Right On Time for Party Season, 6 Hair Accessories That Will Complete Any Festive Outfit
We're finally in December, which means party season is officially in full swing, with Christmas lights being switched on all over the country and festive invitations flying through the door. Luckily, from party shoes that both look good and are genuinely comfortable to party dresses that that you won't see anyone else in this season, we've started the festive wardrobe prep early to take the hassle out of this busy time of year.
From a beauty point of view, we're shared inspo for everything from your manicure to your eyeshadow looks— but what about hair? For me, it's always deciding how to style my hair that causes me the most stress around party dressing. Mainly because I'm a total hair styling novice, but also because I don't want to spend hours teasing and pinning my strands into a style that doesn't stay in place or last through the night.
Luckily, there's one thing that can make you look like you've put in major effort with very little skill required: hair accessories. "If your style is pared back or you don't have a lot of time, a hair accessory is a quick fix to feeling fab and put together," says Natasha Fernandes Anjo, accessory designer and founder of ROOP. "An accessory can be where you start with an outfit, or it can be the final flourish," she adds. "When it comes to party wear, I can be a pretty lazy dresser but a big bow makes me feel like I've got it all figured out."
This is exactly why a hair accessory is always on my partywear shopping list—they never fail to add interest to a basic hairstyle, and (best of all) don't require loads of styling time or expertise.
If you're in the market for a new party hair accessory for winter 2024, scroll down to discover our faves.
1. Clip-On Bows
Tying actual ribbons into your hair is almost always harder than it looks—take it from someone who's tried, many a time. The solution? Clip-on bows, which come pre-tied. So quick and easy that you can literally clip them in while you're en route to your destination.
Shop the look:
This larger option can be used to accessories a half-up-half-down style or clipped into the bobble of a ponytail.
Even larger, this textured version from & Other Stories is sure to make a statement.
2. Oversized Scrunchies
The oversized scrunchie trend is going nowhere this party season. "Scrunchies having their moment has definitely led the way for more innovation in the hair accessory space," says Fernandes Anjo. "They give people so many more options for styling." Whether you pair with a high ponytail or a low bun, this is another effortless style to opt for, and a great opportunity to add a pop of colour to a neutral look.
Shop the look:
ROOP offers a popular 'design your own scrunchie' service—but if you're pressed for time, this gold plissé scrunchie literally screams party season.
Wearing an all-black outfit? This black velvet scrunchie will look so chic.
And if you want to add a pop of colour to an all-black outfit, why not try this red satin option.
3. Bejewelled Hair Slides
A party season classic that works no matter what your hair length or type. And truly, what could be more festive than a subtle sparkle? Lean into the season's trend for rich, jewel-toned shades of ruby red and emerald green, or match your clips to your manicure to tie a look together.
Shop the look:
This failsafe combo of black and gold will complement any outfit choice.
This combination of gold, emeralds, and pearls, will elevate even the most low-key of outfit choices.
I love the organic shapes and eclectic colour pairings of these gemstone hair slides from Oliver Bonas.
4. Burgundy Headband
At this point there really is no arguing the fact that burgndy definitely is the colour of the season. We're seeing it everywhere from lipsticks and nail polishes to shoes and handbags. So yes, it only makes sense that it makes the perfect colour choice for a party hair accessory. Whether you opt for an Alice band or a stretch headband, both are effortless ways to elevate your everyday hairstyle—pair with statement earrings for an extra festive flair.
Shop the look:
It might look basic, but trust me on this one. A simple stretch headband can look incredibly chic when won with a sleek straight style or a super slick bun.
This leather headband brings a slightly more edgy, cool-girl vibe to a classic Alice band look.
Not burgundy, but perhaps even more festive? I love this tartan option from ROOP.
5. Mini Ribbons
Larger bows may be more statement-making, but if you prefer a more subtle nod to the enduring bow trend, opt for miniature ribbons instead.
It may look like these ribbons were tied effortlessly into your hair, but they're actually set onto a clip, which makes them perfect for a pinned back style.
6. Textured Hair Clips
Floaty, fluffy, textured fabrics like organza, chiffon, and tulle are big on trend for winter 2024 and spring 2025, so it only makes sense to experiment via your party hair accessory choices. While ribbons and bows in textured fabrics are a popular option, I've spotted textured hair clips all over my Instagram and Pinterest feeds.
This rosette flower clip can be used to accessorise both updos and loose styles, and I've seen so many fashion people style them as brooches or chokers, too.
An elevated alternative to a plastic claw clip. Ideal for party season.
This pearl and mesh combination will add instant glamour to your party outfit.
