic voluminous tailoring can be. Especially when paired with a knitted bra-digan set (thank you, Katie Holmes).
Just when I thought Abercrombie specialised in incredible dresses...
I'm surprised Dakota doesn't already own these.
4. THE OFF-DUTY TRAINERS
Style Notes: As the queen of casual yet polished. style, it should come as no surprise that Johnson is a fan of a sleek trainers. Especially when paired with denim and a blazer.
Everyone who's anyone is stocking up on New Balance right now.
A luxe, designer spin on the classic white sneaker.
5. THE GUCCI IT BAG
Style Notes: It stands to reason that the face of the Gucci Jackie would have an impressive collection of Gucci bags, and if you look back through Dakota's best looks of the last year or so, it's likely you'll spot a Gucci bag in every one. The latest Jackie iteration is already a cult favourite, but we also love the brands crossbody and tote styles for an investment sure to elevate any outfit.
Sure, the black is chic, but this minty, pistachio green feels so spring.
Need a roomy tote big enough to hold all of your essentials? You got it.
6. THE TAILORED SUIT
Style Notes: Dakota's affinity for suits runs so deep that this entire list could have been built on them alone. and whether she wears them with a shirt and tie or a tank top, we're taking notes on how to make suiting feel "cool" again–starting with flared trousers and a high heel.
The nipped waist and belt are just so good.
7. THE COURT SHOE
Style Notes: And speaking of her heel of choice, it is not the trending Mary Jane, or 2022's skyscaper platform. Nor is it the kitten-heeled slingback or the mid-heel sandal, as it turns out, DJ is most comfortable in the formally "dated" court shoe favoured by Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle. Sorry stiletto sandals, we aren't ready to stock up on blister plasters quite yet, not when the simple court shoe looks this good.
I love the unexpected sheer finish.
You can't discuss the best court shoes without mentioning Christian Louboutin.
8. THE PLAIN WHITE TEE
Style Notes: The quest for the perfect white tee is so challenging that it was the Olsen twin's inspiration behind creating The Row, and with looks like this, it's easy to see why. Dakota might be wearing Gucci trousers and loafers, but the bright white tee manages to be the star of the show (and you'll find her wearing one with jeans, and cropped and tailored trousers time and time again). If you don't already own one (and frankly, I'd be surprised), consider this your sign to invest. It'll be the hardest working thing in your wardrobe.
